One Less Online Music Store To Deal With

One Less Online Music Store To Deal With 06/11/2004 12:55 PM
In early 2003 a group of the top brick-and-mortar music retail shops announc ed plans for a unified downloadable music store that got lots of attention. We were a bit skeptical, assuming (like most companies) they wouldn't really want to cannibalize their existing business models and would come up with something that was expensive and weak. They didn't even get that far. Without ever launching, they've pulled the plug on the program, claiming that there's just not enough business in online music sales for it to matter to them. While it's nice that there's not "yet another" online music store offering music that won't work with any music you buy from any other music download store, this is quite a statement on how these stores view downloadable music. Downloadable music is much more of a threat to the record stores' business models than the record labels, yet the stores have mostly decided to put their heads in the sand and assume it's not worth worrying about. Someone ought to send them a copy of < i>The Innovator's Dilemma.

Walgreens online store being obnoxious 02/01/2005 09:33 PM
The other day I had trouble with the online Apple Store trying to order a Mac Mini: Of course they sorta almost had an excuse. I can see how it's not worth it for them to scale their systems for the once a year frenzy over a few hours. And I'm not sure it's a loss for them in the end. At least I persisted and I got my order through. :-) Fast forward a few days. I'm ordering a...

Online t-shirt store: "we were gagged by
Google"
04/27/2004 06:51 PM
Y-que, my favorite t-shirt store in glamorous Silverlake, LA, CA, claims to have been "gagged by Google." This is the online shop that makes all the "FREE [MISBEHAVING CELEBRITY NAME HERE]" t-shirts, and the TOTAL RETARD shirts bearing Arnold Schwarzenneger's smug mug. Free Y-Que!
From: Google:The following...items that must be removed from your site in order to continue advertising with Google AdWords:

Recall Bush - White T-shirt (with radio control on head)
Dumb and Dumber White T-shirt - Bush and Blair: The Movie
You're Fired - George W. Bush White T-shirt
Dump Cheney White T-shirt - "Halliburton" tattooed across head
Miserable Failure T-shirt - George W. Bush
Kerry sucks (too) - T-shirt"

In order to stay in business and continue advertising on Google we are moving all of our political merchandise to a separate website located at: FashionCriminal.com. If you find any offensive or negative merchandise on this website, please contact us immediately at: billw@ekay.com and we will transfer the items to the other website asap.

I'd welcome a response from Google on this. Link to Y-Que home, Link to a gallery of the "banned," politically-oriented t-shirts. This isn't the first (or the last) AdWords-related conflict, and BoingBoing reader Brian Carnell points us to this article for background on related incidents. In other news, I saw a beat-up art car driving down Sunset Boulevard today with "SWITCH LIARS IN 2004 || VOTE KERRY" painted on the side.

Beatles Online Music Store In The Works
(with MSN?)
06/09/2004 08:46 AM
The Beatles have been one of the biggest holdouts in releasing their catalog for sale online, and the lack of such mega-hits as "Let it Be" and "Yesterday" has been cited as a major weakness for fledgling, Web-based music stores. Negotiators for the Beatles have talked with several companies, with a particular emphasis on Microsoft Corp's MSN, which is expected to open an Internet music store late this summer, people familiar with the talks told Reuters.
