Michael Kimsal runs a company that does PHP training. I thought it would be interesting in finding out how other people learnt PHP, so we agreed to an interview.

What do students (of PHP) find hard to learn?

The hardest areas of functionality we used to try to cover in detail were PDF generation and using GD. Every student *wants* to know how to do these things, but usually when they start to see how difficult it is to build PDFs and graphics by hand with the individual functions, they want to skip it! :)

We've begun introducing JPGraph and HTMLDoc overviews which help demonstrate the practical benefits of graphic and PDF generation while giving them an easier way to get those benefits.

In terms of PHP itself, many students trip up over single quote/double quote issues, variable name case-sensitivity and basic variable name typos. Variable scope is something which catches people offguard too, but is normally covered and drilled into them by the second day - usually no problems with scoping after day 2.

PHP OO, limited as it is, is also mixed. Some students find it quite straightforward, some struggle, and some reject it outright. Just like the PHP community at large. :)

Scoble reports that Simon Phipps is feeling persecuted.  I saw the Phipps post, too, but couldn't decide what to make of it.  I've had Phipps direct similar allegations at me, in my opinion quite unfairly, so I hesitate to judge this latest tizzy without hearing from any of the others involved.

On the other hand, maybe Phipps wasn't so unfair with me.  The "how evil are you?" test tells me:

Hanging out around the convention, I've encountered a number of the Republican faithful who aren't delegates. They warm up to me when they don't find horns or a tail. Talking to them, I discover they're like many people who call themselves Republicans but aren't really Republicans. At least not in the radical-right way that George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, John Ashcroft and Co. have defined Republicans.

I asked one man who told me he was a "proud Republican," "Do you think we need strong laws to protect our air and water?"

"Well, sure," he said. "Who doesn't?"

I asked whether women should have equal rights, including the same pay as men.

"Absolutely," he replied.

"Would you discriminate against someone because he or she is gay?"

"Um, no." The pause — I get that a lot when I ask this question — is usually because the average good-hearted person instantly thinks about a gay family member or friend.

"Today's CBS This Morning ran an interesting profile on MIT Professor Michael Hawley. Aside from recently publishing a super-jumbo-sized book about the Kingdom of Bhutan, he has invented (among other things) an interactive kitchen counter, designed a heart monitor embedded in jewelry, contributed to the MIT Toys of Tomorrow project and has written several classical compositions for piano. What really struck me was Hawley's observation that 'today's computers aren't musical enough.' For him, there is 'no difference between an ivory keyboard and a QWERTY keyboard.' I think it's a good thing that the mainstream media is starting to show how 'computer nerds' (as the correspondent identified Hawley) can be rich individuals with much more to their lives than hardware upgrades, programming languages and pocket protectors."
