9/11 attack preventable, says 9/11
commission chair Kean
12/18/2003 04:39 AM

CBS is quoting 9/11 commission chairman Kean, a former Republican governor of New Jersey, as saying about 9/11: As you read the report, you're going to have a pretty clear idea what wasn't done and what should have been done, ... This was not something that had to happen. ... There are people that, if I was doing the job, would certainly not be in the position they were in at that time because they failed. They simply failed. Perhaps the cover-up of the greatest American intelligence failure since Pearl Harbor, and of the fundamental incompetence of the Bush regime, is finally starting to unravel. Via Strangelove....

Remember that "Bond Age Beanbag chair" with chains, blog ged here yesterday? Oh, of course you do, pumpkin. Anyway, crafty BoingBoing reader Adam tips us off to the fact that the manufacturer's website includes a very poorly designed CMS feature that allows you to pass whatever text you fancy along to the image caption. Let's break this down. Here is the URL that links to details on the "Bond Age" beanbag chair from Jucci.com's homepage:

WL-16 Biped Wheel Chair Chair 12/02/2003 12:25 AM
NewScientist says that Japanese researchers have created the first two legged walking robot that can carry a person It's probably not correct to call it a wheel chair. The bipedal (two legged) chair called the WL-16 can walk smoothly even if the person in the chair shifts. The WL-16 has 12 actuators for going forward, backward, or side to side. The researchers hope to make the robot someday go up and down stairs (safely). This could be the new thing in (for lack of a better term) wheel chairs. However, if it were to step on your foot with it's big flat feet, you might tend to disagree.

Letter to Thomas Kean from Sibel Edmonds

Letter to Thomas Kean from Sibel Edmonds 08/02/2004 10:52 PM

On July 21 Jim Hough posted the transcript of a radio interview with Sibel Edmonds on AxisofLoic.

Jim Hogue
F ormer FBI Translator Sibel Edmonds Calls Current 9/11 Investigation InadequateINTRODUCTION: Sibel Edmonds and Behrooz Sarshar, beginning in December of 2001, began filing reports to their superiors at the FBI. These reports could lead to the collapse of a corrupt power structure that has a stranglehold on the very institutions that are obligated to control it. We cannot excuse these institutions, for while they fiddle, they pass death sentences on their own troops, and on the people of Afghanistan and Iraq.

On April 30th, Sibel Edmonds was my guest for 50 minutes on WGDR radio. What follows is an edited transcript of the interview. The editing is for the sake of a more readable piece.

Sibel Edmonds is a former FBI translator. She blew the whistle on the cover-up of intelligence that names some of the culprits who orchestrated the 9/11 attacks. These culprits are protected by the Justice Department, the State Department, the FBI, the White House and the Senate Judiciary Committee. They are foreign nationals and Americans. Ms. Edmonds is under two gag orders that forbid her to testify in court or mention the names of the people or the countries involved.

Aparently Edmonds has not been able to get this message out and has written a letter to Thomas Kean, the Chairman of the 9/11 Commission.
August 1, 2004

[...]

Dear Chairman Kean:

[snip]
Unfortunately, I find your report seriously flawed in its failure to address serious intelligence issues that I am aware of, which have been confirmed, and which as a witness to the commission, I made you aware of. Thus, I must assume that other serious issues that I am not aware of were in the same manner omitted from your report.
[snip]

Considering what is at stake, our national security, we are entitled to demand answers to unanswered questions, and to ask for clarification of issues that were ignored and/or omitted from the report.

I just che cked on Google News and there isn't much about this letter yet. I'm interested to see how the mass media picks this up and whether they dig into this accusation of a massive cover-up.

Thanks to Richard for the tip

Chair Fix

Chair Fix 06/18/2004 08:01 AM

chairfix.jpg image

Oh, this is lovely, for real. I have a dirty secret. I recently discovered Ikea, and as someone who has lived their life spending the bulk of their money on gadgets and software, it was pleasing to know that I could purchase crappy pressboard furniture that actually looked sort of stylish, if only for a week or two before it starts to flake away. So this Chair Fix is like Ikea but even better, because it not only is made of relatively sturdy plywood (I'm so hard to impress, aren't I?), but it can be assembled without that little hex wrench -- no screws, just a few whacks with a mallet. Plus you can paint the board to your liking before popping out the pieces, and then have a matching piece of artwork for your chair.

New Jakarta Chair

New Jakarta Chair 02/19/2004 10:16 AM

Apache TomcatYesterday, the Apache Software Foundation's Board of Directors appointed Geir Magnusson Jr. as the new chair of the Jakarta Project Management Committee.  I will remain on the PMC as well as the board.

Apache AntI was appointed as the chair just under three years ago after having served as the release manager for both Ant and Tomcat.  For the past year, I have been actively seeking a replacement.  The reason is simple: while at first, I had an itch that needed scratching and I sought to make a number of good things happen, over time those itches were scratched and my role evolved into one of stopping bad things from happening (project members misbehaving, addressing criticisms from within the foundation, etc.).  Focusing exclusively on defense is not a sustainable model: there also need to be a focus on building.

JavaIn addition to Geir and my world views being very much aligned, Geir is also the ASF's representative to the JSPA's SE/EE Executive Committee.
