Wi-Fi Pricing Droping in U.K.--Debatable

Wi-Fi Pricing Droping in U.K.--Debatable 11/13/2003 01:34 PM
This article points only to anecdotal evidence from a journalist to claim that the price of using public hot spots in the U.K. is dropping: In any developing market, service providers walk a tight rope between charging enough to cover their startup costs and failing to attract customers because of sky high prices. At the moment, the price of a subscription for Wi-Fi services is too high for most except the serious traveler, especially because there aren't yet enough hot spots. Hopefully a greater number of hot spots will attract more customers, which will in turn lead to lower prices. Maybe that's already starting to happen in the U.K. Interestingly, this intrepid traveler rants about how insanely high the cost of Wi-Fi is in Europe. He visited nine cities in the U.S. and had Wi-Fi access in eight. Just one of those charged a mere $9 a day for access. He then stayed in seven hotels in Europe and one offered Wi-Fi, for $60 a day and it never worked. Two of the hotels in Europe didn't have phones so no Internet connection was available from the room. To be fair, this traveler doesn't mention which cities he stayed in so maybe he was pretty far off the beaten path. Still, I've stayed in decent hotels in Europe that have these ancient phone systems through which you can't even dial up. By contrast, just last week I took a road trip from Seattle to northern California and even cheap hotels in tiny towns at least had dial up while some had broadband wired access. Since the wired access in European hotels is generally poor, hotel managers there might see a great opportunity in Wi-Fi. Wireless networks will be much easier for them to deploy in a building that isn’t already wired....

Dutch Town Gets Wi-Fi

Dutch Town Gets Wi-Fi 12/02/2003 02:31 PM
WinQ, a European WISP, has been working on a city-wide Wi-Fi zone in Kenniswijk Eindhoven in the Netherlands since July. The network uses Proxim APs and the Nomadix Universal Subscriber Gateway which enables customer acquisition and service provisioning. The city center, cafes, hotels and the railway station are already connected. The city council uses the network to broadcast live city council meetings over the Web. The city and WinQ are looking at the project as an experiment to see how people will use the network. It's a great idea to use a wireless network to allow people to be more involved in city government. These large Wi-Fi networks will be used more with useful applications like the city council broadcasts. The announcement isn't online yet but should be up here eventually....

My kind of town.....

My kind of town..... 07/11/2004 10:47 AM

David Weinberger asks....

My wife and I are taking 3 days of vacation in Chicago, starting tomorrow. I've been there many times on business, which means I'm very familiar with the airport and am fully qualified to operate the remote in the hotel rooms, and my wife hasn't been there in 30 years or so.

So, we're going to do the tourist thing. Outside of the obvious, any recommendations? (Three notes: Second City is closed the days we're there, we don't eat meat and we don't much care for the blues.)

[Joho the blog]

I was born and raised in Chi-town Il. Here's a few highlights:
- Watertower = on Michigan Ave.
- Navy Pier = at Navy Pier
- Michigan Ave = the Miracle Mile
- Home of the Blues = Checkboard Lounge
- Ribs = Robinson's
- Italian Beef = Al's Beef (on Harrison, out by U of IL, Chicago Circle campus)
- City Beaches = North Beach
- Zoo = Lincoln Park Zoo
- Museum = the Art Institute of Chicago (I went to school there)
- Grant Park = symphony
- Museum of Natural History = dinosaurs

That aught to keep you bust. I HIGHLY suggest an Al's Beef, hot peppers - with provolone.

Oh yah during the summer, there's KILLER Italian Ice right across the street from Al's - on Harrison. Over 30 flavors - totally uniqiue - like nothing you've had before (even in Venice when you went to dinner with Paolo.)

But Chicago doesn't have black squid ink.

And Maxwell St. is gone.....

And the steel mills.

:-(

Hey here's some research for you! Find out who Cap Streeter is and why it's called Streeterville. He was an early revolutionary who declared a seperate state - maybe it was even a seperate country.

Thne research Mayor Daley and bow your head and pray to the history of poltiics in America. Without Mayor Daley we wouldn't have - Mayor Daley, nepotism and George W.

Oh yah and look up the Chagall Mosaic at 1st National Bank. I videotaped teh unveiling - in 1972. My first editing project.

Around Town: Applelinks

Around Town: Applelinks 12/19/2004 02:51 PM
Applelinks is a Macintosh portal site that covers the news and adds its own opinions, "giving it more flavor and personality." "We feel it's the Mac community that makes us important. We don't see ourselves as a stopping point for Mac users, but as a channel to other Mac sites," Kirk Hiner, senior editor of Applelinks told Spymac. "Our news coverage, reviews, feature columns and even how-tos and such all take this approach: 'Here's what we think, and here's where you can go to determine if you agree or disagree.' This exposes our readers to the wealth of knowledge and opinions within the Mac community, and hopefully increases the readership of the other sites." Applelinks is on Spymac's list of sites in the Around Town Tracker (that can be found on the right side of Spymac). To add Applelinks to your tracking list go to "Options" in the top right corner and then click on the button beside "News Tracks." You'll then be able to select Applelinks by checking the box next to the name (don't forget to press "Submit" after you've checked the box!).
