Microsoft has committed vast resources to its .NET initiative. Although still in its infancy stage, it is clear that the technology is going to grow by multitudes. We are blessed in the moderator department with not only a reworld .net related programmer, but a .net course instructor as well.

One of them coupled with Terence Welsh's Helios screensaver and you'll spend a lot more time just staring at your Mac.

This is odd. Search Engine Lowdown is reporting on a posting at ResourceShelf that briefly describes Yahoo Search's "refinements" or "suggestions." The odd thing is that this isn't new at all. I know because I worked on the original version about a year ago (and then Google copied it). At the time we called it "related search" and probably still do. That project was a lot of fun, too. :-) See Also: Debugging, step #1 Y! Search Easter Egg Google...

Navigate the .NET Framework and Your
Projects with "My"
04/22/2004 01:20 AM
One of the biggest issues that programmers run into is the sheer breadth of .NET, which means that finding the best class for a particular task can be quite daunting. I have read many newsgroup postings from developers working very hard to call a Win32® API function from their Visual Basic .NET or C# code, when that exact function already exists in .NET. Why are they trying to call the API? They didn't find, notice, or perhaps understand how they could use existing parts of the Framework. My provides an intuitive navigation hierarchy that exposes existing .NET functionality through easily understood root objects, targeting the practical tasks and concepts that you grapple with on a regular basis.

How does a stupid white man navigate

How does a stupid white man navigate
around northern Japan?
07/27/2004 11:27 PM
I'm planning on renting a car in Tokyo around August 5 and heading north to Hokkaido and tourist sights along the way.  My only previous trips to Japan have been via public transit and/or getting rides from locals.  Is there any hope of navigating around rural Japan if one (a) does not speak Japanese, and (b) cannot read Japanese characters?  I was hoping that perhaps there are GPS units that have all of their user interface in English.  So, for example, I could type in the name of a temple in Nikko and have the GPS guide me there with English voice prompts.  The fact that www.hertz.com won't let you book a car at Narita and www.orbitz.com says "we're sorry; an error has occurred" is worrisome. Is a Japanese road trip not a good idea for a stupid white man?

Calling SOAP Servers from JS in Mozilla

Calling SOAP Servers from JS in Mozilla 06/24/2005 06:58 PM
Interacting with web servers through forms and user actions alone seems so dry and boring. The full-fledged SOAP client built into the Mozilla family of browsers can make your applications more active and useful. Zachary Kessin shows how to write a simple SOAP server in PHP that communicates with Mozilla through JavaScript.

O'Reilly: Calling SOAP Servers from JS

O'Reilly: Calling SOAP Servers from JS
in Mozilla
06/24/2005 03:03 PM
OnLamp.com has a new article posted today that aims to show you how to call SOAP servers from Javascript in Mozilla.

Traditional web pages interact with the server only when generating a page or submitting a form. This is fine in some cases, but in others it causes problems for a webmaster. For example, there is no way to validate a user's input against a database midway through filling out the form, or to populate elements based on the user's input, unless a large amount of data is sent along with the page. In many cases this is a prohibitive amount of data, such a multimegabyte or even gigabyte database.

They give a sample SOAP service in PHP for you to connect to (using PHP5s built-in libraries it seems) and then proceed to jump right over to the Javascript. I'm pretty sure that this functionality won't work outside of Mozilla, but it's still a pretty cool little hack for anyone who uses it. SOAP services (web services, for that matter) are growing more and more each day, and, thankfully, more and more companies are getting on the bandwagon about it and opening up APIs for their information to be accessed simply and easily...
