E-Voting Undermined by Sloppiness

E-Voting Undermined by Sloppiness 12/18/2003 05:50 AM

An audit reveals that a number of Californians voted on Diebold machines that were not properly certified by either the state or the feds. The company owns up to procedural errors, while state officials seethe. Kim Zetter reports from Sacramento.

E-voting

E-voting
Given the accomplishments of computer technology, it may seem strange that the U.S. has not migrated to e-voting systems, which are used in other countries. This issue of Topic in Depth reviews some of the e-voting systems currently in use and explores some of the political, legal, and scientific issues surrounding this transition.

The first website from How Stuff Works (1) gives an overview of e-voting systems. Diebold, one of the foremost providers of e-voting systems, posts this website (2)on its system, which also includes an online demonstration. The third website (3)archives articles from Wired that relate to e-voting, providing an overview of some of the key issues raised as scientists, the government and the public debate the decision to use e-voting. Of course, the U.S. is not the only country making this transition. For example, this fourth website (4) tracks current developments in e-voting in Ireland. In addition, the Australian government posts this website (5) with information on that country's e-voting system and even posts the open source code for the software. This recent article (6) by IEEE computer scientists reviews the technological difficulties involved in secure e-voting systems. Meanwhile, EFF (7) archives legal cases on e-voting from over the years on its website along with related materials. Finally, the First Society in Computing (8) reviews its activities and desire to "ensure the integrity and reliability of our nation's election process" on this last website. E-voting Con and Con-Con

E-voting Con and Con-Con 07/16/2004 01:52 PM
Two items at Computerworld.com. First, here's Harris Miller, president of Technology Association of America (ITAA) on the attempts to stop e-voting until the machines are reliable: It's not about voting machines. It's a religious war about open-source software vs. proprietary software..If you're a computer scientist and you think that open-source software is the solution to everything because you're a computer scientist and you can spot all flaws, then you hate electronic voting machines. But if you're a person who believes that proprietary software and open-source software can both be reliable, then you don't hate electronic voting machines. Hmm. It's actually...

Don't Trust E-Voting? Too Bad

Don't Trust E-Voting? Too Bad 09/15/2004 03:01 PM
Over in Maryland, where studies have shown that the e-voting machines are not secure, the courts have decided that if you don't trust the e-voting machines, that's your own damn problem. They will not allow people to ask for a paper ballot if they feel uncomfortable using one of those electronic voting machines. The court also found that the state had "done everything necessary" to show the e-voting machines were accurate and secure. Apparently, they have pretty low standards.

All over but the voting and GOTV

All over but the voting and GOTV 12/17/2004 06:40 PM
A friend wrote to me to thank me for working on Get Out the Vote. As I told him, I have mostly been having a blast working on GOTV, although at this point my brain is fried into a crispy critter from 3 weeks of 5 hours sleep a night. We are averaging 15 calls a minute on our busiest site now, and it was over 100 calls a minute on Sunday. If you have nothing else to do, feel free to go to www.votercall.org, register, and tell newly registered voters in PA and OH (and states west later in the night) why it is important to vote. Hearing someone tell them that their voice matters can make all the difference. As I have written earlier, I have lived in countries where political matters were decided by guns, not votes. I was explaining to the progeny last night why it is so important that in this county, the final judge is the people's votes, and how, even though I loathe George W. Bush, if he is fairly re-elected I will consider him the legitimate president of the United States, and myself part of the loyal opposition. I got teary eyed. I really believe in democracy, and I am proud of contributing to it....

Voting Technology as Magic (or not)

Voting Technology as Magic (or not) 04/09/2004 04:01 PM
I posted earlier about the open source auditable touchscreen voting system developed by Open Voting Consortium. I don't know whether the system does everything they claim it can, however, unlike proprietary systems like Diebold's voting machines, anyone will be free to examine the inner workings of their system to see for themselves how it works, and will be free critique it or improve upon it themselves. The whole voting machine issue reminds me of Arthur C. Clarke's famous quote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." The voting machine vendors want people to think that their technology is magic -- you touch the screen and your vote is instantly recorded and counted at the central office and sent to the TV networks so they can declare a winner as soon as the polls close. Computer professionals and academics, who have been at the forefront of the opposition to the adoption of audit-less blackbox voting technology, work with technology every day and know that it is as subject to Murphy's Law as any other human endeavour....

Top Ten Reasons to Lower the Voting Age 04/09/2004 03:55 PM
Many of you have by now heard of the high profile bill in California to lower the voting age to 14 for state and local elections. In spite of the onerous partial vote system called for in the bill, I believe it should be supported. This bill has often been slighted, mocked and maligned by columnists and pundits, so in the interests of fairness I present to you the top ten reasons to lower the voting age.
