Distance Doctoring, Distance Nursing And
Distance Learning... All Coming Back
05/12/2004 03:58 AMThe internet makes it easier to communicate with people over large
distances, and for years we've been hearing about the power of
"distance" everything. More recently, some of that talk had died down
after the early promises of distance learning/doctoring/whatever
failed to live up to its early hype. However, it appears that the
distance concept is coming back into fashion. One after the other, we
just came across three such stories. First, is the news of a hospital
in Michigan that is using a
robot with a video screen for a head to let remote doctors talk
to and examine patients. The doctor's can control the robot from
another location (such as home) in order to look over a patient
without being there in person. Of course, the idea isn't to replace
the need for the doctor to be present, but to make it easier in
situations when the doctor is away and is needed quickly (such as to
look over something in the middle of the night when they're home).
Meanwhile, over in the Netherlands, it's not the doctors who get to
stay home, but the patients, who can now use a
webc
am system to communicate with nurses. The idea is to help out the
elderly who are confined to their homes but can't afford to have a
healthcare worker visiting them on a regular basis. Meanwhile,
outside of the healthcare field it appears that even
e-learning is making a comeback, as companies are using it more
strategically, to help keep employees up-to-date and trained - but not
relying on it as a full replacement for training programs. No matter
what, it looks like another bunch of concepts discredited during the
boom and bust years are now making a comeback.

08/09/2004 07:19 AMMy family loves Shakespeare & Co. up in Lenox where we're currently on
vacation. We've been going to its performances for about twenty years
now. A couple of nights ago, we saw a preview of Comedy of Errors.
(Hint: It's the one with the two Dromios, no Rosalind, and doesn't
take place in Verona.) Shakespeare & Co.'s performances are always
lively, bawdy, and understandable. The troupe is first rate. Their
performances IMO feel like Shakespeare as he was seen by his
contemporaries. Yet, this performance wasn't my favorite. Too much
mugging, too broad, too hectic. Yes, it's a farce with...

Sony vs. The PSP Importers - A Comedy
06/24/2005 04:03 PM
Welcome to cuckoo world! Sony, in
all their majestic wisdom, has decided to hunt down and kill PSP
importers in the UK. Let's read this, shall we? "The Japanese
electronics giant Sony is demanding that companies importing its hotly
anticipated PlayStation Portable to Britain reveal their customers'
identities so the equipment can be tracked down."
Now, why would they do this? Because they are crazy? Because Sony
CEO Sir Howard Lancelot Stringer Esq. has finally gone all Howard
Hughes on us? Are those purchasers of Japanese PSPs in there on the
Rainy Isle using them to mount an offensive against the Sony Yakuza
stronghold or are they attempting to pay $400 for a game device. Next
week: Sony kills and eats babies.

Two years ago - a tremendous tragedy.
Two years ago - a tremendous tragedy.
07/01/2004 05:17 AM
On 1 July 2002 at 21:35:32 hrs a collision between a Tupolev
TU154M, which was on a flight from
Moscow/Russia to Barcelona/ Spain, and a Boeing B757-200, on a flight
from Bergamo/Italy to Brussels/
Belgium, occurred north of the city of Ueberlingen (Lake of
Constance). Investigation
Report as of May 2004, PDF. Very detailed, intelligibly
written.
71 people were killed in one of Europe's worst peacetime air
accidents. The report comes the the conclusion that human error was
the main cause. The
TCAS system (PDF) which should have prevented the
collision worked, but the Tupolew crew followed the ATC instructions.
It turned out that the air traffic controller missed a key warning on
his radar screen in one of a chain of errors.
ATCs from nearby airports realized what was going on but weren't able
to contact the responsible
Skyguide
controller
because the telephone network did not work:
the main telephone line was switched off because of work being
done on the telephone network, and the collision warning system was
temporarily shut down for maintenance.
The ATC in charge was
stabbed to
death in February 2004 by a Russian man
who lost his wife, son and daughter in the plane
crash. Tragedy of the network commons
Tragedy of the network commons
08/09/2004 09:11 AM
A recent survey found that 75 percent of Dartmouth students have
shared their network passwords. They like having people who know their
password, explained Denise Anthony, a sociologist who spoke at the PKI
summit conference I attended earlier this month. "They like having
someone who can check their e-mail for them or log them in to places
where they're supposed to be."
...
As security technologists, were easily dazzled by our shiny
cryptographic swords. But while were brandishing our swords, our
users -- like Indiana Jones in that famous scene from Raiders of the
Lost Ark -- might simply pull out their guns and shoot us. Better
security protocols alone cant thwart such game-changing
behavior. We need to understand what motivates the behavior and figure
out which carrots and sticks will influence it. [Full story at
InfoWorld.com]
The responses to this column expressed a mixture of hope and
resignation. The hope: that in a token-based authentication regime,
tokens will feel more like personal property than passwords do, and
that as a result, there will be less promiscuous behavior. The
resignation: that, as one reader put it, "there is no access control
system that is so convenient that some significant percentage of users
will not intentionally circumvent it in one way or another at least
some of the time."
