03/13/2003 10:16 AM1) Key Problems with Movable Type. If you're a Movable Type user then you
probably share a few key experiences with me. To start off with,
you've probably mis-spelt it Moveable Type more than a few
times. You've probably chortled to yourself as you realised your
mistake. How foolish you've been. Ha! The other thing you've probably
done at some point is scratch your head to the point of bleeding about
this whole "Trackback" malarky. I know I have. I know because my
outboard brain tells me so.
2) Solve the Trackback confusion by turning on
'Autodiscovery'. One of the most confusing aspects of the whole
Trackback debacle is this idea that a different URL is used to ping
for trackback than the URL that you use to visit the post itself. This
aspect of the relationship is essentially very simple, but it's quite
hard to explain and so remains essentially incomprehensible to many
web-users. So it's important wherever possible to not draw attention
to this process - in fact to conceal its workings as much as possible.
The best way to do that is by encouraging the use of
autodiscovery. Autodiscovery works like this - when you post
something that includes a link to a trackback-enabled weblog, your
version of Movable Type goes and has a look at the trackback-enabled
weblog's page and tries to find the trackback URL associated with the
thing you're linking to. Then it pings it. Nice and easy. You don't
have to know the trackback URL (which means they don't have to
display the trackback URL anywhere as well). It also means that
there's no clunky manual pinging process. It's all nice and neat and
self-contained and (more importantly) easy to explain to
punters. So why don't you go anc check that autodiscovery is turned on
right now...
3) Trackback manners. In fact, I think there's probably only
one set of circumstances where it's not a good idea to use
auto-discovery, and that's the same set of circumstances when it's not
appropriate to use Trackback at all. As far as I'm concerned there are
at least two of these. Firstly, there's when you don't accept
trackback pings yourself. Frankly, if you're not prepared to maintain
your place in the embedded conversation, then you don't deserve to
participate at all. The other circumstance when you shouldn't enable
Trackback at all is when you're maintaining a pure and commentary-less
link-log - like the side-panels on kottke.org or anil dash. I think it's
important to try and remember what Trackback is for and what
it's not for - it's not supposed to be simply a way for you to
get a link to your site on highly-trafficked weblogs (although clearly
that's what some people use it for). It's supposed to be a way of
maintaining the links between posts in such a way that the thread
of a conversation can be maintained. If you're not contributing to
the conversation in any way, then there's no need for you to use
Trackback. In fact every time you do so, you slightly diminish the
utility of Trackback and the likelihood of people following the links
therein...

Stress Testing: Using Modular Stress
Test to Test Platforms and Components
12/18/2003 12:58 AMModular Stress is a flexible system that performs several different
types of stress testing. It is based on a set of test modules that
each target individual features or components in a platform. The CETK
includes a number of operating system (OS) stress modules that target
major system components (for example, GWES, FileSys, Kernel, and so
on). In addition, the user can create custom modules to target other
platform components. The Modular Stress Test harness controls how
these tests are run, that is, the sort of test environment that is
desired, and collects data on system health throughout the course of a
stress run.

Atom use XML-RPC
Atom use XML-RPC
02/19/2004 11:26 AM
It's fascinating to read the comments on Russell Beattie's post
about the Atom API. His concern is that he won't be able to build a
client that talks to a weblog server through his Java toolkit because
it doesn't allow the HTTP methods the API calls for. Further, he notes
that the spec, which was openly developed, has a restrictive
copyright.
The best answer is obvious, imho, use XML-RPC because it
already has been adapted to and debugged in all the environments where
blogging APIs need to run. By cutting almost to the bottom of the
stack you will have to redo everything that took years to do. I
think it's going to take longer to redo because XML-RPC didn't need to
get any Java toolkits to change, it treaded more softly than the Atom
does.
There's a practical side to protocol and format design that's
missing in the Atom API. The goal is to make it easy for developers to
hop on the bandwagon and get them committed to developing for the
platform. Putting unnecessary hurdles in the way unnecessarily limits
adoption, and virtually guarantees either stagnation or massive
breakage. I can't imagine that either choice is what Google is looking
for.
XML-RPC was designed for what they want to do and it's stood
the test of time. Learn to love the pragmatic, it's how you're going
to win the wars with Yahoo, Microsoft and everyone else who wants to
eat your lunch.

I'm undecided whether or not I'm for this. On the one hand, the

other hand, adding Atom to their semantic web effort could make Atom
even more complex - and simplicity is what makes RSS so great, despite

Sure, it's cheesy, but
there's a surprising amount of potential use to be had from this $20
Boom Boom Box. Four AA batteries power built-in stereo speakers inside
a water-proof casing that even comes with a hanger so you can hook it
on your shower curtain rod or nozzle, turning almost any portable
audio player into a waterproof shower stereo. Put your $500 portable
player inside at your own peril, of course.
And it's not like you have to use it in the shower, either.
There's something to be said for a cheap, hard-plastic case that lets
you share your sound whenever, wherever you want. (Thanks,
Rachel!)
