Hotspot Helper

Hotspot Helper 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
MediaTracker is offering a low-cost way for venues to manage their hotspots: The management software, ControlAP, costs $149 and can support several platforms and both external APs plugged into a computer or an internal wireless card. Because the software is Java based, it can be run from a handheld with a wireless card. "It's a do-it-yourself mechanism to control hotspots," said Dario Laverde, MediaTracker's founder. "The initial target is cafes and small store fronts." The software enables a captive portal Web page where end users can sign in or see a welcome page if the hot spot is free. For now, a cafe may decide to offer 30 minutes of free use, then require customers to approach the counter where they pay the barista for additional use. A cafe could also ask customers to buy another coffee in exchange for additional use rather than set a price based on time, Laverde suggested. An employee authorizes additional use from a computer behind the counter where the ControlAP software can be integrated with existing point-of-sale software. The next version of ControlAP will support credit card billing. The software logs traffic and allows a cafe to block URLs or users by MAC address. It can be used to manage wired connections, too, so a cafe that may have some wired computers available for customers can manage those together with users of the Wi-Fi network from the same tool. Laverde says that thousands of people have downloaded the free version of the software, which is meant to serve as a trial version because it limits simultaneous users to five and offers stripped-down features. The full version of the software was just introduced this week. MediaTracker isn't alone in the market chasing independent cafes that don't want to partner with any of the larger hotspot operators, but it does offer some unique differences from its competitors. Surf and Sip, for example, offers a hosted hotspot management solution that either costs $50 per month if the hotspot is free for users, or 25 percent of profits for a paid location. Sputnik offers a robust solution for managing hotspots but is designed for the small to medium-sized hotspot operator that has multiple locations. AirPath Wireless also offers a hotspot management solution but seems to be targeting larger hot spot operators--Sprint uses AirPath's solution. NoCatAuth is also an option but appropriate mostly for technical folks....

I was surprised at the number of things that they have restrictions on. One in particular seemed like the kiss of death: No porn for you unless it's from eBay's Mature section. Won't somebody think of the cam girls? With many banks now offering some sort of internet check-writing facility is PayPal really even a valid business model anymore outside of eBay?

Public Service Helper Robots in Korea

Public Service Helper Robots in Korea 03/14/2005 06:03 PM
The Swirling Brain sent us a Digital Chosunilbo news article about the coming deployment of Public Service Helper Robots (PSHRs) in 20 post offices in Korea. The robots will assist customers with tasks like checking postal codes. The PSHR is one version of a more general robot called the Information Contents Robot (ICR) or the Ubiquitous Robotic Companion (URC). The ICR will also be deployed soon for healthcare applications which include taking care of diabetics and reading stories to children. The Korea Ministry of Information and Communication hopes to deploy one million broadband connected ICR robots to apartment buildings by 2007. The robots were developed by ETRI and Next Eye. One version of the robot seems to be pictured in the ETRI site banner. A rendering of another UCR robot can be found in an older Korean Times story.

music remix

music remix 06/05/2004 01:42 PM
Jerry Lobdill writes with this interesting story about a remix culture now regulated:
This is an example of the kind of art flamenco is--or was. And I speak particularly about the guitar here. The roots of flamenco are lost in the mists of time. They go back at least into the late 1700s, but probably farther. At this time there are over 40 distinct forms which are each characterized by a specific repetitive rhythmic pattern termed "compas", a specified musical mode (major, minor, or phrygian), and certain signature resolution phrases or other unique musical features.  I have played flamenco guitar for 47 years. When I was learning to play, the current versions of the forms could be traced back to a few virtuosos who came on the scene as early as 1905 or thereabouts. Every form is played as a series of sections that are distinct in melody and are sandwiched between more or less standard rhythmic sections characteristic of the form. The melodic sections are called "falsetas". The sections are played in whatever order a player chooses and players spend spare time trying to invent new falsetas or modifying old ones. Most players know the genealogy of their falsetas to some extent, but anything that is older than a couple of generations is usually of unknown origin.  Lore has it that great flamenco guitarists invent falsetas on the fly during performance. This is nonsense. But that's another story. Hardly any guitarist can read music and/or uses any kind of notation to commit falsetas to paper. In the cante (song) the verses (letras) and the melodies are generally very old though most are associated with the name of the originator.  Through the 1950s it was expected that players would play mostly traditional things with minor additional innovations. The falsetas of a particular player did not usually evolve from one recording to the next, and, indeed, players had favorite falsetas that they played for years. But as soon as recording industry moguls got involved all that changed. Nowadays they are claiming copyright on everything that is recorded, even the traditional portions that have been played since antiquity. Guitarists such as Paco de Lucia are pushed and prodded to innovate, and he has said publicly that the creation of new material is the most difficult part of what he does in this modern environment. Yet even his innovations (when he plays flamenco instead of the bastardized watered down stuff he mostly plays these days) contain traditional resolution phrases and rhythmic sections that define the forms and are ancient anonymous creations. Spanish copyright has gone crazy locking up the public domain along with the new in recent years. I have reams of manuscript transcripts of fabulous flamenco guitar music that will never be published because of the abuse and tyranny of copyright law. Like many non-Spanish flamenco guitar players, I play what I consider to be the best--just like Spaniards did before commercialization of the art. It's sad that all this will never be published for the enjoyment of the world.
(cf. "It's simple.")

The Problem With Online Music

The Problem With Online Music 07/04/2004 02:06 PM
The New York Times today hits the nail on the head: if you’re buying music over the net, you’re buying it in severely damaged condition. When I plug my computer into the really good stereo at home, the difference between the way music sounds coming off CD or vinyl or a good FM signal, and the crippled version from MP3 compression isn’t subtle. I used to think that if you were listening to music on headphones on a bus or train or plane or in a crowd, the MP3 lossage really didn’t matter much. But recently I’ve been listening to the Shure 3C phones, and it’s obvious that we really shouldn’t be ignoring these compression issues; in particular since lossless compression is available right here, right now.

Torrentocracy

Torrentocracy 06/21/2004 05:08 PM

Here's one that should whet Deane's recently acquired appetite for BitTorrenting TV Shows. Torrentocracy is a plugin for MythTV that will let you download and watch BitTorrent-delivered multimedia via your TV remote by hooking into RSS feeds. This would basically turn a MythTV-enabled TV into a Tivo that doesn't care when shows are on, since it sucks them off the Internet instead of off the airwaves.

Torrentocracy (pronounced like the word democracy) is the combination of RSS, bit torrent, your television and your remote control. In effect, it is what gives any properly motivated person or entity the ability to have their own TV station.

Remember what Microsoft says, folks. Linux doesn't innovate, it only copies.
