Adobe Launches Own E-Book Store

Adobe Launches Own E-Book Store 12/18/2003 04:35 AM
So soon after Barnes & Noble shut down their own eBook store, Adobe apparently realized they need to jumpstart this market on their own, if they want to make sure that electronic books start showing up in their preferred pdf format. So, they've gone and launched their own damn e-book store with a ton of books and magazines - all in the pdf format, of course. An interesting idea (sort of like Apple opening up iTunes to drive iPod sales). However, Adobe may find that they have a bigger hurdle to face. They won't get the same sort of buzz that Apple got, most people don't associate Adobe with electronic books, and plenty of people are still unsure why they want electronic books. Yes, there are some who like e-books, and who are familiar with Adobe's efforts, but it's been a small group, and it's unclear if this will alert many more people.

With this launch, Adobe Press is debuting the Adobe Creative Suite 2 Classroom in a Book, an introduction to the CS2 applications with expert advice for using the programs together efficiently. The updated series is now in color and offers complete, self-paced lessons. A CD-ROM with customized files to guide readers through the lessons and special projects, sample test questions from Adobe's certification exam, and instructional videos are also included. Adobe Press' classic Classroom in a Book series debuted in 1993 and has since been translated into more than 20 languages and sold over 3 million copies worldwide.

for Devices

Microsoft is leading a group of vendors proposing a specification intended to extend Web services to devices. An official at rival Sun Microsystems, however, blasted Microsoft for what Sun believes is another attempt to foist a Web services standard on the rest of the industry. Along with BEA Systems, Canon, and Intel, Microsoft on Tuesday is proposing WS-Discovery, which purports to bring the benefits of Web services to devices by enabling discovery of services, such as a laptop finding a local printer. WS-Discovery, which is being unveiled at the Intel Developer Forum event in San Francisco, describes a way for devices to find and connect to Web services in a simple, lightweight way, according to Microsoft.
