The Digital Divide

The Digital Divide 12/12/2002 12:27 AM
MediaSavvy nails the "digital divide" I don't know who came up with the phrase "Digital Divide", but it's brilliant. It (unintentionally) redirects us from the growing divide between the rich and the poor in this country. Should we focus on...

It would be better for consumers if Apple began licensing its digital rights management software, only because the iTunes Music Store will not be able to lock up access to all the copyrighted music in the world. Digital Divide Among Kids Is Shrinking

Digital Divide Among Kids Is Shrinking 09/17/2004 11:55 AM
For all the talk about the "digital divide" and how poorer kids weren't getting access to the internet that would be important to their ability to get jobs in the future, it looks like much of the problem is going away. Nearly all children in the US now have some form of internet access, though, there still are differences in how they access it. It shouldn't be much of a surprise to find out that wealthier families are more likely to have internet access at home for their kids. Either way, this is clearly a positive step.

International Digital Divide Narrowing
Quickly

It seems that every other week a report comes out saying that the digital divide is a problem, followed the next week by a study saying that the digital divide isn't a problem or is going away. This must be the second week. The UN has put out a report saying that the digital divide among nations is decreasing much faster than anyone anticipated. While there are still gaps, the study found that, even in many very poor nations, people did have access to things like a telephone, if they needed to use it. Still, that doesn't mean the people are actually using the technology, but it does suggest that the problem isn't one of getting infrastructure built.

China Gets Wired... But Digital Divide
Exists

China Gets Wired... But Digital Divide
Exists
07/21/2004 02:54 AM
The internet is growing in China, as they now have 87 million people online, though they are apparently connecting through just 36.3 million internet connected computers. The number of Chinese netizens puts them firmly in second place, though just about everyone expects them to take first place before long. That 87 million represents just 6.6% of the population, which may point to a bigger issue. While the US worries about the "digital divide," it looks like a much bigger issue in China. Internet usage is much more common in more developed areas, and many seem worried that less developed areas will get left even further behind. While the Chinese government has tried to go online, the study found that most such sites are unused, and many government officials prefer not to use their own websites. None of this is particularly surprising, but it's still interesting to see the data.

Report on digital repository
interoperability
09/01/2004 11:21 AM

The Digital Library Federation has published a study group's report on how the growing number of digital repositories interoperate. The group found that the variety of applications, content, and users has created enormous complexity, which requires collaborative solutions in order to facilitate communication between, and access to these increasingly popular tools. Additionally, the higher education landscape was extremely diverse, "even within single institutions":

The work involved in identifying where to look for resources, dealing with multiple system interfaces and varied search functionality, and incorporating heterogeneous metadata and objects into a local environment is enormously complex and rather daunting. The utility of a tool to simplify those tasks is obvious. Many sources, many interfaces, many digital formats are a given in our rich digital environment. Mitigating that complexity and diversity will certainly encourage and enable more instructors to make use of existing resources in their teaching.
The group considered a group of leading repositories, including ARTstor , the California Digital Library , D-space , and Fedora . It recommends developing demonstration cases of interoperability, along with considering reusable objects within repositories.

The report was supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation .
