A glitch in Microsoft's Windows Update automated patching service caused a security fix that was released last month to be delivered to computer users on Tuesday, the same day Microsoft proclaimed December would be a patch-free month. The software patch fixes a serious vulnerability in a set of Web site management tools called FrontPage Server Extensions, which are part of Microsoft's Windows 2000, Windows XP and Office XP software, according to Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-051 released Nov. 11. Exploiting the flaw could allow an attacker to gain control over a user's PC, Microsoft said.

Bash.Diff 1.13 (Default branch)

Bash.Diff 1.13 (Default branch) 03/25/2005 07:11 PM
Bash.Diff is a patch against Bash that incorporates many useful features from Awk, Python, Zsh, Ksh, and others. In the main core, it adds the following: new brace expansion {a..b}, new parameter expansion ${var|...}, new command substitution $(=...), extended for, while, and until loops, extended case statement, new try-block with integer exception, and new here document <<+. As builtin commands, it adds the following: sscanf(3), <string.h>, and <ctype.h> wrappers, a variety of array and regex(3) operations, GDBM, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MySQL database interfaces, an HTML template engine (BASP), stack/queue operations on positional parameters and arrays, Expat XML parser interface, simple x-y character plot, DOS line support, and simple Awk emulation.
Changes:
'${var|-}' has been added to parameter expansion. 'arraycat' now appends to array variables without flushing the existing elements. DESTDIR has been added to the Makefile to aid package management.

Content-aware search

Content-aware search 02/10/2004 02:49 AM
At InfoWorld's 2002 CTO Forum, Google co-founder Sergey Brin threw cold water on the idea of instrumenting content for intelligent search. "I'd rather make progress by having computers understand what humans write," he said, "than by forcing humans to write in ways that computers can understand." Brin's pragmatic stance sharply opposes the idealistic view of the Web's inventor, Tim Berners-Lee, who continues to evangelize his vision of a Semantic Web full of carefully encoded content that we can precisely search and fluidly recombine. My own humble contribution to this debate is a prototype search engine, now running on my Weblog, that tries to steer a middle course between the Scylla of simple fulltext search and the Charybdis of unwieldy tagging schemes and brittle ontologies. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
I keep trying out phrases to capture what I'm aiming for. One is 'dynamic categories,' another is 'interoperable content.' Probably neither will stick, because these only describe how to do something, not why. The why, of course, is productivity. ...

05/05/2004 05:00 PM
MSDN subscribers can now get their hands on the version of Longhorn that WinHEC attendees got yesterday. Microsoft has posted build 4074 of Longhorn on the MSDN Subscriber Downloads site. Interestingly, the iso of build 4074 registers at 733.75 MBs, meaning it must be burned onto a DVD. The iso for 4074 is nearly 100 MBs larger than the iso distributed at last year's PDC. Anyway, click the headline to get started! Microsoft has said they are making this available only for download, and will not ship Longhorn build 4074 with the June updates.

MSN Video Download for PMC and Pocket PC

dfasfasfp.jpgOne of my biggest criticisms of Microsoft's Portable Media Center platform has been that there's really nothing to watch. You could download a few B-list movies from CinemaNow and Major League Baseball games or copy stuff from your Windows Media Center PC, but if you wanted to put anything else on the device, you had to transcode your video to Windows Media Video format (a hassle I will, perhaps unfairly, put up with in the PSP, but not in a device with the primary purpose of playing back video).

Thankfully, Microsoft has finally launched MSN Video Downloads, the long-promised service to provide daily-updated content for easy download and syncing to your Portable Media Center. I haven't used it, but glancing over the content list looks somewhat promising—enough so that the $20-a-year subscription fee is probably worth it, if you've already dropped $400 on a PMC (and the content works on Pocket PCs, as well).

RSS Sync is a Pocket PC 2003 ActiveSync Extension. It synchronizes RSS/RDF news to your PDA - effectively creating an offline newsreader. The sync program updates RSS data at scheduled intervals. Data is then synchronized to the PDA, where it can be viewed in the RSS Viewer aggregator. The headlines are stored in a small database on the PDA, so you can carry the information with you anywhere and examine it without being connected on the internet. When a link to a website is provided with the RSS article, you can activate it and be redirected to a web-browser, which connects and retrieves the web-site online.

Windows Longhorn?

Windows Longhorn? 08/11/2004 12:43 AM
I'm not sure why Microsoft feel the need to reinvent the name of their operating system with every major release: Windows 1.0 to 3.1.1, Windows 95 to 98, Windows NT 3.5 to 4.0, Windows Me, Windows 2000 to 2003, Windows XP. Sure it's confusing, isn't it?
But, anyhoo, can you help out Microsoft's marketing department in coming up with a new name for Longhorn?
