Want a job? Move to Washington, DC
area.
04/09/2004 04:11 PM

According to this Washington Post article, the unemployment rate in the DC area is the lowest in the nation.  In the well-educated Maryland and Virginia suburbs unemployment is between 1.6 and 2.2 percent, ridiculously low compared to the national average of 6.6 percent.  Best of all the standards for working hours and difficulty are set by the federal government.  A doctor I talked to said that she went to work for the Food and Drug Administration:  "It felt like a 2-year vacation compared to working in a private practice.  The funniest part was that the people who worked there complained about how hard their jobs were."

InfinityClimberKevin Jarnot sez: "Little Tikes Commercial has created a playground structure called the "Infinity Climber", which is a climbable Moebius double twist strip for kids. It also recently won a 2004 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA)" Link

Cassidy Curtis sez: "I hate to break it to your readers, but that piece of playground equipment is not really a Moebius strip. It has two twists, not one, which means it's an orientable surface (having two unique sides), topologically equivalent to an ordinary circular strip. A kid on one side of the strip could crawl around forever and not meet any kids on the other side. Real Moebius strips have an odd number of twists, and thus have only one side."

Unnatural Selection

Unnatural Selection 02/01/2005 10:05 PM
An MIT Technology Review article offers a good introduction to the use of evolutionary algorithms for hardware design. By replacing natural selection with a user-defined fitness function genetic algorithms use random mutation and recombination of the most fit designs to produce continually better designs. The article includes plenty of real-world examples of the results including "a corkscrew contraption small enough to fit in a wine glass, yet able to send a wide-beam radio wave from space to Earth. It resembles nothing any sane radio engineer would build on her own." The article also touches on John von Neumann's "complexity barrier" and the origins of genetic algorithms in the 1950s.

Selection Bug Fixed

On the GUI Selection in UserLinux

On the GUI Selection in UserLinux 12/15/2003 08:04 PM
In the original UserLinux white paper, I made it clear that the project would play favorites among the software choices available to it, and that the resulting process would be painful. You can't say that you weren't warned. But it turns out not to be particularly painful, except for one issue: the selection of the GUI used in the system. The selection of GNOME as the GUI of the UserLinux project has raised a good deal of opposition from KDE supporters.

AppleScript FAQ: String, Text, Unicode
Text
12/17/2004 06:30 PM
A string is a bunch of characters of the ASCII table (including extended ASCII, that is, all the 256 characters). text is the same. styled text is a string containing information about the standard styles: on styles (that is plain, bold, italic, underline, outline, shadow, condensed, expanded), font id, size, color, etc. Unicode text is supossed to contain any character in the known languages (latin, japanese, etc.). The information is kept in two bytes. If you are thinking in a multi-language solution in your script, you may use this kind of text as your standard.

Xoxide and Link Selection

Xoxide and Link Selection 07/01/2004 03:56 PM

Xoxide: So, here's our first LinkWorth advertiser, and the process of getting this one up was eye-opening.

At the risk of sounding like a shill, approving this link was kind of a no-brainer. Click around their store for a while and you'll see what I mean — I was like a kid in a candy store here. I'm not a case modder at all, but they have some insanely cool stuff for sale.

I have two other links pending, which I'm trying to evalulate right now. The questions I'm asking myself are (1) are there any reasons I shouldn't link to them? Do they have crappy service? Are they deceptive in anyway? Are a lot of people ranting about how they suck?

And (2), is there any reason I really should link to them? Are they cool in some way? If I weren't getting paid, would I make a blog entry about them? (With Xoxide, I think I can answer "yes" to that question, given the stuff Joe pointed out over there.)

This is the harder question, because I have a pending link that isn't objectionable in any way, but it's just....well, kind of blah. It's an example of someone trying to force a business model that's probably not going to happen. I'm not sure it really adds any value to the Internet as a whole.

(Another question: why don't I get this uptight about the Google ads? Probably because I have no control over them. I have plausible deniability there. With LinkWorth, however, I'm proactively making the decision to include the link, and that's a little harder.)

Am I being naive here? Is the hope of accepting paid links —but only good paid links — at all realistic? I don't know, but stay tuned and I'll keep you informed about how it works out.
