Hey, Your Library's Books Are in My
Google. No, Your Google Is in My Library
Books.
12/19/2004 03:36 PM

So the big< /a> news is about Google and libraries. I don't feel the need to comment on this right now, as you can find plenty of other places for that. However, here are a few angles I haven't seen discussed elsewhere in the library blogosphere.

  • Librari es and the Internet

"More broadly, the Internet can profoundly improve the relationship between libraries and society. For example, there are two major libraries in my town -- a college library, and a public library. My library card works in both places. I used to favor the college library, because there was open WiFi access there -- which meant, among other things, that I could use LibraryLookup from my laptop to find books in the stacks. Recently, though, the college shut down its open access point. And from an IT administrator's point of view, I can understand why. Not long after, the public library installed an open access point. So now it's my favorite spot, and lately I notice other mobile professionals congregating there too." [Jon Udell's Weblog
(Click over to read Jon's story about getting locked in the library, too!)

  • "A quick calculation using the figures above suggests an average scan rate of 3200 volumes per day (assuming 365 days/year for 6 years) at the University of Michigan site alone." [Tito Sierra on the WEB4 LIB mailing list]

  • "An even quicker calculation shows that they will need to digitize 2.25 books _a_minute_, 24 hours/day, 365 days/year to digitize 7 million volumes in six years." [Roy Tennant on the WEB4 LIB mailing list]

It's times like this when I wish Karen Coyle had< /a> a blog.

Rare Exports, Inc.

Finland exports more than just Nokia phones and this short film details the production of the most rare of Finnish exports. The large version [66mb] is worth the download if you have a highspeed connection. Yanks with a hang-up about naked male bums should likely refrain from watching this film. It's utterly delightful and narrated in English. [from PIE.]

A rare individual

A rare individual 02/11/2004 05:51 AM
You'll recall, I hope, that in the last issue I almost despaired of finding an answer to the problem of implementing identity projects over the irrational fears of non-technical, even technophobic, people. Most of the replies I'd gotten to the problem stressed the ability of the technology to protect data ownership as well as data security and privacy. We're all aware of that, but we still need to convince people in the enterprise that there is benefit to giving up control of the flow of data.

First up, a couple of posts on SunRays, from Jeff Dillon and John Clingan. They are indeed pretty neat, although when, earlier this week, I was at SunLabs in Massachusets, it took the little grey guy a couple of minutes to find my Sun desktop which lives in Santa Clara and render it the first time; but then it was fine and snappy. Danese Cooper has a straight forward explanation of why CEOs probably aren’t going to be blogging any time soon. On another note entirely, Jim Waldo writes about the impedence mismatch between how engineers view the world and how the world views engineers. And just to get out of geek mode, Richard Elling has notes on the word “war” and nice pictures of rare goats that he rescued.

The Naxi people of China's Yunnan Province use the only living pictographic language (similar to ancient Egyptian or Mayan writing) in the world today, and the Library of Congress's collection of Naxi manuscripts is considered the finest in the world. One hundred eighty-five documents plus a 392-foot funerary scroll from that collection are now available online in "Selections from the Naxi Manuscript Collection," which can be found under the link "Individual Digital Collections" at http://international.loc.gov/. The Naxi Kingdom flourished from the eighth century until 1724, when it came under Chinese rule. Naxi priests created the manuscripts on coarse, handmade paper, bound them into booklets, and used them while conducting religious rituals and shamanistic ceremonies. The edges of the manuscripts were burned during the ceremonies so that the resulting smoke would transmit the book's message up to the heavens. Because the sacred books were then either buried with the priests when they died or were burned on their funeral pyre, relatively few Naxi manuscripts are known to be in existence. The Library of Congress's collection of 3,342 Naxi items is the largest outside of China and this is the first time that such a large number of Naxi manuscripts have been cataloged, selectively digitized and put on the Web.
