Sony Claims Humanoid Robot First

Sony Claims Humanoid Robot First 12/18/2003 11:48 AM
A press release from Sony claims they have developed the world's first fully autonomous humanoid robot with internal power and control that is capable of running. The robot is an upgraded version of the Sony QRIO, a robot we've seen before. The robot uses a control theory called Zero Moment Point (ZMP) and in addition to running is capable of other extreme motion that involves one or both feet leaving the ground such as jumping. Additional photos of QRIO in action can be found on the Japanese PC Watch site. There's also a Slashdot discussion about QRIO.

Toyota Humanoid Robot in the Works

Toyota Humanoid Robot in the Works 12/30/2003 01:38 PM
Yahoo says that Japan's top carmaker, Toyota plans to develop a humanoid robot by 2005. Toyota says they will give more details in January and hopes to display the robot at a World Exposition tradeshow in 2005. Toyota's robot will be a worker robot and built for "practical" purposes. A tall order for the robot includes nurse duties, factory work assistance, and rescue operations. Toyota even has plans to sell the humanoid robot, unlike some other Japanese companies that just build humanoid robots as test platforms and audience entertainers. Toyota even hopes to apply some of the newly developed technology to their cars.

Sony PSP Taxes, Robot Upskirts

Sony PSP Taxes, Robot Upskirts 03/22/2005 04:46 PM

europe_psp.jpgBrother blogger Brian at Kotaku decides to rain on California PSP purchasers' parades as he exposes a previously obscure application of the Electronic Waste Recycling Act, which according to initial assessments will apply to sales of the PSP. That means everyone in California has to pay an extra $6 (no big deal) when buying their PSP, but retail outlets like EB Games and Gamestop may not be ready to process the tax, which could lead to sales delays or fines (a slightly bigger deal). All this PSP drama and I still don't have one.

And in only a marginally related bonus link, adult funtime swami Fleshbot has discovered the true use of Sony Ericsson ROB-1 Bluetooth Camera Robot.

Sony Wants Robot Midgets to Chat You Up 07/29/2004 08:36 AM

20040728ij11.jpg imageMoviegoing experience has told me that Sony's recently established "Intelligence Dynamics Laboratory" isn't a good idea. Sony has set a goal - the creation of a realistic conversation partner robot in five years. Mr. Doui, father of the Aibo, has even been brought in, along with 350 computers to "compute 1 trillion calculations per second." Let's hope Sony teaches the robots English, too, otherwise we'll all be hosed. Thankfully, Sony will be building the new robots based on the 2 foot QRIO, so when they become self-aware, they'll be a good 3-4 feet shorter than us Americans. PUNT.

The Sum of Humanoid Parts

The Sum of Humanoid Parts 06/25/2004 05:41 AM
Machines are getting more and more like the rest of us. A piece-by-piece guide to the globe's most advanced bots. By Robert Capps from Wired magazine.

The Humanoid Race

The Humanoid Race 07/02/2004 11:28 AM
This month's issue of Wired Magazine includes a feature about robotics for which I was one of several contributors:
Consider the progress of just the past 15 years. There are now robots that can get around on two legs, participate in simple conversations, and manipulate objects in rudimentary ways. Of course, we don't yet have a bot that can navigate downtown Manhattan, tie its shoelaces, or even tell a chair from a desk. MIT's Cynthia Breazeal holds out hope that within five years, robots will cross a critical threshold, becoming partners rather than tools - in other words, we'll have friends, not appliances. And while there are a number of extremely complex problems to solve before we can make something as advanced as Sonny, the star of I, Robot, we're getting there, one piece at a time. To find out where the state of the art lies, Wired surveyed the projects that might one day add up to an android just like the rest of us.

Primate Kinematics and Humanoid Robots

Primate Kinematics and Humanoid Robots 05/30/2004 07:13 PM
NASA's Robert O. Ambrose has co-authored a new research paper titled Primate Anatomy, Kinematics, and Principles for Humanoid Design (PDF format). The paper investiages the theory that kinematics, musculature, perception, and cognition can be optimized for specific tasks by varying the proportions of limbs. Known as the Bifurcated Chain Hypothesis, the idea is that the proportions of humans made them superior to other primates and animals at specific tasks such as tool-making. Ambrose has studied body articulation and its application to robotics for some time. You may also recognize his name from the NASA Robonaut project.

David Hanson Speaks on Humanoid Robots

David Hanson Speaks on Humanoid Robots 11/19/2003 08:14 PM
The University of Texas at Dallas has announced that David Hanson will be speaking on the future of "Human-Like" Robots on Thursday, November 20 at 5:30 p.m., in Room 1.112 of the Conference Center on the UTD campus in Richardson, Texas. The talk is free and open to the public. David Hanson is best known for K-Bot, the human-like robot head that has prompted many a bad pun here on robots.net. Hanson's robot head is intended to be a duplicate of his girl friend's head. The head is so life-like that some feel it may be a good test of Masahiro Mori's "Uncanney Valley" theory.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)

Sony_DSC-T3.jpg imageGott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the day.

Well, okay, I take that back—it's sort of giggle-worthy when they arrest you when you hit the ground. Italian tourist Antonio Casale apparently hadn't ever heard this chestnut of wisdom, and neither had his wife, who contacted authorities upon receiving prank messages from her husband. What a fun-filled marriage they must share.

SCO sends IBM 1,000,000 pieces of paper

SCO sends IBM 1,000,000 pieces of paper 12/10/2003 10:17 PM
As part of a court order to provide IBM with evidence relating to SCO's frivolous anti-Linux lawsuit, SCO sent IBM one million sheets of paper on which were printed the source-code that SCO alleges is being infringed upon. Of course, this is just a tactic to sabotage IBM's defense, since it needs all that code in a machine-readable format.
"Knowing full well that IBM would need its source code in electronic form so that proper analyses--such as those SCO itself claims to have performed--could be conducted, SCO instead produced the source code on one million sheets of paper," IBM said in the motion. "The only reason for SCO's production of code on paper was, we believe, to stall the progress of these proceedings while giving the (false) impression of being forthcoming in its discovery responses."

In response to IBM's complaint, Stowell said, "If a company wants code, it's the other party's decision to provide that any way they feel like providing that."
