Connolly 100 updated

Connolly 100 updated 09/17/2004 12:30 PM
100 key books “Cyril Connolly chose 100 key books from England, France and America first published between 1880 and 1950 to represent ‘The Modern Movement’.”

This site asks: “How does the list look now, in the first decade of the 21st Century?” “an additional list of key books is needed for 1950 to 2000. What should be included and why? Does Connolly's selection criteria need adjusting [just England (when so many of the books are from Ireland), France and America!] and if so how should this be done, remembering that Connolly was very precise in delineating the list as Key books, not best books?”

Updated iBooks

Updated iBooks 12/17/2004 06:34 PM
Apple have updated the range of iBooks. Processing power has increased and Airport cards are now standard across the range. Price reductions also bring down the 12-inch model below the magic $1000 mark (in the US obviously). The revised 14-inch model looks particularly good value — 1.33 GHz G4, 60Gb HD and DVD-R/CD-RW for £1049. Certainly a worthy alternative to the 12-inch PowerBook G4. Far be it from me to circulate rumours, but a revision to the iBook range suggests that the G5 PowerBooks may not be too far away…

Our updated Search

Our updated Search 09/02/2004 09:26 PM

We've had our own beta search engine for the past six months, but it was mostly a proof of concept, to see if we could build a search engine that recorded the semantics of web page metadata. Like any proof of concept launched to the public, it was slow, frequently returned zero results, and was difficult to keep up to date. A few months back, the guys behind the open source search engine project Nutch contacted us and they helped us develop a new search engine based on Nutch, with support for Creative Commons metadata thrown in.

We flipped the switch last week and have been testing it ever since. Compared the last version of our search engine, this one is blazingly fast to return results, the results are much more specific to what you're looking for, and it is constantly keeping up to date on over 1 million pages with Creative Commons license info in them.

Here are some sample searches I came up with while playing with the format and options:

"Show me all photos of Paris that I can make derivative works from and sell afterwards"

"I'd like to find songs about Love that I can remix"

"Find me some CC licensed music videos"

"Has anyone ever written about the Statue of Liberty?"

Overall, a drastic improvement. If you find any bugs or come up with any other specific searches that the search engine performed well, be sure to drop a comment and let us know.

Microsoft.com updated

Microsoft.com updated 08/27/2004 01:56 PM
Bink and others are reporting that Microsoft have updated their main website, Microsoft.com.

The site features a new layout, with more focus on directing users towards security and feature updates like service pack 2 for Windows XP. The navigation also appears clearer, allowing easier access to the many parts of Microsoft's site.

One problem that still remains, however, is the site's lack of standards compliance. It doesn't validate to the very basic (and somewhat aged) 4.01 HTML standard. Also, the site appears quite different in non-IE browsers - Firefox users don't see all elements of the site, and they also enjoy 'poor' images due to DHTML image rendering filters. See this post for more information.

StopDesign has an interesting piece on the new design, pointing out that Microsoft have moved away from tables, towards css, the effect being to reduce page size massivly. They've also moved away from "bulky javascript" that previously dominated the code.*

At the 20x2 event, Neal Pollack used his 2 minutes to kick off a campaign to get every weblogger to make fun of Lynn Cheney on April 1 in response to the White House's heavy-handed attempt to censor a parody of her at WhiteHouse.org. FastMac announces April Fools “No
Fooling” sale
04/01/2005 05:15 PM
FastMac is cutting prices on all items for its 3-Day April Fools “No Fooling” Sale from Friday, April 1st to Sunday, April 3rd. The sale includes FastMac’s G4 processor upgrades for G3 and G4 PowerMacs and 16X Dual-Layer SuperDrives, both starting at $99.95. “We’re excited to be the first to offer a G4 upgrade for under $100” says Michael Lowdermilk, Business Development Manager for FastMac Performance Upgrades. “This sale is our way of giving those who’ve put off upgrading one less excuse.” For $99.95, Lowdermilk says the FastMac ZIF processor upgrade replaces the original CPU in a Beige or Blue & White PowerMac G3 with a G4 CPU operating at up to 500 MHz. It also doubles the backside cache from 512k to 1 full MB, resulting in a 3 to 4 times boost in speed & performance. Optical drives start at $99.95 for a 16X Dual-Layer SuperDrive upgrade for PowerMacs. Other drives are available for multiple models including: PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs, Cubes, and Mac minis. Lowdermilk says all FastMac processor upgrades are 100% compatible with OS 9 and X and take full advantage of the G4 AltiVec Velocity Engine. AGP processor upgrades carry a three year warranty and ZIF and optical drive upgrades carry a one year warranty. All products come with a 30 day money back guarantee, he says.

Google Gulps Down April Fools, Wikipedia

04/01/2005 03:52 AM
Unlike the GMail storage increase, Google Gulp is one of the first big April Fools jokes floating around the internet this year:

"At Google our mission is to organize the world's information and make it useful and accessible to our users. But any piece of information's usefulness derives, to a depressing degree, from the cognitive ability of the user who's using it. That's why we're pleased to announce Google Gulp (BETA)™ with Auto-Drink™ (LIMITED RELEASE), a line of "smart drinks" designed to maximize your surfing efficiency by making you more intelligent, and less thirsty."

Looks as though Wikipedia has been bought by Encyclopedia Britannica...

"On April 1, 2005, Encyclopćdia Britannica - The Free Encyclopćdia announced its immediate semi-hostile takeover of the Wikimedia Foundation and all of its projects (now to be called Britannican reference subdivisions), including Wikipedia (now called Wikipćdia)"

Study Details Problems With Next
Generation April Fools Gags
04/01/2005 05:04 PM
There are what appears to be an even higher than normal set of ridiculous April Fool's gags out there today. While we do our best to avoid them (while chuckling here or there), the folks over at MobilePipeline deserve extra credit for not just coming up with an original April Fool's gag, but mocking the whole concept... all in one! Yes, it's a study on the steep growth curve associated with next generation April Fool's gags, predicting an ongoing "increase at a compounded annual rate of 22 percent through 2009." However, at the same time, they're noting that, with this rapid growth there has been a marked decline in quality -- which the industry needs to watch out for: "Vendors must embrace the fact that market penetration occurs not because of the quantity of the gags but because of the quality." Meanwhile, as all of these analysts like to do, they try to dig deeper into the meaning behind such a trend: "The dramatic increase in April Fools gags indicates a vibrant technology sector that, perhaps, has too much time on its hands." Indeed.
