LG's New 3.24-Megapixel Clamshell

lge_3mega.jpg imageLG Electronics is providing a pair of 3.24-megapixel camera phones to SK Telecom (the LG-SD350) and KTF (the LG-KP2500) which use a mechanical shutter instead of a software technique to improve image quality. Also interesting is the fact that the handsets are clamshells, instead of candy bar phones -- the last 3-megapixel phone we saw, the Samsung SPH-2300, has a more traditional camera shape, although it has an optical zoom, as well. I would hazard a guess that the new LG phones do not (although these days, it's hard to tell).

Meanwhile, some of the phones in the US are starting to get 1-megapixel sensors. Wowsers!

PM-8920.jpg imageI can hardly believe it's true, but MobileTracker is reporting that Sprint has announced the Audiovox PM-8920, the first megapixel-plus cameraphone for the US market. And if that weren't enough, the price is to be low -- $150 after rebates. Among its other features, the PM-8920 also features an 'Airplane Mode,' a special setting that allows games and applications to be used while keeping the cellular radio powered down. (That sounds like a load of fun to explain to the stewardesses.)

The PM-8920 should be in stores today. If any of you early adopters want to send in early impressions, feel free.

Is That a Phone In Your Pocket... 09/07/2004 03:56 PM

pokia.JPGTired of talking on that tiny cellphone handset that makes your ear sweat and only comes to the back of your jawbone when you hold it to your ear? Nick Poole's Pokia is a crazy bit of retro chic that turns old 70's-style phone handsets into cellphone accessories. His latest creation, for sale on Ebay, is a Bluetooth-enabled version.

This is the my first bluetooth prototype. I've had it working for a few weeks now and works really well. The charger is at the end of the wire which turns out to be pretty useful. The answer button as you can see is on the top of the handset and the indicator light is mounted on the back. The only slight flaw is that you need a matchstick to adjust volume. Works with any bluetooth phone. Comes with charger (uk spec so you might need a converter if buying from outside the uk).

I don't know how much sense it makes for cellphones, but something like this would work great as a computer accessory for services like Skype. Nick has a number of other models, like the DJ Convoy (a set of headphones and a CB radio microphone), and the Hotline, a handset that looks like it fell off the phone that Reagan used to dial Gorbachev with.

eten_P300B.jpg imageAnd while we're on the phone tip, PDA Buyer's Guide has reviewed the E-TEN P300B, a compact, if not powerful Pocket PC phone that will be sold under the FutureCom Global brand here in the US. It's not a beast, with a 200MHz processor, although an ample amount of RAM, plus SDIO, but considering the P300B can be purchased unlocked -- can only be purchased unlocked, in fact -- it looks like a decent, fairly cheap option for someone who wants a GSM Pocket PC without being locked into a single carrier.

Many companies have come to favor specialized measurable education for both their employees and those they look to hire, as witness the large number of "certified" acronyms nowadays -- CCNA, MCSE, RHCE, SCSE, LPIC, ICSA. A few years ago, you couldn't find a Linux certification program anywhere. Today, with Linux showing up all over the enterprise, training and certification programs are showing up as well. In fact, three of the six acronyms above refer to Linux certifications, not the Cisco or Microsoft certifications we're used to hearing about.

sharpll1513d_rev.jpg imageThere's no doubt that the Sharp LL-151-3D is a cool product—3D displays without any goofy headgear is the double pluses. But are any of you guys actually using them? I can think of a few situations (medical, 3D imaging) where they'd be handy, but the 15-inch size seems a little down market for hot-to-trot medical researchers/Science Officers. And it's too expensive for gaming, costing more than most gaming PCs do in total. Anyway, just curious. There's got to be a way I can justify buying one for work.

Sharp CE-MR01

Sharp CE-MR01 12/27/2004 01:28 PM

This year definitely was the year of the streaming media device. Sharp is introducing a new unit in Japan early next year, called the CE-MR01, designed to stream a variety of image and movie formats over Wi-Fi. And it looks nice and all (you really can't tell with these things until you use the interface), but I can't help but wonder if they are just a flash in the pan.

DVDs are still a dominant content delivery platform for movies and television, which means everyone will need a DVD player. PVRs with hard drives are common for people with cable and satellite television. There are plenty of set-top boxes already, I'm saying. Since these streaming media devices are basically just decoding chipsets with Wi-Fi and Ethernet, why do they need to be separate units at all? I bet by this time next year, you'll be hard pressed to buy a DVD player that doesn't do streaming media from a network share.

The tri-band GSM clam shell also has an LED flash and a built-in, SD-reading MP3 player, as well as a good-sized 262k color screen. And it has autofocus—I still can't get my head around how that works with no moving parts. It's relatively inexpensive at €150 (with contract, of course). I'm looking forward to seeing some of the images taken with its HAL-like camera.

Why? Because the inside is filled with solid gold pudding, and developing non-conductive golden pudding is the sort of science that doesn't come cheap.
