Because today I finished up the first draft version of the database access RTL for the big work project. Yeah, it's really fragile, and likely to fall over in odd ways when stressed, and the DB schema itself still needs a touch of work (missing UNIQUEs on the primary index) but... it works. I can insert, delete, and read records, as well as going forward and backwards through the DB table in primary key order. I still need to work on partial key matching, and walking forward through a partial key match set, but that's next, and I can probably...

Personal Surfing At Work Is Good

Personal Surfing At Work Is Good 11/05/2003 07:06 PM
Every time another study comes out, commissioned by a web filtering company, saying that (oh no!) people are doing personal surfing at work - I wonder what's wrong with a little personal surfing at work? I certainly do it, and it's useful for me to take a mental breather and keep my batteries charged. I encourage my employees to do it as well. Contrary to web filtering and short sighted managers' beliefs, it's really not a good thing to force someone to remain engaged non-stop for an entire day. Their productivity actually goes down. Finally, some researchers have come up with a study to support that. Researchers have shown that letting employees do some personal surfing at work leads to "better time management, stress reduction, improvement of skill sets and helping to achieve a balance between work and personal life." This follows a study earlier this year that said employees who surfed at work ended up making it up elsewhere. Perhaps people are finally realizing there's a difference between time spent working and productivity. Now where's the study saying work-time naps are also helpful to productivity?

Do you work ''in Adobe?'' Good, now
there's a magazine just for you--Layers!
04/05/2005 12:14 PM
Today, KW Media Group, publishers of Mac Design Magazine, relaunched the magazine as Layers -- The "How-To" Magazine for Everything Adobe. Each issue is dedicated to giving readers the latest step-by-step tutorials, tips, and tricks for all of Adobe's design, video, and photography applications.

What happened to Mac Design Magazine? Why the new name?...Scott Kelby explains..."The magazine has grown, changed, and evolved so much over the past few years that the word "design" doesn't really explain all that we are anymore. If you've read us for any length time, you know we're also a magazine for digital photographers, with digital photography news, tips, tutorials, and camera and printer reviews in every issue. Plus, from the very beginning, we've been the only Mac magazine to have an entire section dedicated to digital video editing. But we found that most photographers and video editors didn't really know that because they don't generally reach for a magazine that has the word "Design" in big letters on the cover."

The first issue of Layers (May/June) will be available on newsstands nationwide on May 10, 2005, and is also available by subscription.

Airport security tells a Mom to put her infant on the ground so they can check for a bomb in her bra.
That rule about not holding a baby during a search--what is up with that?? Believe me, I am fully capable of holding my child far enough from my body to get that little wand where it needs to go, but there was just no negotiating a compromise. I had a purple, writhing, screaming baby, a toddler, and a preschooler with me, not to mention a double stroller clogging up the gate, and in the end I actually had to put the baby on the ground so that they could put me in the off-balance stance, search me, and invesitgate the wire in my bra.

Seems like today is the day for stories about hackers finding and pointing out vulnerabilities... and getting in trouble for it. It certainly is a very fine line. Now, Adrian Lamo who was famous for breaking, entering and then telling has been sentenced to 6 months home detention and 2 years probation, rather than any time in jail. It's a bit surprising he didn't get slapped with worse punishment, considering the way hacking cases normally turn out these days.

The holiday season has passed, leaving behind the usual clutter of reflections and predictions. Four topics have been particular darlings this past season: offshoring; open source penetration; the impending Salesforce.com IPO; and business process outsourcing. As varied as these topics are, they all share a common rope: 2004 will be a pivotal year for evolving role of software development.
