Police In UK Want To Stop Your Car At
The Press Of A Button

Police In UK Want To Stop Your Car At
The Press Of A Button
12/22/2003 02:11 AM
Over in the UK, police are requesting the power to stop cars remotely at the press of a button. The technology, of course, is not difficult, and already some anti-theft systems let people kill the engines remotely. Oddly, the story includes a quote from police saying they already have the power to press a remote kill switch on cars - but details aren't given. The worries are (a) that people will freak out about Big Brother-ish use of technology (b) or that the cars won't be able to be stopped safely. Considering that most attempts to do automatic braking scare people, the idea of completely stopping a car without warning the driver could go over quite badly. Related to this, though, police are also suggesting using the same technology to enforce mandatory speed limits - where the car refuses to go above a certain speed. Furthermore, the article suggests that these speeds could be made variable, such as lowering the top speed on certain roads during inclement weather. Not sure about in the UK, but I imagine there would be riots if such technology were introduced in the US. People here seem to believe that speeding is a right.

Call Congress on Sept 14, stop INDUCE!

Call Congress on Sept 14, stop INDUCE! 09/08/2004 02:13 PM
Cory Doctorow: Nicholas sez:
Save Betamax, is a new Downhill Battle project to bring together all the opposition to the INDUCE Act into one big Congress call-in day on September 14. The RIAA and MPAA are making a big push to get this thing through, especially since they lost the Grokster case, and it could come to the Senate floor at any time. Sending emails and faxes is great, but we need to show that opposition to the INDUCE Act or whatever variant is being devised, is very broad. We think working to defend the Betamax decision is a good rallying point for people to come together on.

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom
03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Tian says: "On March 7th, I took photos of a tow truck driver that damages a vehicle then tries to get away in Phoenix.

Sunday night (March 20th), Phoenix news channel 15 used a bait car and discovered that local tow truck company(s) would actually push cars into tow-away zone first, then held the cars as "hostages" for ransom."

I just watched it. The TV crew set up a white SUV as a bait car, and parked it legally. Time and time again, tow trucks would push the car into a red zone, snap a photo, and tow it away. Of course, when the TV crew showed the owner of the tow truck company how his drivers had pushed the car into the red lane, the owner denied responsibility. "I didn't push it," he said.

Arizona lawmakers have been half-heartedly writing legislation to stop this (isn't it illegal to do this already) but the tow truck has so far been able to convince them not to ruin the good thing they've got going. Link to RealMedia file. The segment starts about 20:15 into the broadcast.

Breaking News: No Two Terabyte Card So
Stop Asking

Breaking News: No Two Terabyte Card So
Stop Asking
08/11/2004 09:58 AM

Aaah, you guys are killing me. The new µcard format can reach sizes of UP TO TWO TERABYTES, yes, I know. What you all seem to be missing is that it ISN'T A TWO TERABYTE CARD YET. Nobody knows what sizes they will release first, but I bet you all eight million ass coins that they will be available in the standard 512MB and 1GB versions like everything else. Maybe they'll get showy and launch with a TWO GIGABYTE card. But I promise you - swear to you on the grave of our rotting savior - there will be NO TWO TERABYTE MEMORY CARD NEXT YEAR.

And as I said in my first story, even Sony's current Memory Stick Duo and Pro formats support sizes up to two terabytes, but that doesn't mean you can go down to the Recockulous Memory Store and pick up a 2TB card. The real news of the µcard format is that it has a fast transfer speed. But that's it! That's all there is! No two terabyte cards! Stop asking!
