Long time no bl0g

Long time no bl0g 03/29/2005 01:50 AM

Apologies -- I've been digging into the work of actually writing some chapters of my book, and something had to give. Since the kids still expect to be tended and entertained, the blog had to be left neglected and bored. I could hear its whimpers from the corner, but I had to harden my heart. (The kids scream louder, anyway.)

Conveniently, I no longer need to explain the deep psychological reasons behind my choice not to blog a whole lot of the work of my book, because Steven Johnson has said it all. Johnson has a new book coming out next month, Every thing Bad is Good For You, a defense of pop culture that I am looking forward to reading as a reward to myself once I finally finish the half-dozen books on software disasters I am working my way through.

Webcams that run a long time on AAA
batteries
06/17/2005 03:50 PM

I remember in the last house we lived in that I could aim my webcam down the hallway from my office and actually see into the kitchen. I had pcanywhere running on the PC so when I could take a few snaps to hopefully catch a glimpse of the kids. Well one day I turn on the camera and who is standing up on a counter reaching into a cabinet that is off limits. (candy)

So I pick up the cell and call home and ask my wife to put my daughter on the phone and I ask here what she was doing standing on the counter with her hands in the cabinet that has candy.

I get silence on the line as she tries to figure out how i knew well thats was the extent of the fun I have had with a webcam, but it seems other people are being innovative and putting webcams in all kinds of interesting places and running them remotely. A new camera though will last a long time on set of batteries check out this link. [Yahoo]

A week is a long time in politics

A week is a long time in politics 03/20/2003 08:31 AM
The evening of March 18 saw the the Labour Government, assisted by the Conservative Party, defeat a rebel motion which opposed impending military action in Iraq by 396 votes to 217. John Reid, Labour Party Chairman immediately appeared on BBC2's Newsnight saying, A singular message has been sent from [Parliament] to the Iraqi reigime, who thought that we were incapable of action because we were a degenerate and enfeebled liberal democracy. This may seem like a victory for Blair's Labour Government and their policy of supporting the US. But the size of this rebellion, and a previous vote also on Iraq, are unprecedented in recent British history and follow a week of open and candid criticism from members of Tony Blair's own Cabinet and a series of resignations. This article aims to assess the scale and character of the rebellion, and speculates on its impact on British foreign policy, which has recently had such a disproportionate effect on debate at the UN and elsewhere.

Brad Oliver, long time Mac developer, rants about the sorry states of Mac installers and third-party Mac tools. I have to agree on the Mac installers front. If all you're doing is making a Cocoa app to distribute via a dmg file, you're fine. If you need to install kernel extensions, etc, you're going to have a miserable time of it.

The Long Way

The Long Way 01/05/2005 09:10 AM
Ellen Macarthur is trying to break the solo round-the-world sailing record. From her website you can see stills and videos while she’s enroute, and track her progress. Meanwhile, the Vendee Globe is underway, with 20 sailors racing a similar course – also nonstop, and with no outside assistance allowed. The first solo nonstop circumnavigation was only 35 years ago, and the record has gone from 313 days to 72. It’s the slow way around, to be sure, and that’s probably why only a few dozen people have done it.

Well. That didn't take long.

The anti-Kerry book Unfit for Command is #1 on Amazon. Unfortunately, the book, not even released, has entered the downward spiral of diminished credibility of its authors. The "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" have been found to include a man who changed his story right after Kerry entered the race and another who flat-out retracts his accusations. Meanwhile, another SBVfT member has accused Kerry of not really deserving his Bronze Star because the events leading to it never occured... even though the Veteran recieved a Bronze Star for the same day's events he claims now never happened.
