The New York Times reported today that much of the information that led to the heightened alert in New York and Washington D.C. is actually three or four years old and that authorities have no evidence or recent communications indicating an upcoming terrorist attack. George Pataki and Michael Bloomberg, who are both speaking at the upcoming Republican convention, are making political hay off of people's fears of another 9/11. Some New Yorkers are worrie d about the enormous cost of the alert to the local economy, as bridge traffic snarls to a crawl.

Boing Boing pal Douglas Rushkoff's neuron-annihilating comic Club Zero-G, first serialized in BPM magazine, has finally been compiled and expanded into a full-length graphic novel. Published by the demented souls at Disinformation, the book features art by Canadian cartoonist Steph Dumais.

"The story follows Zeke, a gangly, unpopular, 19-year-old college student - a townie who also happens to attend the elite college in his community - who has discovered a terrific new club where he is accepted and popular. There's only one catch: everyone at the club is dreaming. It only exists in the shared dream consciousness of its participants. If at all.

For there's the rub: Zeke's friends think he is simply going crazy. His girlfriend in the club won't even acknowledge his existence in real life.

As Zeke descends further into the Club Zero-G reality, he learns that this shared dream space is actually a psychic field created by four mutant children from the future - the last of their kind, conceived by human space travelers in zero gravity and exhibiting strange deformities and abilities. Living in a future where independent thinking is considered a threat to "consensus," they are hunted by the authorities, and seek the help of teens from the 21st century who, they hope, can still alter the course of reality.

Today there's a new header graphic. It was taken out the front window of a moving car on Interstate 25 just past Santa Fe, in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, in late afternoon during monsoon season. You can see the day's thunderstorm forming behind the hills.

The previous graphic was a picture of my grandfather, Rudy Kiesler, taken (probably) in the 1950s, in a small Georgia town where he had a schmatte< /a> factory. He's the good looking guy on the left. About the other guys, one is a pilot of an Eastern airlines plane, the other goyisha is a local cop, and we think the other Jew is one of my grandfather's associates. My grandfather died in 1995. Ea stern Airlines went out of business in 1991.

Georg Boomgaarden, German Ambassador to Spain, also participated in the festive award ceremony.

The displays use metallic films featuring various shape memory alloys which are produced layer by layer on silicon wafers using thin film technology. Display pixels are generated when the metallic film adjusts its curvature partially, similarly to bimetal snap plates for temperature switches. The movement of the films is then transferred to the touch panel via plastic pins und thus can be detected by the user.

It looks like I got a birthday gift and didn't even know it. A fellow going by "sticktron" posted a nifty infographic detailing my previous Do-It-Yourself Smart Radio Station post. It's certainly a bit easier to understand when you look at it this way. Note that the playlist detailed in the screenshot is unworkable due to them all being in one window, but the criteria are valid when used as detailed on the right.

This approach is based on the idea of a master playlist, which feeds off of several pools of potential songs. Each pool is created by a dynamic playlist–called Smart Playlists in iTunes/iPod–and updates itself constantly.

As your songs get listened to, rated, weeded out, given priority, etc., you will be continually upgrading the mix. It is TRULY your own personal Radio Station experience.
