Sony's PSX sells out in Japan 12/19/2003 11:54 AM

The haters (by which I mean analysts), dubbed the PSX a "publicity stunt" and predicted that it wouldn't sell well, but that didn't stop Sony's...

Sony's 3 CCD HDV HDR-FX1 Camcorder 09/07/2004 06:47 AM

sony-hdr-fx1-big-1.jpg imageSony's new 3 CCD HDV camcorder, the HDR-FX1, has been formally introduced by the company after an initial preview at this year's CeBit. What makes it so special? Well, along with a host of other interesting features, the FX1 has the ability to capture video in 1080i at 60 interlaced frames per second. Add into that a projected street price of only around $3,500 and the FX1 becomes a pretty amazing piece of gear, and definitely one that will get most prosumer and semi-pro film makers all hot and bothered. The FX1 should be available in November, and a hands-on with the press is expected tomorrow (so expect to see more news). (Thanks, David!)

Sony's $60 iPod? No way

Sony's $60 iPod? No way 11/06/2003 01:54 AM
The Register echoes our skepticism about Sony's announcement that they're planning a $60 MP3 player to compete with the iPod:Sony hasn't said that its $60 music player will feature a high capacity hard drive as the iPod does - or is as compact as the Apple machine. Hard drive prices are falling, it's true, but ultra-compact, high capacity models are still pretty expensive, and eat up much of the cost of manufacturing a hard drive-based music player. We've no doubt that Sony will offer such a device of its own, but the $60 model isn't it. That's less than half the price of a typical 128MB solid-state MP3 player, for heaven's sake. What Sony is probably planning is some sort of barebones player that can have a hard drive attached to it or something like that....

I guess that Pocket Bit Pro 2GB USB hard drive wasn't the only USB device announced by Sony today, although the rest are these Yet Another Flash Drives, which Sony has updated across the line. The Pocket Bit U-Mini D (USM-D) are 30 percent smaller than previous models in sizes up to 256MB. The USM-F include a fingerprint sensor for security, although it only comes in a 128MB flavor. The USB-BMS is a 128MB model that includes a Memory Stick PRO slot, which would make it a bit more handy than just a generic Memory Stick PRO reader, if that's the flash memory format you're locked into you've chosen. And finally, the USM-E, which isn't really that special except that it's the largest of them all, capacity-wise, at 512MB.

FastMac announces April Fools “No
Fooling” sale
04/01/2005 05:15 PM
FastMac is cutting prices on all items for its 3-Day April Fools “No Fooling” Sale from Friday, April 1st to Sunday, April 3rd. The sale includes FastMac’s G4 processor upgrades for G3 and G4 PowerMacs and 16X Dual-Layer SuperDrives, both starting at $99.95. “We’re excited to be the first to offer a G4 upgrade for under $100” says Michael Lowdermilk, Business Development Manager for FastMac Performance Upgrades. “This sale is our way of giving those who’ve put off upgrading one less excuse.” For $99.95, Lowdermilk says the FastMac ZIF processor upgrade replaces the original CPU in a Beige or Blue & White PowerMac G3 with a G4 CPU operating at up to 500 MHz. It also doubles the backside cache from 512k to 1 full MB, resulting in a 3 to 4 times boost in speed & performance. Optical drives start at $99.95 for a 16X Dual-Layer SuperDrive upgrade for PowerMacs. Other drives are available for multiple models including: PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs, Cubes, and Mac minis. Lowdermilk says all FastMac processor upgrades are 100% compatible with OS 9 and X and take full advantage of the G4 AltiVec Velocity Engine. AGP processor upgrades carry a three year warranty and ZIF and optical drive upgrades carry a one year warranty. All products come with a 30 day money back guarantee, he says.

Google Gulps Down April Fools, Wikipedia

04/01/2005 03:52 AM
Unlike the GMail storage increase, Google Gulp is one of the first big April Fools jokes floating around the internet this year:

"At Google our mission is to organize the world's information and make it useful and accessible to our users. But any piece of information's usefulness derives, to a depressing degree, from the cognitive ability of the user who's using it. That's why we're pleased to announce Google Gulp (BETA)™ with Auto-Drink™ (LIMITED RELEASE), a line of "smart drinks" designed to maximize your surfing efficiency by making you more intelligent, and less thirsty."

Looks as though Wikipedia has been bought by Encyclopedia Britannica...

"On April 1, 2005, Encyclopædia Britannica - The Free Encyclopædia announced its immediate semi-hostile takeover of the Wikimedia Foundation and all of its projects (now to be called Britannican reference subdivisions), including Wikipedia (now called Wikipædia)"

Generation April Fools Gags

Study Details Problems With Next
Generation April Fools Gags
04/01/2005 05:04 PM
There are what appears to be an even higher than normal set of ridiculous April Fool's gags out there today. While we do our best to avoid them (while chuckling here or there), the folks over at MobilePipeline deserve extra credit for not just coming up with an original April Fool's gag, but mocking the whole concept... all in one! Yes, it's a study on the steep growth curve associated with next generation April Fool's gags, predicting an ongoing "increase at a compounded annual rate of 22 percent through 2009." However, at the same time, they're noting that, with this rapid growth there has been a marked decline in quality -- which the industry needs to watch out for: "Vendors must embrace the fact that market penetration occurs not because of the quantity of the gags but because of the quality." Meanwhile, as all of these analysts like to do, they try to dig deeper into the meaning behind such a trend: "The dramatic increase in April Fools gags indicates a vibrant technology sector that, perhaps, has too much time on its hands." Indeed.
