The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PM
Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin, both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own, but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"), and considering just how lucrative that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you have virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has announced plans to sell pre-paid mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though, all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up again - back at the store, of course.

The Mall

The Mall 07/09/2004 03:22 PM

Most folks, when they say “let’s go to the mall,” they mean the local mall—it’s just The Mall, it doesn’t need a name.

And many folks remember The Mall from their teenage years forever. Every mall later on is viewed through the filter of that First Mall, the Ur-Mall.

For me that mall was the Christiana Mall in Delaware. MacNN reports that they’re getting an Apple store. I haven’t been there in almost 20 years, but for some reason this made me glad.

We used to walk around The Mall talking out loud about rats, hoping to spook the other shoppers. People gave us funny looks but we never managed to cause a stampede.

With the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian in DC next week, the National Mall is now officially full, the usable space intended for museums, monuments and other important national sites have been taken. Chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission, John V. Cogbill III, tells the post that the Mall is "[d]one. We consider the Mall a finished work of civic art."

The Father of the Shopping Mall

The Father of the Shopping Mall 12/24/2003 12:10 PM
The Father of the Shopping Mall "His most remarkable innovation--unveiled in Edina, Minn., in 1956--was the first enclosed shopping mall, a climate-controlled community of retailing under a single vast canopy. But it was intended to be more than just a place to shop. It was to provide a center to otherwise centerless developments, offering community, entertainment and even enlightenment. Gruen lamented that Americans, at the time, were living 'detached lives in detached houses.' With his shopping-center designs, Mr. Hardwick writes, 'Gruen hoped to offer a corrective to this grim and soulless American environment.' "

Dress code at the mall

Dress code at the mall 08/27/2004 01:46 PM
David Pescovitz: The conservatown that spawned me--Cincinnati, Ohio--now boasts a mall with a dress code. Rent-a-cops at Cincinnati Mills mall hand out yellow code of conduct slips to those violating behavior and, amazingly, clothing policies. For example, Miami University sophomore Donnie Jefferson was "cited" two different times for sporting a sideways baseball cap. On another occasion, he says, a group of his friends who were wearing white t-shirts and jeans were escorted out. Hmmm... I wonder if it's because Donnie and his pals happen to black. No, it couldn't possibly be that. Not a chance.
"We have to be consistent across the board with the cap issue... There are, unfortunately in these days and times, groups that would mistake that as a different message and we don't want that," Jim Childress, Cincinnati Mills general manager, told WCPO. "In our business a customer is a customer. There is no distinction among age, religion, ethnic background."
I'd love to send a middle-aged white guy in there rocking a sideways Reds cap and see how he's treated. Link (Thanks, C-Lo, my Censornati homeboy!)

Oregon Mall Goes Wireless

Oregon Mall Goes Wireless 02/18/2004 01:17 PM
Cedar Hills Crossing, a mall in Beaverton, Ore., is now covered by Wi-Fi: Access is free to visitors and the network is co-sponsored by Personal Telco. Without interesting applications for visitors, I'm not sure how useful this network will be. I don't often carry my laptop with me when I'm shopping. There is a restaurant here that's covered, however. Plus, this would be a good place for customers to use services that let them scan bar codes and compare products and prices. Best Buy, Borders, and Office Depot are in this mall so those stores might be able to think up some useful applications for the network. The University Village and Bellevue Square malls in the Seattle area, both somewhat upscale places, have full coverage with Cometa. But they also have individual coverage (free and fee) in individual properties throughout. It's unclear whether those two malls have seen any change in visitors or usage -- they haven't discussed it, and they may not even be able to track it....

Free Mall Wi-Fi on the Rise 04/30/2004 12:30 AM
Taubman Centers, major mall operator, adds free Wi-Fi to Virginia mall; sign of things to come: The reporter did his homework, and this isn't a unique installation. We know from this article that there are 1,130 malls in the U.S. with only a tiny fraction having Wi-Fi. (Two are in the Seattle area, University Village and Bellevue Square, operated for fee by Cometa Networks.) But 100 malls operated by either Westfield America Trust and Taubman may have free Wi-Fi added, with Westfield strongly committed....

Greetings from a dynamic shopping mall

Greetings from a dynamic shopping mall 05/29/2004 03:07 PM

the exciting Forum

I've always seen collections of boring postcards but always wondered where people found such random tributes to a humble gas station or burger joint. A few days ago I found this deliciously boring postcard of the Forum shopping mall in Helsinki which is described as "The dynamic, continental shopping centre in the heart of Helsinki." Wow, what's a dynamic shopping centre?! Who would send this postcard to someone and what would they say?

Darling Veronica,

Salutations from Helsinki! The shopping center is nothing like Palm Beach but they have a food court with two McDonalds! They have this shop, Merimekko, that is just like Lilly only with a bit more of the kitchen curtain appeal! They have electricity, plumbing, and FedEx! Can you believe it? I always thought Russia was filled with a bunch of people living in yurts or something and riding reindeer! What a scream! Those Japanese wireless Nokia phones sure seem popular around here, too, as everyone seems to be talking into them. Can't understand a single word they're saying though. Nothing seems to be open all night, except for the sunshine [no tanning rays :(], so we have to run and go find something to eat before everything closes. The cruise ship heads for Stockholm tomorrow, bork! bork! bork! Love to Mopsie!

XXXOOO Boopsie and Trip

The Legend of Dixie Square Mall

The Legend of Dixie Square Mall 04/19/2005 03:47 AM
Dixie Square Mall , in the mostly-blighted "inner ring" Chicago suburb of Harvey, Illinois, opened in 1966. It suffered gradual decline, until it closed in 1978. A year later, film crews gave the mall a brief makeover and Jake and Elwood Blues drove through the place. Then, nothing. For 20-plus years, the mall sat and decayed. Renovation plans (even a planned baseball stadium for the White Sox) were popular over the years, but never panned out. In 1993, a rape and murder took place in the JC Penney's space. From space, the mall looks beat up. From the ground, it looks even worse . Human fascination with deserted space has borne a number of websites< /a> and spelunking trips (along with some excellent then-and-now comparisons ), and a documentary is apparently in the works. Finally, at long last, there 's renewed hope for the site. Previously seen here and here.

Free mall WiFi on the rise

Free mall WiFi on the rise 04/30/2004 02:11 AM
Shopping malls across the US are adding free WiFi:
A very small number of the 1,130 malls in the United States have wireless access. But, she said, an increasing number are thinking of installing the capability.

For instance, Westfield America Trust said most of its 62 regional and super regional shopping centers will soon offer the service. Taubman, which owns or manages 31 malls, began offering Wi-Fi services yesterday at its The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano, Texas.

"If you look at malls in general, you are really seeing owners bring in things that allow for more people to come do a variety of things at the center," Duker said. "The mall has become more than a place to shop."

Strip Mall Land = Comforting

Strip Mall Land = Comforting 03/19/2005 02:47 AM

Turning off New Jersey Route 17 toward my cousin's house in Allendale it occurred to me that maybe opponents of sprawl and strip malls are overlooking one bright spot.  There is something comforting about driving down Route 17 or the Rockville Pike in Maryland.  You know that if you have a car and a credit card you'll be able to get everything that you might conceivably ever need and, after all, isn't that what American life is all about?
