I'm on sabbatical
I'm on sabbatical
05/21/2004 05:16 PMI've never been one to slow down, let alone stop. When I wrapped up my
work on Kinja in late April, I assumed I'd take a week or two to think
about stuff and then dive back into work: write some articles, hit a
conference or two, and pick up some consulting projects. And of
course, at the same time, I'd be planning what big thing to do next:
start another company or maybe develop a non-profit aimed at getting
blogging into public schools. And the I realized a few things. I was
exhausted and still hadn't shaken a throat infection I've had since
early March. I had no perspective on anything, I was so deep into my
world of weblogs and tech that I didn't have much sense of what was
going on outside of my geek circles. And most importantly and luckily,
I had some savings. I looked at my bank account and realized that
financially there was no reason for me to immediately push into new
projects.
I've been burning my candle at both ends for years now, and decided it
was time to stop. Emotionally I was drained. Physically I was drained.
I might stop for a few weeks, maybe for a few months, I haven't
decided. Part of the plan is to not plan so much, not worry about the
future, to just enjoy the present and experience it. I'm calling it my
sabbatical. I'm going to Nantucket for a while. I may post to this
site a lot, but I may not post at all. I'm going to read and go
running and take pictures and spend time with family. And sleep. And
just be.

05/28/2004 12:18 PMGotten my shellfish permit so I can go clamming.
Made a roaring fire with only one match.
Planted lots of alyssum and petunias.
Eaten many cups of clam chowder, not all at the same time.
Slept with four blankets and still been cold.
Read one Nantucket-based murder mystery which has made me scared at
night.
Set-up my internet connection and downloaded 10,000 emails.
So far, so good.

John Cox's Blog: paFaq Multiple
Vulnerabilities
06/22/2005 02:48 AMJohn Cox has posted a new security issue with the
paFaq FAQ/knowledge base
system from the
PHP
Security Mailing List today.
I have never used paFAQ, and in fact, I had
never heard of the application until today. However, in this security
announcement there is a very good explanation about how a SQL
Injection problem occurs:
The variable $username is taken directly from the submitted login form
and executed in the query, so if magic quotes gpc is off an attacker
can use UNION SELECT to bypass admin authentication!
He also notes that it seems like a lot of developers don't
quite understand what make a SQL injection and why they can be so
dangerous. He recommends this
article from Steve Friedl as a good resource. Also of note, the
response of the paFAQ
developers - none. They didn't respond or issue a new version on their
site (or even an announcement, for that matter). Definitely the wrong
way to handle it...

cool ideas and strongly wedded to an occasional not rolling regular
release model. ... X has to evolve, X has to do cool stuff, X has to
let people break stuff, X has to delegate trust to driver maintainers
far more. ... As a driver maintainer X is a painful project, not
because of the code ... but because of the project structure and lack
of delegation."

Alan Reiter on MSN watches: they will
suck
01/23/2004 02:20 PMDo those MSN SPOT watches stand a chance? Mobile data pundit Alan
Reiter says (
this) (
and this),
summarized by BB reader John Troyer:
- They're big and ugly
- They need to be recharged daily
- They crash and sometimes die when shocked with static
electricity
- They have to be turned off on planes
- Coverage is spotty compared to pagers and mobile phones
- News blurbs are 25-word useless snippets
- You have to tell MSN when and where you are traveling for it to
work away from your home area!
- Nobody's *ever* made money selling generic headlines, weather and
sports via wireless.
Reiter also says:
"However, syncing with MS Outlook is useful, and Reiter
does believe they could catch on if Microsoft repositions to emphasize
the fun aspects: downloadable watch faces, games, etc. ... [The
watches] look as if they were designed by the Borg, on a very bad day.
Many years ago Motorola introduced its first pager watch, I was there.
I was pretty excited about the product. But when I spoke with a
Motorola executive, he said the company wasn't sure whether the target
market would view the device as a smallest, sexiest pager or as the
world's ugliest watch. Unfortunately for Motorola, the view was the
latter. Pager watches have generally died quick or lingering deaths.
But the operative word is "death."

Alan Moore on our modern distopia
07/22/2004 02:31 AMSalon has an excellent interview with Alan Moore, the man behind
Watchmen, From Hell and other canonically awesome funnybooks. Moore
talks distopian politics:
One of the reasons we singled out media in "V for Vendetta" was
because it is one of the most useful tools of tyranny. We invite it
into our own home every night; I'm sure that some of us think of it as
a friend. That might be a horrifying notion but I'm sure there are
people who think of television as perhaps one of their most intimate
friends. And if the TV tells them that things in the world are a
certain way, even if the evidence of their senses asserts it is not
true, they'll probably believe the television set in the end. It's an
alarming thought but we brought it upon ourselves. I mean, I think
that television is one of the most diabolical -- in the very best
sense of the word -- inventions of the past century. It has probably
done more to degrade the mind and intelligence of its audience, even
if they happen to be drug addicts or alcoholics; I would think that
watching television has done more to limit their horizons in the long
run. And it has also distorted our culture.
TV and politics have always made inevitable bedfellows, but the
results have been disastrous. Look at the situation we have now. Let's
say that tomorrow someone who is a political genius were to emerge --
and I'm not expecting this to happen, but say that it did. Say that a
politician emerged who seemed, for once, basically competent, who
seemed to be able to do their job as well as the average cab driver,
comic writer or journalist. If they were the most intelligent,
visionary, humane political thinker in the history of mankind, but
were also fat, had some sort of blemish or something that made them
less than telegenic, we would not be able to elect them. All we're
able to elect are these telegenic, photogenic crypto-Nazis. As long as
they look good. I suppose it's too early to go into my rant on Ronald
Reagan? That would be tasteless.
