Processing at the Speed of Light
Processing at the Speed of Light
10/30/2003 05:58 AMIsraeli startup Lenslet has built a computer processor that uses
optics instead of silicon, enabling it to perform 8 trillion
operations per second, equivalent to a supercomputer and 1,000 times
faster than standard processors.

More Trouble With Red Light And Speed
Camera
11/04/2003 03:39 PMBob Dole writes
"Red light and speed camera supporters always claim that the camera
never lies. These news items suggest otherwise. An Australian woman lost her license because a speed camera showed
she was driving 104 MPH. The problem? Her nearly 30 year old Datsun's
top speed is only 73MPH. Likewise, a Raleigh woman found herself trying to fight
a camera ticket sent from a city she has never visited. Back down
under, the police escorted hundreds of Aussie motorcyclists into a
speed camera trap as they drove to an event organized by the police.
Police collect $12,000. In each case, the use of machine
enforcement causes the burden of proof to be placed on the innocent.
They're each forced to fight city hall every time the camera is wrong
(which is more than the proponents admit). The revolt against this
setup grows in the UK with speed camera operators calling
in sick because of the "stress" caused by angry motorists."
This seems to be getting a lot of attention lately. We've also had
another submission as
frankiejr writes
"Seems as though a woman in South Wales was clocked at
480mph by a speed camera and was promptly issued a ticket.
Funniest part about it is that it was a really cheap car that can
barely reach 50mph." Seems like this is the topic of the season.

04/09/2004 04:05 PMStoplight to punish suburban
speeders / Pleasanton finds a way to slow impatient drivers:
Fascinating — they've found a way to turn speeders into red
light runners.
In a move unprecedented in the Bay Area, the city's
traffic engineers have created a traffic signal with attitude. It
senses when a speeder is approaching and metes out swift punishment.
It doesn't write a ticket. It immediately turns from green to
yellow to red.

begins to supply the processor in a few months it will be shrunk to 15
x 15 cm with a height of 1.7 cm, roughly the size of a Palm Pilot.
"In five years we plan to shrink it to a single chip," project manager
Asaf Schlezinger said.

05/05/2004 02:48 AMThis physics HOWTO explains a technique for verifying ht espeed of
light using a microwave oven and a bunch of marshmallows.
[P]ut the dish of marshmallows in the microwave and cook on low heat.
Microwaves do not cook evenly and the marshmallows will begin to melt
at the hottest spots in the microwave. (I leaned this from our Food
Science teacher Anita Cornwall.) Heat the marshmallows until they
begin to melt in four or five different spots. Remove the dish from
the microwave and observe the melted spots. Take the ruler and measure
the distance between the melted spots. You will find that one distance
repeats over and over. This distance will correspond to half the
wavelength of the microwave, about 6 cm. Now turn the oven around and
look for a small sign that gives you the frequency of the microwave.
Most commercial microwaves operate at 2450 MHz.
All you do now is multiply the frequency by the wavelength. The
product is the speed of light.

about this one? However, when I got down to looking at it properly, I
found that Zend was indeed very different to others.

Macworld review: Speed Download 2.3
06/22/2004 09:26 AMFor some people, Internet downloads are never fast enough. If you're
one of them, you might be tempted by Speed Download 2.3.4, from
YazSoft, which is supposed to accelerate the speed at which files
download from the Internet. But in our tests, Speed Download did
almost nothing to speed up downloads. And in some instances, files
took longer to download with Speed Download than without it. Luckily,
the program has other virtues.

they probably don’t justify a trade-up for most users who bought
one of last year’s models. But for new buyers, the minor
alterations add real value. See how the newest Power Mac G5s
perform.
