Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

Sony May Be Forced to Stop Selling
Playstations (But Probably Not)
03/28/2005 10:29 AM

ps2_cent.jpgDorky brother Kotaku explains how Sony Computer Entertainment company can still sell PS2s and controllers, despite an initial $90 million court order and injunction in favor of Immersion, who claims to have invented vibrating controllers. Until the appeals process is finished, Sony can continue to sell Playstations. I have a funny feeling that deep-pocketed Sony will get through this fine, but just in case they should start coming up with some new ideas to stockpile against a lean future.

Sony Loses Patent Battle -- Told To Stop

Sony Loses Patent Battle -- Told To Stop
Selling PlayStations In The US
03/28/2005 06:00 AM
If you're familiar with the word "haptics," you're familiar with the company Immersion. They're the company that seems to own every possible patent having to do with the haptics space, and any kind of tactile response or force feedback device usually involves patents that were first licensed from the company. So, in some ways, it's pretty impressive that Sony has gotten as far as it has apparently without licensing patents from the company. A court has found, however, that Sony's force feedback controllers for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 violate Immersion's patents and not only have they ordered the company to pay $90 million in damages, but also told Sony it can no longer sell either console in the US. Sony, of course, will appeal the ruling, which will allow them to keep selling the consoles in the meantime. Of course, this is the same Sony that keeps insisting on the importance of stricter intellectual property enforcement to teach violators a lesson. Funny what comes back to bite you...

Previously, the book was only available directly through Kellerman's site www.frontbackbooks.com but now, through Amazon, the book should reach a larger audience and make it's way to the shelves of more hobby reference libraries!

Amazon Book Search Boosting Sales So Far

Amazon Book Search Boosting Sales So Far 10/31/2003 01:39 AM
Amazon today was excited to announce that in the first week of their full-text book searching service, books in the service sold 9% better than those not in the search. While I do think the service is great, and I'm sure it will boost sales, I'm not sure these numbers mean anything. There was definitely a big boost in usage of this service due to the ton of publicity it received. So, let's see how it's doing a few months down the road, and then it might be worth talking about. In the meantime, various authors are sti ll complaining about the service. They quote an author of a travel book who is worried that readers only want a couple of sections and would print those out and never buy the book. I guess he hasn't been ot the library lately. If people just need a couple pages out of his book, they're not going to buy the book anyway.
