The multilingual internet: new studies

The multilingual internet: new studies 12/02/2003 03:08 AM

The new issue of the Journal for Computer-Mediated Communication explores emergent language practices in email, text messaging , newsgroups , and instant messenger ( IM ).

The multilingual Internet raises a number of practical and scholarly questions, ranging from the distinctive features of email or chat in languages with specific font-related requirements, to code-switching in bilingual or multilingual online communication, to the effects of the English language and global "netspeak" (Crystal, 2001) on [computer-mediated communication] in local languages. Linguistic research has shown that spoken languages vary in their structures, meanings and usage—is this equally true on the Internet, where speakers of different languages come into contact and influence one another on a scale never before imagined?

Topics include Arabic and Greek scripts transformed into ASCII text by instant messenger, the spread of English , and gender empowerment in chat .

And The Internet

More Misleading Studies About Children
And The Internet
09/07/2004 04:07 PM
A group in the UK called NCH can't seem to put out a reasonable, unbiased study to save their lives. This is the charity group that is spending so much time worrying about children that they can't be bothered with coming up with unbiased studies. Everything leans so far in one direction, it's almost silly. First they blamed the internet for child porn as if it wouldn't exist otherwise, followed by a survey using leading questions to make it look as though parents were afraid 3G wireless was dangerous to their kids. To top that they put out a fear-mongering report about 11 year olds gambling online, when all they had done was coax a single 16-year-old to sign up for an online gambling site. Their latest is along the same lines. They start with the assumption that "the internet is bad for children" and then absolutely freak out when many parents don't seem to agree with them. Rather than think that, perhaps, many parents actually understand and appreciate the risks of the internet -- knowing that a properly monitored and trained kid can handle the internet -- NCH immediately says parents need to be educated. In fact, the study shows that many who aren't worried say so because they believe their child has been adequately taught about the risks. Whether or not that's true is an open question. However, this NCH study doesn't go down that road, preferring to simply freak out that some parents might dare to trust their kids on the internet.

Internet to see major strike today?

Internet to see major strike today? 08/27/2004 01:56 PM
Yevgeny Kaspersky, of Kaspersky Labs fame, has raised concerns of a major attack on the internet today. Kaspersky has been widely quoted as saying that there would be a major online attack against Israeli sites today. "Arabic and Hebrew language websites contained an announcement of an 'electronic jihad' against Israel, to start on 26th August 2004".

True? Quite possibly. However, after this news was widely circulated around the web, Kaspersky went on to clarify his comments. He remarked that the true possibility of the threat was 'low', but added that Kaspersky Labs would be raising their online thread level.

He also commented (and raised a very valid point) that if not today, it could be tomorrow that we see an attack. He noted that the many insecurities in the internet’s structure and popular Operating systems meant that it was only a matter of time before online terrorists added 'the internet' to their arsenal of weapons.

Although such a major attack has yet to take place on the internet, a few have come close. Of note, an attack on Akamai, WWW content distributor/cache, did serious damage due to the number of sites hosted with them. Equally damaging was an attack in October 2002 on the Root servers of the internet, that manage DNS. For more information on this kind of attack, read here for an extensive interview with Dave Dittrich.

Companies Turn to Internet Consultants
Rather than Full-time Staff Employees
for Internet Strategy and Management
Solutions
07/25/2004 02:48 AM
Small and large companies are turning to consultants to save expense over the cost of hiring a full-time staff. Businesses face tough competition and challenges with a lack of capitalization, inadequate staff with insufficient expertise, inexperienced and overworked staff who are unable to properly plan strategies and direction for on-line presence. New business start-ups often have budgets that do not include salary and benefits for a full-time experienced team. [PRWEB Jul 25, 2004]
