Thanks to everyone who showed up in Mar del Plata to participate in the ICANN meeting. I thought that the discussion was healthy and productive and although we moved forward on a number of things, we are left with a lot of work to do based on the feedback we received on the strategic plan, the board governance guidelines, .pro, .net, IDNs, transparency, process and a number of other topics. Special thanks to staff for running such a great meeting in the absence of our CEO Paul Twomey. I think you did an excellent job.

Thanks to everyone who showed up for dinner last night and special thanks to Mariano for organizing everything. It was great to meet the Argentine bloggers. I'm sorry I was late. Our bus from Mar del Plata broke down and we had have them send a new one.

Thanks to Mookie letting me stay at his place in Buenos Aires.

I'm off to San Francisco today to do my usual rounds and to go a Institute for the Future retreat.

Since my flight doesn't leave until this evening, I hope I can do a bit of moblogging in Buenos Aires.

So the day before yesterday didn't go quite as I'd planned. I didn't go and see Dinah or her kittens, but I did get to give Flakes to Heather and then go with her to Taco Bell where we consumed about $16 worth of faux Mexican cuisine between us. Then there was the car wash, and the drive back into the city to go say hi to Derek, two chihuahuas and a cat named Spoo before wandering off to kid robot (dumb toys purchased: 2) and then Giant Robot in Haight Ashbury. Then there was a nice "Blue Meanie" smoothie in a wifi-enabled café which was pretty bloody pleasant, all things considered. The next planned excusion was the epic walk over to the Tonga rooms, which would actually have been pretty bloody epic if I hadn't walked in completely the opposite direction for the first twenty minutes or so. So I got a cab with a driver who listened to light country and suffered manfully the hell of Tim McGraw's My Next Thirty Years (and I quote):

You see what I'm talking about? Anyway - so I got to the Fairmont a bit early and so decided to loiter around a bit in the foyer and read my new book while all the smartly dressed people looked at me strangely and tried to remember my face just in case they'd need to identify me in a Guantanamo tribunal later in the year. And then the event began and I got to talk to a couple of dozen neat cool web people that I just don't get to see enough. I danced (badly) with Mena and Dinah and Heather and chatted a lot to David about what it was like to be an Englishman living in the States at the moment which was extremely interesting. I felt a bit sorry for my poor ex-flatmate Mella who had just got off the plane in San Francisco and come straight to the bar because she didn't know anyone, but I think she enjoyed herself. And of course the bar's fake thunder, lightning, rain and floating boat/island/band were as awesome as ever...

Yesterday started a little more sedately with an enormous cooked breakfast over at the Pork Store with Leslie, Lance (also here) and Mella. Mella and I then wandered up into town, up Valencia and past a few second hand stores up to the Civic Center and then up Market for a bit of an explore. (This feels a bit like a 'what I did on my holiday' tract, so apologies for that.) And then after a few confusing disorganisational miscarriages, we ended up with a friend of Mella's called Emily driving through Chinatown, then walking up to Coit Tower and then down to Pier 39 for Oysters and general seafood. Then Mella wandered off to meet Emily's parents, while I returned back to Leslie's (past the San Francisco Bear Fair), met up with Ben Cerveny and Webb, drove around the city in a convertible car before wandering up to Molly's place and drinking a few glasses of wine and basically passing out. Nice evening!

And what's next over the next couple of days?

• Visit Six Apart
• Meet up with Kevin Marks for lunch
• See Ben Cerveny and Jim Speth and talk about geeky shit
• Try and do some gay stuff of some kind

Ping. Now in San Francisco after cool drive with fun people in which I mostly slept and pointed at wind farms and acres of densely packed cows. Had subsequent great fun at the SixApart Mixer thing where I met loads of people - some for the first time, others not. Looked slightly nervous around some people who do really good work. Touched a couple of them without them noticing (or at least without them calling the police). Got a free USB dongle thing and saw the 3.1 release of MT which doesn't seem overly dramatic at first but kind of sits in the back of your head and wiggles its tush in the direction of interesting things. Cab back to Leslie's place - talking about The O.C. and TV shows in general when I get to pull out my trump card - super-secret super-cool thing that made Leslie go oooooh. Don't think I'm going to make it to LobbyCon now though. Shame!

I'm quite enjoying not taking this weblog as seriously as normal for a few days. It feels pretty liberating, although possibly not very productive or good in the longer term. God knows what it's going to be like going back to London. I can already feel it on the horizon and must confess am vaguely dreading it.

So what did I do yesterday... Er... Basically went for lunch with Kevin and Jesse where we talked about Apple and set-top boxes and food and stuff, wandered into Technorati and said hi to people (wave to Tantek), micro-bumped into Joi, then got the CalTrain up to see Six Apart (purely for fun), got a train back with Anil and finally wandered off to The Cafe for my required dose of gaydom, which was a bit weird as it was hip-hop night and I felt like everyone's fat beardy grandfather. So I got a bit drunk and danced clumsily and collapsed back at Leslie's unconscious at about one. Funny day.

So, back from Amsterdam for one day and then off to Ashridge for a day/night for a work thing. I got a decent night's sleep for pretty much the first time since I've been back in the country and am feeling slightly more creative and desperate to make something since coming back from Eurofoo. In the depths of last night we went into the grounds to try and find the bible circle - a stone bible on a plinth in the middle of a ring of enormous pine tress - and I managed to walk into a huge branch and scrape up half my face. And on the train this morning, I saw a woman wearing a T-shirt that read "I seem to have mislaid my boyfriend" reading a book called "It's Ok, I'm Wearing Really Big Knickers". DNS on my work wifi network appears to be buggering around or I'd try and find you some links... Hopefully in the next couple of days I'll start writing about proper grown-up things again. But in the meantime, have fun!

So here's the plan - I'm flying to San Francisco on Saturday and I'll be hanging around until the 26th with all my geek hipster friends. But don't take that to mean that I'm busy all the time - I'm keen as ever to see (and meet) as many neat people as possible. When I go to San Francisco, I normally try and set up some kind of drunken evening at the Tonga Room - because the rain and the thunder and the tiki stylings and the lounge act are all so cool. But I am also aware that the cocktails are terrible and that maybe I've milked the experience as much as I can. So, guys, does anyone have any better ideas?

While I'm at it, I might as well put out another call - are there any glorious geek events, any particularly cool exhibitions or bars that I'd regret not going to? It's not every day I get a full week in my spiritual homeland to reconnect with the mothership. So what should I be doing?

Of course, no trip comes without its inconveniences, and this one is particularly poignant - while I'm on the flight to SFO I'll be missing the big reveal in the final episode of Doctor Who. This is doubly galling since I'm currently enduring hundreds of lunatic comments on my Doctor Who and Bad Wolf post. Regular visitors to the site may be getting bored of hearing about this, but things are way out of control - the post has received seven hundred comments as of now, and sometimes they come in at the rate of one or two a minute. The whole thing's starting to remind me of Kottke's famous Matrix meltdown. All of which is a roundabout way of saying don't spoil it for me until I've got my hands on a copy.

Anyway, as of this evening, I'm either in pre-flight limbo or stuck in some terminal interzone, and I'm hoping to take the opportunity to catch up with all the notes and writing I've been doing recently but haven't had a chance to post to my site. So more later...

I must admit I wasn't expecting anything earth-shattering from Steve Jobs yesterday and for the most part I wasn't disappointed. While unveiling some pretty cool toys, both hardware and software, he failed to deliver anything that on it's surface will immediately sway a consumer to purchase a Mac over a PC.

I say 'on it's surface' because Garage Band may become another one of those things that people fall in love with. The fact that he added it to the $49 iLife package is amazing. Face it, human beings love to create things and that includes music. Today's musical offerings are pretty bland so creating your own might be a good alternative. Garage Band now puts professional level music composition in the hands of the average consumer. A demo I saw last night showed a $99 keyboard hooked up to it and it sounded exactly like a grand piano. Not that cheesy midi sound you'd expect. Pretty impressive.

Other announcements included improvements to iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD as well as new iPod Minis. The knock against the new smaller iPods will be that for the capacity they aren't much cheaper than a slightly larger iPod. Keep in mind you are not paying for capacity, but rather the physical size of the unit. It's the size of a business card. It's the same reason Sony is able sell those tiny Vaios. People want smaller rather than bigger. It's not the $100 iPod everybody was hoping for, but they do come in five fashionable colors. Give him credit, Steve Jobs knows how to sell to your vanity.

The one thing that caught my eye yesterday was not mentioned at MacWorld. iTunes Music Store added lists of Billboards Top 100 songs for every year going back to 1946. While the lists are not complete they are fairly comprehensive. I must admit the fuel behind my Napster addiction a couple of years ago was how easy it was to find music I remembered from high school and college. I was never terribly interested in finding new albums on Napster or Kazaa because the vast majority of new music is rather unappealing. This is the kind of small enhancement that I think will keep Apple and iTMS ahead of Walmart and Napster in the online music biz.

All in all, not a bad day for Apple. Since these announcements focused primarily on software I'd expect some new hardware sometime this summer. Possibly G5 Powerbooks or 3Ghz Power Macs. It's the 20th anniversary of the Macintosh this year so I have no doubt that Jobs has something good in the pipeline.

My first year in San Francisco, I'm living in Russian Hill.

One day I hear squawking up above like I've never heard, and I love birds, don't know why, but I look up.

I see a flock of big green parrots, almost feels miraculous.

Since then, I learn that SF has two flocks of such parrots, and for years, Marc Bittner has been studying and feeding them. I feel this is really cool.

Today, I just finished his book the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill and it was really good. It also discusses a related documentary by Judy Irving, same subject, and I gotta see it sometime. [craigblog]

When I lived on the Embarcadero - flocks of squaking parrots would coming flying across the sky.  It's wild.  A truly San Francisco experience.

Good news, everyone!

When the press release went out about MacWorld, a lot of WWdN readers asked if there would be a reading or signing for people who were unable to afford admission to the conference.

Well, it turns out that we have a mole at Bor ders in Union Square. She made an introduction for me, and I am super excited to announce that I've been invited to their store for a reading and signing when I'm in town!

It looks like the Borders website hasn't been updated yet, but I'm scheduled for Friday January 14th at 7pm.

Oh! I just got a Really Big Idea™, that could be a whole bunch of Supercool: I have a short list of stories from Just A Geek that I choose from when I perform at bookstores. Now that every other company is starting a music download store (even if no one is making any money off of it), people are beginning to realize that maybe it makes sense to come up with a single format that works for anyone. Of course, some might say that we've already got formats that work, but the folks over in the recording industry seem to have a mental block when it comes to the formats that everyone likes to use. So, now, Microsoft, Universal Music and others, under the title of the Content Reference Forum, are teaming up to create a new music format - but one that makes it easier for them to make you buy the music. There aren't all that many details, but it appears to be going back to some of the very original concepts behind a hypertext system: that content only needs to be available once, and any time you want to access it, you just link to it. In other words, instead of offering downloadable music, the plan is to offer links to music that is served up remotely. Of course, one of the "features" of such a system is that the content providers can know (and, potentially, charge you) every time you want to hear that certain song. It's an interesting idea, but it seems to make the music less valuable. Suddenly, it can only be listened to from an internet connected machine, you don't actually own anything, and the big content providers get to keep a big database of exactly what songs you listen to when. Doesn't sound all that appealing to me. The one thing that it does have going for it, is that it allows people to "share" - if, by share, you mean point someone to a link and let them pay for it themselves.

Hardy news site, The Register, recently published a detailed analysis of the file sharing protocol Bit Torrent. Bit Torrent has received attention in the main stream news after reports that it was carrying as much as 50% of all peer 2 peer (p2p) traffic, which in tern amounted to a massive 30% of all the traffic on the internet. The paper, by Dr. Johan Pouwelse, examines the protocol and looks especially at one of the largest bit-torrent hubs, Suprnova.org. He examines how just 20 moderators solve the problem of fake files, something that plagues the traditional file sharing networks like Kazaa.

Dr Powelse notes that the major problems facing hubs like suprnova are fakes and maintaining hub availability. The availability of files on bit torrent is based on a centralised system; without it, the network fails as users cannot access the trackers. Decentralising bit torrent has already begun - Suprnova have started a project called "Exeem" which apparently has 5,000 beta testers trialling it, and has an ultimate aim of taking the best of Kazaa (a decentralised network) and merging it with Bit Torrent. Decentralisation removes the issue of poor availability at the tracker end, yet0 it also provides more scope for fake files and a reduction in data integrity at the user end.

The paper concludes that bit-torrent needs to evolve to create incentives to users to seed files. Bit-torrent as a protocol is a system that’s here to stay; it enjoys more and more usage from more main stream content providers. Yes, there is a lot of illegitimate use of the protocol, but unlike Kazaa, these users should not be allowed to over shadow the usefulness to legitimate users of the bit torrent protocol.

[Update] Since this article was published, Suprnova has shutdown as a hub for torrents. Although this cannot be confirmed, the shutdown is very likely related to legal action from the Hollywood against tracker websites; earlier in the week many other sites were taken down. The effectiveness of the takedowns could be massive; the paper below notes that when on the Suprnova mirrors went offline during their monitoring period, they saw a massive reduction in the number of users downloading files through the site.

Bit Torrent and the ability to download everything in one click (is this the end of Direct TV, Tivo and the music business?!).

Used BitTorrent a little bit when it first came out and was a bit underwhelmed. It didn’t work, there weren’t a lot of places to find files, etc.

I decided to take another look at it when a designer friend of mine was telling me that he has the latest version of every single piece of design software on his Mac compliments of bit torrent (yes, I know it’s wrong… not the point I’m trying to make, the point is coming :-).

Part I: I installed bit torrent and immediately noticed an amazing new trend (prob. not new to all of you) of people posting dozens of albums in one RAR file for download. Huge file sizes in the 500 to 4,000 meg size range. The last season of seven seasons of Southpark, every Nirvanna album and here is another file with every Howard Stern radio show from March in one file.

In one click you grab one really well organized, clean and deep sets of files—scary.

Part II: A couple of month ago I got the Gateway Connected DVD player. For $195 it connects via WiFi to my desktop and I can hit the My Music or My Videos button on the remote control and pull up those directories on my hard drive (in the other room).

Part III: Today I moved into my new apartment in Santa Monica and was faced with the standard $100 month cable/dish bill and I’m thinking “dang, I only watch less then a half dozen TV shows and they are all here on bit torrent… maybe I should save the $1,200 a year and just download the shows and watch them via my Gateway Connected DVD player?”

The Point/Question: How soon before you’ll be able-with one click-download every prime-time TV show or last year’s top 500 CDs in one click?!

(Note: This is not a trick question, I have yet to find a file containing that much content—however, I did find a file with last weeks top 100 singles that someone put together in one nice package).

Apple just released an update to is Xcode development tools, but Apple's content distribution network is slow and poky, and as Danny notes, it "won't let you resume downloads using wget -c." So here's a .torrent for Xcode. Link (via Oblomovka)

Researchers at Microsoft's computer science lab in Cambridge have developed a peer-to-peer filesharing system that they say overcomes the scheduling problems associated with existing distribution protocols such as Bit Torrent.

The researchers claim download times are between 20-30 per cent faster, using their network coding approach, than on systems that only code at the server, and between 200 and 300 per cent faster than distributing un-encoded information.

Download the Windows XP Service Pack 2: The guys who were doing Microsoft a favor by pushing Service Pack 2 via Bit Torrent got slapped down by Redmond.

Microsoft sent DMCA takedown notices to our two webhosts, one of which was just linking to a torrent file on another server. We've stood up to these kinds of legal threats before (see the Grey Tuesday protests), but we decided not to bother this time, because we started this site primarily as a demonstration and to that end it's already been a huge success.
