Network-Enabled Projectors

Network-Enabled Projectors 06/27/2004 04:49 AM

BOXLIGHT - Presentation Articles: I saw an ad for some of these in an in-flight magazine. Having a projector on the network lets you apparently connect to it and debug it remotely. But the really cool thing is --

Some [network-enabled projectors] also have the ability to access and deliver content (documents, spreadsheets, and presentations) from a computer on the network directly to the projector.

[...] this would allow any files stored on the server to be displayed on the projector and controlled by any computer on the network, including laptops and PDAs.

The Queen's GPS-Enabled Baton 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

queens_baton.jpgThe Commonwealth Games baton started its trek today with the ceremonious passing from the Queen to Elle MacPherson. Looking rather cobraesque, this year marks the first that the baton includes a GPS device and two miniature cameras, allowing people to watch what has to be is most definitely a completely disorienting jaunt of a video. Still, the idea is cool and a fun use of the technology, as the article claims. (Thanks, Russell!)

gps_uniforms_sorta.jpgJapanese school uniform maker Ogo-Sangyo Company has released their newest advancement in uniform technology: GPS-enabled blazers. The GPS terminals, located inside the uniforms, can communicate back to parents (or potential kidnappers, naturally) the location of their children, allowing them to know exactly how many stops at the okashiya they made on their way home. The terminals are built by Secom, whose GPS devices showed up in similarly-intended GPS satchels.

iPot: Internet-Enabled Hotpot 04/11/2005 08:18 AM

ipot_pot.jpgThe Zojurushi Corporation has developed the first Internet-Enabled Hot Pot. The i-Pot monitors its usage statistics and sends them off wirelessly (802.11x, presumably), allowing other parties to monitor your tea-drinking habits with bated breath. The marketed application for the i-Pot rests largely with the elderly—if your obaasan misses her regular tea break, the i-Pot can send a message to someone so they can check up on her. As the product page says, "The electric pot becomes the barometer of vigor." Available for roughly $50 in Japan, with a one month trial option available.

Fully Wi-Fi Enabled Grade School

Fully Wi-Fi Enabled Grade School 11/18/2003 09:05 PM
While parents of some students in Illinois schools are concerned about potential health affects of Wi-Fi, one school in New York requires every kid to have a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop: Students use the laptops in every class and Columbia University is studying how the program works. I’ll be interested to see how laptops are eventually used throughout the school system. Teachers at this New York school rave about the additional skills they can teach kids because of the laptops but also note the added distractions in games and the Internet. It must be difficult to control how the computers are used during class....

Telepathy-enabled Quantum Minds

Telepathy-enabled Quantum Minds 08/31/2004 06:40 PM
Ben Goertzel of the Artificial General Intelligence Research Institute (AGIRI) has released a new essay titled, Kinds of Minds . In it he expounds on different types of minds, which he defines as "patterns associated with intelligent systems". Beyond defining the term, he proposes a number of mind types including singly embodied (one mind per brain like humans have) vs multiply embodied (one mind spread across the brains of multiple robots). His mind ontology expands from there to include ideas seemingly drawn from Science Fiction. He suggests telepathy-enabled minds and a "mindplex" which is a sort of meta-mind composed of many smaller, individual minds. He also touches briefly on the issue of whether or not consciousness is quantum-based and therefore not possible for machine intelligence. Ben concludes with the claim that he's building a telepathy-enabled mind of his own called the Novamente AI Engine. Sorry, no details on how the telepathy works but you can read a general overview of the system's architecture in this IJCAI paper (PDF format).

We've integrated a utility that lets you generate Creative Commons licenses for your site. A Creative Commons License is an excellent alternative to default copyright, and lets you retain very specific rights over the works you place on your website. The process for generating a license is one step, and free. Takes about 30 seconds. We recommend giving them a look!

Robot Origami

Robot Origami 05/25/2004 11:37 AM
ORIGAMI_4New Scientist reports on the graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University we've linked to previously who built a robot that can make simple origami constructions. The work is aimed at developing robotic systems that can manipulate various materials encountered in daily life. From researcher Devin Balkcom's site:
"Why origami?  Origami is a fresh challenge for the field of robotic manipulation.  Paper is flexible; robots are best at manipulating rigid things.  Even if we model origami as an articulated rigid body (by building our origami out of really stiff cardboard with hinges along creases), it still has a complicated mechanical structure."  Link

Origami Folding Robot

Origami Folding Robot 12/15/2003 06:55 PM
Devin Balkcom and Matt Mason, working at the CMU Robotics Institute have created the world's first origami folding robot. The robot can fold a variety of traditional origami shapes. While the shapes are simple, the interesting part is that the robot determines the sequences of moves and folds needed on its own. What have they learned from the exercise? "For now, human hardware and software are superior: human fingers are great tools for manipulating delicate paper, and human intuition and intellect far outclass robotic planning capabilities." Devin's website includes a Quicktime video of the robot in action.
