Sony Direct-to-DVD Camcorder

Sony Direct-to-DVD Camcorder 12/25/2004 05:18 PM

sony_DVD7E.jpg imageThe first thing that comes to mind when seeing Sony's DCR-DVD7E is that it looks rather like a Discman, but this is of course only because it must make room for a DVD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD+RW to use as recording media. The unit, announced yesterday in Europe, has a 2.5-inch LCD viewfinder on the back, and despite perhaps looking a bit unimpressive, the lens does a respectable 10x optical zoom. No idea what it's going to cost when it hits European shelves in May.

Sony unveils HDV camcorder

Sony unveils HDV camcorder 09/07/2004 10:40 AM
Sony Corp. will begin selling its first high-definition video camcorder in Japan on Oct. 15, and worldwide by the end of the year, the company said in an announcement Tuesday. While the camcorder is compatible with Japan's HDV high-definition digital video format, users cannot store video on Sony's Blu-ray Disc format. The HDR-FX1 camcorder is Sony's first step in promoting high definition video as the standard format for home-use camcorders, but its price makes it too expensive for most families initially, the company said.

Sony DCR-PC350 Camcorder Reviewed 07/09/2004 01:27 PM

Sony-DCR-PC350_flash.jpg imageCamCorderInfo has the first review I've seen of the Sony DCR-PC350, the new pocket-sized camcorder with the 3.31-megapixel sensor. Sadly, although it's a pretty decent review in general, they don't talk too much about the still image quality, something I'm sure many of us would like to know more about, since one of the major selling points of the DCR-PC350 is its function as a convergence device. Still, there is some good information in there, including talk of a "Cinematic Effect" setting that shoots video progressively, tweaks the color, and drops every fifth frame in an effort to emulate the look of film. And it works, sort of, at least as an interesting effect (although they say it ends up looking more like 8mm film than fancy, Hollywood-quality stuff.)

Sony DCR-HC40 MiniDV Camcorder Review 06/21/2004 10:31 AM

sony_dcr-hc40.jpg imagePC Mag reviews the Sony DCR-HC40 MiniDV camcorder, and despite some issues with the touch-screen controls, find the most important stuff -- image quality, battery life, and price -- to be very strong for a $700 camera. It has "intelligent accessory shoes" that can power an optional light or microphone, and it happens to have an internal lens cover, something I find highly appealing in the smaller throw-and-go camera segment. Still image cameras almost all have internal lens covers these days; I don't know why we expect anything different from camcorders.
