It doesn't have a built-in camera (there will be a camera accessory), but if that's OK by you, the Philips 650 has a 8.5 talk/5 week standby battery. The tri-band phone has a 16-bit 128x160 screen, a WAP 2.0 browser, Java, and external Caller ID.

No announcements as to which carriers will have the phone nor how much it will cost. Look for it in the fall.

Philips 755 Scribble Phone 09/16/2004 10:49 AM

philips_755_1.jpg imageThe last time I saw something like this I think I made fun of it for some reason, but I'm going to 180 and say this Philips 755 "Scribble Phone" looks like it would be amusing for at least a few minutes. Its touchscreen lets you draw little messages with a stylus and send them out as images over MMS. Could you do this with any touchscreen PDA? Yes, probably. It's not about the functionality itself, really, just the integration of fun little software tricks into a phone that Just Work.

You can scribble on pictures you take with its integrated camera, too.

Philips Senseo Coffee Pod Review

Philips Senseo Coffee Pod Review 06/16/2004 08:34 AM

senseo_008_thumb.jpg imageGadgetMadness reviews the Philips Senseo coffee maker, the other single-serving coffee machine available in the states that uses those quick clean-up coffee pods. They basically flip for it, even going so far as to test the temperature with a laser thermometer, and swearing off Red Bull and Monster for, well, a while. At $70, it's not cheap (basic, conventional drip machines can be had for around $10 at most stores), plus you're locked into buying the pods. Still, it's less clean-up than a french press (which I now use, but I work from home), plus you don't have to slurp hours-old coffee all day (although I have to admit, nothing says mind-numbing automaton like eighth-hour Folgers).

Philips ProntoPro NG, PronoNeo Reviewed

Philips ProntoPro NG, PronoNeo Reviewed 09/02/2004 08:03 AM

02remo.184.jpg imageThis lighthearted, if epic review of the ProntoPro NG and ProntoNeo remotes from Philips does a lot to illustrate why these $1,000 remotes too often miss the point. Although they are super-powerful, their need to be massaged and tweaked to achieve any semblance of usability makes them a tool more suited for hacker-types, who probably would be more inclined to rig something up themselves from spare parts or computers or something, instead of the "I just want it to work," crowd who can afford to toss off a grand for something that might do the job for them. The user groups sound fun, though, where groups of like-minded Pronto fans get together share tips and stories about configuring their super-remotes. I bet the elation one must feel when actually getting a macro to work - like turning on the DVD player, TV, and dimming the lights with one button push - must be pretty amazing.

Me, I just click "Play," usually.

Philips Over the Counter Defibrillator
Approved
09/16/2004 05:03 PM

040916_defib_hmed.jpg imageThe FDA has approved an over-the-counter home defibrillator from Philips for use in emergancy (or kinky sexual) situations.

When the shock is delivered within five minutes of the sudden cardiac arrest, 50 percent of individuals survive, said Deborah DiSanzo, vice president and general manager of cardiac resuscitation at Philips Medical Systems, manufacturer of the device.

Ambulances typically arrive within nine minutes of a 911 call. Ten minutes after the sudden cardiac arrest, the patient has a 1 percent chance of survival, she said

On the off chance you think you need one, though, be ready to pony up a heart stopping amount of cash - around $2,000. And why do we even have a Home Entertainment category? Is it just to tempt me on posts like these?

Philips Vision for Connected Home

Philips Vision for Connected Home 01/09/2004 09:52 PM
The buzz at CES must be all about wirelessly connecting home electronics because there is lots of talk on the subject this week: Philips is touting its connected home concept, which revolves around the iPronto, a universal remote, or the DesXcape, which sounds like a Tablet PC. The portable devices let users control all connected products in the home. Philips envisions users accessing content from the Internet or a PC to listen to a Web-based music station in one room, watch a movie trailer or music video in another room and check out pictures on a TV elsewhere. While Philips touts a package of products that makes such a scenario easy to set up and use, it will take some time to develop products that will be truly easy enough for the mass market....
