New iTunes
New iTunes
04/28/2004 02:26 PMI've been playing with the new version of iTunes for the past hour
or two and the first thing that strikes me is all those annoying
little arrows that link to the music store. I could perhaps see this
being useful every once in a while, if I think to myself "I wonder if
there's a new record by Mountain Goats?" but I can't see doing that
more than once or twice a month. Why not put a "Look up in the iTunes
Music Store" right-click menu option instead? The weirdest part is
that my own purchased music has links to the store... so I can
purchase them again? I'm turning that off asap but I still wonder
why the arrows are turned on by default. Perhaps, as Tom just told me, to blur the lines
between "your music" and "the store music for sale" which would
certainly increase sales.
The party mix is weird looking, interface-wise, I wonder if it's
using any sort of BPM analysis to arrange songs next to each other. I
can't really tell the difference between that and random shuffle at
this point.
Andre pointed out
compilations to me, which I didn't notice before either. It appears
that they're reading compilation info from ID3 tags now, and putting
albums by various artists in the Artists browse list, which is kinda
useful.
DVD Jon becomes iTunes Jon
DVD Jon becomes iTunes Jon
01/06/2004 01:14 PMJon Johansen, the Norwegian programmer who cracked DVD encryption, has
effectively done the same with iTunes DRM-ed music.
"We're about to find out what Apple really thinks about Fair Use,"
Johansen told The Register via email. Johansen cracked iTunes DRM
scheme in November by releasing code for a small Windows program that
dumps the stream to disk in raw AAC format. This raw format required
some trivial additions to convert it to an MP4 file that could be
played on any capable computer.
But in the best Apple ease-of-use tradition, Johansen has now made
this
completely seamless, integrating it with the VideoLAN streaming free
software project.

You don't own your iTunes, they 0wn you
08/22/2004 07:30 AMCory Doctorow: Good blog post on why Apple iTunes
DRM -- and other DRM systems -- that convey the message "you don't
own the music you buy, you merely license it," make for such
unsatisfying experiences.
We are outraged at the theft of a bicycle. We would be astonished to
find bank executives having lunch on our patio, (“actually, if
you read the contract, you will see we own this part of your house-the
whole yard actually. Hank's gone to get his barbeque.”) We would
be unhappy to get a note from J. Crew telling us that the expiry date
for your new shoes has been moved forward and that we must cease and
desist in their public display. No, as we understand and feel it, we
own these things as if ownership were outright and in perpetuity.
Ownership has this quality in part because the things we own are part
of what Goffman would call our identity kit--they help define who we
are, both inwardly and outwardly. Strip us of these things, and our
lives become, as Lear put it, “cheap as beasts.”
Naturally, we regard the most “telling” of our possessions
as if they were strategic resources and we defend them as governments
do. Our security depends on their security.

iTunes 4 Windows
iTunes 4 Windows
10/28/2003 11:08 PMHell has indeed frozen over - Apple have made
iTunes 4.1 available to Windows users.
It's building up to an interesting time in the music sharing sphere
(?!). As competition to the iTunes Music Store,
Dell and
Napster are also rolling out their own music sharing
services within the next few weeks.
It'll be interesting to see how iTunes is received within the Wintel
crowd. I'm confident that the product speaks for itself - the only
problem might be making enough Window's users aware of it.
There may also be a negative effect simply resulting from it being an
Apple product, though the reverse of this argument doesn't hold when
you take into account the popularity of Microsoft software on the Mac
(Outlook, Word, Excel etc.).
iTunes And Windows XP SP 2
iTunes And Windows XP SP 2
08/12/2004 09:21 AMConspir
acy theory from a MacDailyNews reader: Microsoft is starting an
online music service. Microsoft releases an update to Windows. Their
largest competitor's software no longer works. Raise your hand if this
is a shock to you.
iTunes didn't "no longer works." What happened
is that the firewall in Windows is warning the user that, hey, iTunes
is sending out and receiving data into your computer. If you
trust iTunes and Apple, then just press this "OK" button to allow the
network traffic.
Which is precisely the correct behavior of a
firewall. If Microsoft's firewall didn't do this, I'd say that
Microsoft has failed in SP2.
One have to remember that there are
quite a bit of network traffic for iTunes: Rendezvous. (This is what
iTunes is using to share music, and find other users that are sharing
music.)
Sorry, but if you are going to post in a forum accusing
Microsoft (or any other companies) of doing illegal things, firstly,
get your facts straight.

The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows
The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows
12/22/2004 01:13 AMMicrosoft Windows have a philosophy, it seems, to offer one
thousand and one UI choices to do any single thing. This may not be
the best UI implementation, but, hey, it's interesting that Apple's
iTunes is taking this philosphy to heart.
On the Mac, you can
show iTunes as a full-fledge window, as a mini-window, or hide the
iTunes window.
On Windows, here's what you can do...
1)
Display as a full-fledge window, just like the Macintosh
version.
2) Display as a mini-window, just like the Macintosh
version.
3) Minimize the window, so that it appears as a button
on your task bar.
4) Also show the iTunes icon on the system
tray, so that you can right-click on it to access common iTunes menu
items. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose
"Advanced", and select "Show iTunes icon in system tray." Now,
minimize the iTunes windows.)
5) Show the iTunes icon on the
system tray, but don't show the iTunes button on the task bar. (To
enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and
select both "Show iTunes icon in the system tray" and "Minimize iTunes
window to system tray." Now, minimize the iTunes windows.)
6)
Don't show the iTunes icon on the system tray and don't show the
iTunes button on the task bar. Instead, show a mini-mini player on the
task bar itself. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog,
choose "Advanced", and unselect "Show iTunes icon in the system tray."
Right click on an empty area of your task bar, select the "Toolbars"
sub-menu, and then select the "iTunes" menu item. Now, minimize the
iTunes window.)
