Segway Stumbles in Europe

Segway Stumbles in Europe 12/18/2003 05:49 AM

The Segway Human Transporter isn't making it to the top of many European Christmas lists this year. In addition to costing thousands of dollars, the two-wheeled scooter appears to be illegal in most of the EU. By Jeroen van Bergeijk.

Intel Stumbles on Wi-Fi Again, with
Grantsdale

Intel Stumbles on Wi-Fi Again, with
Grantsdale
06/18/2004 09:29 AM
eWeek reports that Intel's new desktop CPU system won't have Wi-Fi at launch: Intel had been talking up its "Grantsdale" chipset's ability to act as a Wi-Fi software access point for months, but now won't be able to include Wi-Fi at all in the shipping version. They expect to provide a separate PCI card late in the year to enable Wi-Fi and this function. The idea that purchasers of a desktop system will have to return to the trough and then install an internal PCI card is, of course, ludicrous for most consumers. Intel's gap leaves the door wide open for competitors like Broadcom, which already ate Intel's lunch on the laptop side, and has been a little provider of integrated modules that include gigabit Ethernet, a 56K modem, and 802.11g Wi-Fi. Will Dell and others who turned to Broadcom for laptop Wi-Fi turn to them for the desktop version, too? At least there will be a flurry of competition among the several chipmakers who can supply the market. This delay is another major stumble for Intel, which came late to the Wi-Fi party with Centrino, shipping 802.11b-only radios a year ago spring with that laptop system, after having promised 802.11a options. Then, with 802.11a, and a/g radios scheduled for 2003, was unable to provide them. At this writing, the Centrino successor Dothan still hasn't appeared on the market in a big way, with manufacturers shipping their first models based on it just this week with 802.11g only....

Beyond Segway

Beyond Segway 11/13/2003 04:02 PM
We've been receiving lots of stories about Segway spin-offs lately. First, there's the EMBRIO/2025, a next-generation, one-wheeled personal transporter design from Bombardier. It's very reminiscent of Syd Mead's gyro-balanced, one-wheel designs. No guesses on if or when it could really be made, however. Jerry D. Elmore sent us a link to several of his designs for turning the Segway into a "multi-taskable product" by allowing it to double as an automous robot that can perform surveillance or other duties. And a number of readers pointed out the new Technology Review article on Cardea, an MIT robot based on a Segway.

If you depend on Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign documents to fill your Web pages, GoLive CS is an invaluable tool for accelerating the Web-development process. But while the program offers many advanced features for building and managing Web sites, its lackluster support for current CSS techniques and its sometimes complex and overwhelming interface are serious drawbacks. Segway Becoming a War Robot?

Segway Becoming a War Robot? 12/02/2003 12:23 AM
CTV.ca has an article that says U.S. considers turning scooters into war robots.Though few could afford the $4,000 Segway scooters, Universitys bought them for study and now the US millitary wants to enlist them for battlefield missions. Segways have already been modified to open doors and avoid obstacles and such, and now the military wants to send them out for search missions, transporting injured soldiers and carrying gear. So maybe the Segway scooter deserves more of our respect, because even as President Bush embarrisingly found out, these Segways now have the potential to do harm.

Move over, Segway...

Move over, Segway... 05/26/2004 01:25 PM

...here comes the Eas yGlider. Basically an electrically-powered single wheel with a long handle trailing behind it. You can let it pull you on roller blades or a skateboard, or attach a wheeled standing platform to it. It's much lighter and much less complicated than the Segway, and will likely be cheaper as well. And it goes faster too!

The Swiss manufacturer has a domain, but so far it's under construction.

This is almost as cool as the new Schwinn Stingray. I want one.

Another Year, Another President For
Segway

Segway, the massively overhyped balancing scooter company, can't seem to keep chief executives. Last year we wrote about how they had already shuffle d through a couple of presidents, and now comes the news that they've hired yet another new president and CEO, replacing the last one. This one comes from the snowmobile world, so maybe he's got better ideas for how to market such a niche vehicle. One of the previous presidents had come from Subaru and tried to sell the Segway like a car - which clearly didn't work out so well. Clearly, the company is having a very difficult time living up to the hype it generated early on.

Last week, I got to visit the Bigha bike factory and ride one of them. They're pretty cool, but at $3,000 they're a bit expensive. While this reduces my odds of winning one, I might as well mention they're giving one away between now and April 30th if you sign up for their brochure.

BoingBoing buddy and robotics whiz John Wiseman says:
Regarding Segway robotics, I thought you might be interested to know that DARPA funded development of a Segway-based common robotics platform (the "RMP"): Link. A group at CMU is working on a Robocup robot soccer team using the Segway RMP: Link. One cool thing about their work is that it's the first robot soccer team (as far as I know) that can play with and against humans on the field. Unfortunately they don't seem to have any images/video of that online; I saw some video at a conference a few weeks ago.

Random thing #1: I hear there's an upcoming exhibit at the Center for Land Use Interpretation of video from cameras mounted on sheep, spiders, tumbleweeds, etc. Sounded cool. Link. Sheep stampede video: Link. Random thing #2: Origami folding robot at CMU: Link.

Segway Retailers Zip into Area

"The first Segway Human Transporter stores are scheduled to open this weekend in Chicago and LaGrange. The pair will be the only Segway stores in the state and two of just 35 dealerships in the country.....

...The new shops will let consumers practice on the models so they can check them out before buying one." [Chicago Sun-Times]

LaGrange is the next suburb over from where I work, so you know what we'll be doing during lunch one day next week! I'll definitely be moblogging that one. :-)
