Given their complexity and breadth of scope, typical Special Edition DVD releases often begin production well before their movie counterparts are complete. The head start gives DVD producers time to shoot and assemble bonus materials so that the disc is ready for store shelves several months after the movie opens in theaters. It shouldn't be a surprise, then, that DVD producer Robert Myer Burnett, a self-described "Mac boy all the way" since 1984, has been visiting the set of Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in New Zealand despite the fact that the film will be released in December 2005.

Glenn sez, "The mysterious O. Sharp has created a fantastic mash-up of Lord of the Rings, across three decades of movies, casting such big names as Humphrey Bogart and Marlene Dietrich. Tolkien's story is retold through a clever selection of overdubbed clips, and it works surprisingly well - it's an amusing tribute without being a parody, and I think it's certainly worth watching, even if it's only for Dooley Wilson sitting at his piano singing 'The Road Goes Ever On'." All hail Peter Jackson!

All hail Peter Jackson! 03/06/2004 01:49 AM
The money behind LOTR.

Miramax (owned by Disney) acquired the rights to The Lord of the Rings in 1996 but backed out of the deal in 1998 when Peter Jackson presented his budget. New Line Cinema (owned by Time Warner) stepped in and, under producer Barrie Osborne, stepped up to the plate. The three installments cost a toal of $270M to produce, and that's before marketing costs were added, not to mention the vaseline budget for the cameras filming Liv Tyler.

So, here's a toast to the money guys who said Yes to a director whose pitch must have gone something like this:

I'd like to film one of the most beloved and jealously protected literary properties in history.

I'd like to turn it into a sword-and-dwarves epic that will run somewhere between 9 and 11 hours.

I plan on shooting the largest, most complex battle scenes in history. And you can trust me based on my work in Heavenly Creatures.

We'll have to invent the most convincing CGI effects ever. In fact, the pivotal character will be made entirely of pixels. And you can trust me to bring true humanity to the art of digital acting based on my breakthrough work in Meet the Feebles.

A work of this scale will require marshalling 25,000 people over the course of several years. And I think I proved my ability to do so with Valley of the Stereos.

All hail Peter Jackson! But thanks, for once, to the money people who took the leap with him.

(I just blogged this at BlogCritics.org) We went to see Return of the King for the second time last night because our 13-year-old wanted to see it for his third time. My pre-VCR generation has trouble being entertained by a movie more than once, but there are exceptions. Lord of the Rings is one: Giant trolls, gargantuan elephants, catapults firing heads, fierce bad guys with faces made out of cookie dough, fire-tipped battering rams, stirring music, flying dragons, all in one scene. What more do you want in a movie? Even though it was my second time, I still...

A few days ago the new Matrix trailer was exciting. Ha, that was then! The trailer for the last movie in the Lord Of The Ring trilogy, Return of the King, is out! But why oh why is the "large" version a puny 480x208... If I'm going to play these three minutes in loop from now to Christmas, at least they could have made it in a higher resolution. Oh dear, it looks so cool. Where's that time machine...

So I might - note might - be in San Francisco again in about three week's time for a few nights, well actually only really two or three nights: 6th October, (maybe 8th October) and 9th October. I'd be going to an event in Sonoma on the 7th and 8th, so it would really be a flying visit. Does anyone have a convenient pile of floor or sofa that they might be prepared to lend me?

The Return Of Inventors

The Return Of Inventors 04/19/2004 03:09 PM
We all know the stories of the big name inventors from a century ago: Thomas Edisons, Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright Brothers (among, many many others) who all came up with unique new products. Over the last century, though, the role of the inventor has faded. Corporate research began to take over, and as such, the incentives skewed more towards focusing on innovation, rather than pure research and invention. However, now, a few companies are l ooking to swing the pendulum back the other way and bring back the age of the inventor. While the article makes it out to be something new, I'm not so sure that's accurate. A number of companies have tried to build themselves up around performing basic research, and many have struggled when that research failed to produce anything that could eventually be commercialized. Still, there's nothing wrong with encouraging invention - it just remains to be seen if it's really possible to create companies that are only focused on invention creation.

Return of the evil Net

Return of the evil Net 04/19/2004 01:38 PM
A News.com stor y today includes the quote from Rocky Anderson, Mayor of Salt Lake City, explaining his opposition to a municipal broadband network:

"I just don't see the social good in using taxpayer money to fund a network that provides more television and bandwidth for illegally downloading files," he said. "We should spend money on getting people fit, rather than deteriorating their quality of life with higher bandwidth to surf the Net."

This reminds me of the media coverage of the Internet around 1995.  A good percentage of the stories were focused on the dangers of online porn, privacy violations, and other threats the Net posed to truth and decency.  Sure, many of those issues were and are real.  But the tenor of the coverage suggested that the Net was a cesspool of filth, with harms exceeding its benefits.

I thought we were beyond that point.  But now we seem to be back to a similar discourse, with a twist.  The threat is that if you give people better connectivity, they'll use it to -- gasp -- share files!  This is another example of the criminalization of intellectual property law that I discussed two posts ago.  It's also the epitome of "throwing the baby out with the bathwater."
