02/19/2004 07:52 AMThe Contemplate Web Templating System is a set of server-side scripts
released under the Apache license that generate Web pages. Contemplate
generates pages by combining user-defined templates and content. This
marriage of page layout and content is controlled by the URL passed to
the Contemplate scripts. By changing the URL, you can make a page show
entirely different content, and a piece of content can appear on many
different pages.

iTunes phone delay: it's not the
carriers

seen as the result of carriers second-guessing their own involvement
in music sales. In reality, it was Apple that pulled the plug.

New E911 Service May Actually Delay
Phone Calls To 911
06/17/2004 05:16 AMThere's been an ongoing struggle to get the various wireless carriers
to offer E911 functionality, so that police can quickly determine the
location of a caller. However, a glitch in the way Verizon Wireless
set up their E911 system means that
some callers
may experience a series of two second delays when calling 911 as
the phone tries to pinpoint the callers location. As you might
imagine, a two second delay on an emergency call can be quite a lot.
The problem is unlikely to happen in most situations - only in cases
where it's difficult for the GPS to get a read on the location.
However, that probably isn't too comforting to the few people it will
impact. Verizon is working to fix the problem. Sprint is quoted as
saying they fixed this same problem last year, so it's obviously not a
new issue. This seems like the type of issue you would try to solve
as early as possible.
Motorola iTunes Phone Delay Cleared Up
Motorola iTunes Phone Delay Cleared Up
03/19/2005 02:45 AM
Motorola has cleared things up regarding
the ROKR's absence at CeBIT and why they pulled their plans to
announce the iTunes phone at the last second. Apparently, it stems
simply from the differing product launch philosophies of the two
companies. Motorola likes to show its products off before a launch
whereas "Steve's perspective is that you launch a product on Sunday
and sell it on Monday," says Ron Garriques, Motorla's mobile phone
division president. The initial speculation that the troubles stemmed
from the urging of one or more wireless carriers was quickly put to
bed by Ron, saying "I've got lots of carriers fighting to be the first
one we go with." It seems that we're just going to have to wait for
Apple and Motorola to simply surprise us one day, apparently, this summer.

Vodafone Japan is getting two new Toshiba handsets, the
V603T and V603SH, both of which are clamshells. The V603SH has a
motion sensor, allowing users to wave it around to perform basic
commands (not unlike using mouse gestures)—neat, but ultimately
pointless, I fear. At the very least, it's golden, which should be
worth some price premium. Its companion V603T appears to be
essentially the same phone minus the motion sensing—in its case,
Toshiba is focusing on the ability to pick-up analog television
broadcasts (something the V603SH can do, as well).
Both phone will be available in February in a Japan near you.

VodaFone, BT Pairs Bluetooth to Cell
Phone for Handoff
05/20/2004 06:59 PMBritish Telecom will deploy a Vodafone handset that switches from
cellular to a local broadband connection at homes, offices: Project
Bluephone would ostensibly use Bluetooth to handle the cell to
broadband swapover when within the range of a local base station, and
then transmit voice over that connection out to BT. Details are a
little hazy about how well this will work in homes: Bluetooth
typically runs at its 1 Mbps speed only within 30 to 100 feet, even
with the more powerful flavor of Bluetooth. [via Engadget]...

Pocket-Lint brings to our
attention the F500i camera phone, the first Sony Ericsson phone on the
Vodafone UK network. What it does, you see, is take VGA-quality
digital photographs and then, while this might be shocking to those
unprepared, also allows you to make a telephone call over the
airwaves using a tiny, integrated "cellular" radio. Yes, folks, it's a
camera, but also a phone! Oh. You've ... seen ... ah.
Well, it has a tiny 3D chip and games! Did you know that? Ah ha!

What's The ROI Of Your Phone System?
What's The ROI Of Your Phone System?
09/23/2004 11:28 PMNo, this article doesn't ask what the ROI of a phone system is for a
company, but does say that companies
aren't letting
their employees you instant messaging because they don't see the
ROI. This seems like the type of question that will sound just
like "what's the ROI of your phone" in the future. A communications
tool like your phone system or email or instant messaging isn't judged
by its individual ROI. It's a tool that lets people communicate much
more effectively both inside and outside the organization, and giving
them that option to have in their toolbox expands opportunities. The
study in question did find that people who had IM at the office did
tend to be more productive, but it's not clear why you would even
want to bother separating it out. The fear that companies have is
that users will use IM to waste time, but that doesn't seem like a
reason to ban the technology entirely. Sure, some people will waste
time with it, but a company should be able to figure out who's not
doing their job properly and weed them out. Just because some people
might abuse a technology to slack off, doesn't mean it should be
banned from letting all of your
good workers use it. If that
was the case, all companies wouldn't allow computers (oooh,
solitaire!), the web, email, phones, books, notepads, lunch break
rooms or even let employees talk to each other. You give employees
the tools and you let them know what their job is. If they're not
performing, that's the issue you deal with, not whether they've been
goofing off over IM. If they are getting their job done, what's the
problem?
