Maxtor OneTouch Offer Easy Backup And
Easy Storage
12/19/2003 11:33 AM

Both drives do a fine job of simplifying backup and providing external storage space. The ABSplus is a focused backup device that's easy to use, right out of the box, for backup and restoration, whereas Maxtor's cheaper and quieter drive is better for people who want extra disk space and more backup flexibility. Maxtor OneTouch II

Maxtor OneTouch II 09/23/2004 07:12 AM

OneTouch-II_3.jpg imageMaxtor has a new version of their external hard disk and backup solution, the OneTouch II. Available in 250GB or 300GB versions (7200RPM, 16MB cache, FireWire, USB 2.0), the new drives will come bundled with Dantz Retrospect backup software that should allow you to retain a series of incremental backups with history, so that if you'd like to retrieve an older version of a document - like say from a couple weeks back - you can pull up the older version even if you've made multiple changes. As the drive fills up, it will start axing older versions to free up space.

There's also a DriveLock feature which password protects the contents of the drive if it is powered down, but it's not clear if this could just be defeated by removing the drive itself from the chassis or if all the data is saved in an encrypted form at all times (I suspect the former).

CHKDSK and Maxtor OneTouch

CHKDSK and Maxtor OneTouch 02/07/2005 01:08 AM

I had a bad file on my Maxtor OneTouch drive so I ran XP's error correction tool on the drive.  But since then the laptop to which I usually connect the drive slowed down drastically to a point where the laptop was rendered useless and a source of noise as well (it's two fans were on all the time).

Typical solutions on XP slowdown didn't fix the problem but, when pulled the drive as well as the USB adapter (the laptop came with only USB 1.0 support) and rebooted, the problem disappeared.  Reconnecting the drive made the problem appear again.  Since there wasn't any process that was causing the CPU load, I think it was something related to the drive at the driver level.

Now the drive is connected to my desktop and seems to be working just fine.  I'll just have to remember not do check the drive for errors.  Backup storage you can't check for errors makes no sense but 250G is 250G.

Easy Come, Easy Go: Antigua Loses To US

Easy Come, Easy Go: Antigua Loses To US
Over Gambling
04/07/2005 05:39 PM
Antigua has been battling the US for some time over the US's ban on online gambling. For many years, Antigua-based online casinos have run into problems with US laws. Two years ago, they went to the WTO claiming that the US ban on online gambling was a violation of a fair trade agreement the two nations had signed. It took the WTO almost exactly one year to point out that Antig ua was probably right. Of course, that wasn't acceptable for politicians who seem to think gambling is pure evil (except, of course, when it contributes to local tax coffers) -- so, while they planned to ignore the ruling completely (we're the US, we don't follow international rulings unless we agree with them), they did file an appeal, just for fun. It turns out that appeal worked, and the WTO has changed its mind, saying that banning gambling is a "moral issue," and therefore not subject to the fair trade agreement the two nations signed. So, sorry for all you online gambling addicts in the US, but you're back to breaking the law again.

Neowin Review: Maxtor DiamondMax 10
250GB Hard Drive
03/28/2005 12:38 PM
After our very own Tom Graham reviewed some <a href="http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=27461&category=ma in" target="_Blank">portable</a> <a href="http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=27605&category=ma in" target="_Blank">hard</a> <a href="http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=296533" ; target="_Blank">drives</a>, today we'll have a look at a Desktop counterpart by Maxtor. The massive <b>250GB DiamondMax 10</b>. As large hard drives are becoming of an increased importance, we will also cover a small guide so you know what to look for when buying a new hard drive.
<ul>After plugging everything in, the drive was visible to my onboard Promise RAID/SATA Interface controller&#8217;s BIOS. In here, you can setup the &#8220;bootability&#8221; of drives and decide whether you want your hard drives to work in a RAID environment or simply to work alone; I decided to skip the RAID options and work alone. Maxtor offer a setup of tools to help you format the drive; MaxBlast, a piece of hard drive management software for Windows by Maxtor, for Maxtor drives.

The first thing you may notice, or not, is the noise level of the hard drive while in operation &#8211; it is, to say the least, very quiet. I found noise only noticeable whilst doing sustained file transfers between itself and my DiamondMax 9. I felt the drive was probably about twice as quiet as the DiamondMax 9; serious credit to Maxtor&#8217;s &#8220;Quiet Drive&#8221; technology, the Fluid Dynamic Bearings, and the fact that the spindle runs at 7,200 RPM (Western Digital has a line of hard drives running at a noisy 10K RPM).</ul>
Will this massive drive keep up to par with the other drives available? Namely the 10K RPM Western Digital Raptor drives? On to the review...

SATA-MaXLine-III_1.jpg imageBig buffer goes around the world, big buffer underground, or at least that's the old-time religion Maxtor is spinning with their new SATA MaXLine III, a new series of 250GB and 300GB hard drives with a whopping 16MB buffer, as well as other SATA II features like native command queuing (trust me, it's good). But the buffer, that's the big money, since you'll see real world performance increases from a bigger buffer in a lot bigger way than even faster interconnects like SATA or ATA/133 can offer on their own. Maxtor says big buffer is just for corporate power right now, but we'll see it tumble down our way soon enough.
