Google AdSense 02/01/2005 09:42 PM

As some of you that physically visit the site versus pulling the info from a Aggregator can see we have added Google AdSense ads to the website. This is to help me cover rising hosting cost, and also to pay for some of the major improvements to the site design that are being tested on prototype website. We will be rolling out Geek News Central Version 2.0 in the near future.

We want to continue to thank each and one of you for having Geek News Central on your reading list.

I was contacted by Google which saved me having to go through the approval process and we want to thank Jonas for getting us setup. I will be playing with the ad placement over the next few weeks.

Last week Robert McLaws started placing Google Adsense Ads in the LonghornBlogs RSS Feed. Google Launch AdSense for Bloggers

Google Launch AdSense for Bloggers 08/27/2004 01:56 PM
Google's popular AdSense advertising service is now being opened up to Bloggers, as well as main stream websites. Announced via Blogger (a Google subsidiary), Bloggers will now be able to gain revenue from their online web logs.

AdSense has been a major stream of revenue for Google. Offering non-intrusive text (and now image) based adverts, content publishers (like this site) have found them more preferable to more traditional forms of adverts. Previously, the service had been limited specifically to non-blog sites. Although launched via Blogger, the service will not be limited to blogs at Blogger.com - Google will be offering the service to all.

The blog post announcing the launch gave a clear warning to would be fraudsters. "Have you ever seen those signs people post near swimming pools to prevent a few misbehaving kids from messing up everyone's fun? Yeah, well we're putting up a sign too: "Welcome To BlogSense, No Fraud Please... We want everyone to have a fair shot at blogging for dollars."

Opening the service up to bloggers is a smart move for Google. Primarily because it’ll give AdSense much more clout; first, because they are the first to do this, and second, because of the massive potential increase in advertising space Google will be able command. However, Google will have to content with some serious issues. Most critically, the massive potential for abuse. They'll have to work a lot harder than before to keep fraudsters from being rewarded by the system. Google have laid down some clear rules that they expect bloggers to follow if they want to stay on the AdSense (BlogSense?) program. Whether they'll be successful is open to speculation.

http://www.articlesforeduc ators.com/

Articles For Educators is a free resource offered by Virtu Software. On this website, teachers will find lesson plans, field trip ideas, tips and tricks for the classroom written by educators. Visitors can browse the directory of articles by subject or search for a specific topic. This section highlights Mathematics lesson plans written by math teachers and is organized into the following main sections: Competition, Fun with Numbers, and Miscellaneous. Membership, which is free, provides educators access to post articles, comment on other articles, or discuss subjects in the community forum. The website does include a few advertisements, but they do not overwhelm the website and its creator, a software developer who is also active in Christian ministry, also includes several Christian education links. This will be added to Education and Distance Learning Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2005. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

Wikipedia : 1 Million Articles

Wikipedia : 1 Million Articles 09/20/2004 07:07 PM
News gurus The Inquirer note that online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, has now over a million pages of content.

Formed just under 3 years ago, the site has exploded in content and usefulness. With just 200,000 pages as of January this year, over the last 9 months they've seen a five fold increase and a few server pains to boot. It's unique method of content creation has also been key to it's success. Users submit data and build up subjects, often with startling levels of detail. Data can then be edited / updated by other users as time goes on, keeping content fresh and up to date.

Although the site has enjoyed much success in the technology community due to it's free / GPL friendly nature, traditional educational establishments have been urged not to use the site, with some groups suggesting that it is "un-authoritative". Indeed, one techie went on to test exactly how good Wikipedia users were at weeding out false information: the results were poor, with none of the changes being noticed.

Sadly, although Wikipedia list a reference for The Inquirer, the site doesn't feature yours truly - Neowin. A page placed on the site today was hours later marked for deletion; better check it soon, as it might not be there tomorrow.

Wikipedia breaks 10^6 articles

Wikipedia breaks 10^6 articles 09/20/2004 02:41 AM
Cory Doctorow: The free/open Wikipedia encyclopedia project just posted its 1,000,000th article.
The Wikimedia Foundation announced today the creation of the one millionth article in Wikipedia, its project to create a free, open-content, online encyclopedia (Wikipedia.org (http://en.wikipedia.org)). Started in January 2001, Wikipedia is currently both the world's largest encyclopedia and its fastest-growing, with articles under active development in over 100 languages. Nearly 2,500 new articles are added to Wikipedia each day, along with ten times that number of updates to existing articles.
