Keeping Found Things Found on the Web
01/28/2004 08:56 AMKeeping Found Things Found on the Web - A Research Project of
the Information School at the University of Washingtonhttp://kftf.isc
hool.washington.edu/projKFTF.asphttp://kftf
.ischool.washington.edu/publications.aspThe goal of
this study is to understand better the ways in which people manage
information for subsequent re-access and re-use. The study focuses on
the management of information found on the Word Wide Web. Follow-on
studies will look at similar problems and practices of personal
information management for other information types including email and
personal files (electronic and paper-based). The classic problem of
information retrieval, simply put, is to help people find the
relatively small number of things they are looking for (books,
articles, web pages, CDs, etc.) from a very large set of
possibilities. This classic problem has been studied in many
variations and has been addressed through a rich diversity of
information retrieval tools and techniques.
A follow-on
problem also exists which has received relatively less study: Once
found, how are things organized for re-access and re-use later on?
What can be done to avoid the need to repeat the entire search
process? We refer to this as the problem of Keeping Found Things
Found. The current study addresses this problem in the context of
World Wide Web use. The study focuses on use of the Web by managers,
researchers, librarians and other information specialists. But it is
expected that the results of the study will be relevant to most users
of the Web.

Tropos Found Weighs in on Dirty Mesh
Secrets
07/09/2004 08:12 PMThe founder and chief architect of mesh networking firm Tropos adds
his two cents to the "ugly truths" about mesh networking thread:
Narasimha Chari has added his comments that clarify many of the
problems with mesh networking that Francis daCosta raised at Daily
Wireless several days ago. I linked to daCosta's original post and
posted and linked to two replies on the topic already in this archived
item. Chari says that daCosta has his primary calculation wrong:
instead of a bandwidth reduction in a single-radio mesh system where n
is the number of hops of (1/2)^n, it's 1/n. This calculation results
in an enormously higher throughput than daCosta (click slide from
Nitin Vaidya that Chari references at upper right for the dropoff by
hops in throughput). Chari makes a number of additional useful points
on this topic that are worth considering. Tropos has deployed through
its integrator and resellers the largest number of mesh points in
commercial use in the U.S., and potentially worldwide, that I'm aware
of. If they don't know what they're talking about, then a lot of
networks are operating by hypnosis instead of science....

03/17/2005 03:17 AMI’m working on a
Java.net project
that we’re getting ready to de-cloak, and I agreed to fix up some of
the files. So I looked at the setup instructions, and the
command-line CVS here on my Mac worked first time, and the whole thing
checked out no problem, and there I was doing
update and
diff and

Java.net seems to run awfully slow sometimes. But it’s so great
when things that are supposed to plug together just plug together and
work.

On Cognitive Dissonance
"As a behavioral psychologist, I have studied people's
reactions to contradiction and inconsistency. We are capable of
convincing ourselves of something, and the more evidence that builds
up to contradict us the more we believe it.
For more than 40 years, social psychologists have studied the
phenomenon of "cognitive dissonance" - what happens when
people have pieces of information on the same subject that are
inconsistent. The presence of contradictions is psychologically
unpleasant, and people do whatever it takes to resolve the
inconsistency."
Many in the field posit that tension between contradictory thoughts
and feelings are what constitutes consciousness. It doesn't seem to
me this qualifies as it appears to be highly dysfunctional and not a
natural and normal tension. What say you who are more qualified?

Simon
Phipps and I were working on something that had to be done by the
end of that day, and he pinged me “Got
SubEthaEdit?”.
I do, and I’ve used it occasionally when sitting around a table with
some people, but he said “Point it at my server.” I hadn’t
realized how smoothly this worked across the Internet, but we both got
our hands on the document at the same time (he in Southampton, I in
Vancouver) and we worked out the problems and got the job done, no
fuss no muss. Is there anything similar on Windows or Linux/Unix, or
even better cross-platform? Because it’s pretty serious magic.
[Update: Robert Chassell
writes to say that Emacs has been able to do this for years, although
the functions having names like talk-connect and
make-frame-on-display has probably not helped the
uptake.] [Hsui-Fan Wang and one other person whose email I lost wrote

They apply their talents in myriad positions, from sales and marketing

Why are they here? To create something that matters – to themselves,
