Software for the Long Haul

Software for the Long Haul 07/14/2004 03:00 PM

Software That Lasts 200 Years This should ring true to Deane.

We need to start thinking about software in a way more like how we think about building bridges, dams, and sewers. What we build must last for generations without total rebuilding. This requires new thinking and new ways of organizing development. This is especially important for governments of all sizes as well as for established, ongoing businesses and institutions.

I admit to only skimming this article due to its length, but I'm sure the topic alone will spark some debate.

Los Angeles Times - WASHINGTON — As they settled into first class on American Airlines Flight 1438 from Chicago to Miami, they were supposed to be the last line of defense against terrorists — two highly trained U.S. air marshals who would sit unnoticed among the ordinary travelers but spring into action at the first sign of trouble.

Easy Come, Easy Go: Antigua Loses To US
Over Gambling

Easy Come, Easy Go: Antigua Loses To US
Over Gambling
04/07/2005 05:39 PM
Antigua has been battling the US for some time over the US's ban on online gambling. For many years, Antigua-based online casinos have run into problems with US laws. Two years ago, they went to the WTO claiming that the US ban on online gambling was a violation of a fair trade agreement the two nations had signed. It took the WTO almost exactly one year to point out that Antig ua was probably right. Of course, that wasn't acceptable for politicians who seem to think gambling is pure evil (except, of course, when it contributes to local tax coffers) -- so, while they planned to ignore the ruling completely (we're the US, we don't follow international rulings unless we agree with them), they did file an appeal, just for fun. It turns out that appeal worked, and the WTO has changed its mind, saying that banning gambling is a "moral issue," and therefore not subject to the fair trade agreement the two nations signed. So, sorry for all you online gambling addicts in the US, but you're back to breaking the law again.

Cometa's Wireless Back-Haul

Cometa's Wireless Back-Haul 11/05/2003 10:35 PM
Cometa discusses using WiMax as back-haul for its hotspots: This is not a bandwagon, it's a whole parade. I've heard from many folks in the industry that to densely deploy hotspots, wireless back-haul is the only reasonable course of action to conserve costs and maximize availability. With WiMax, it's possible that hotspots could have several Mbps, not just 1.5 or 512 Kbps. [via TechDirt]...

The ABSplus is a focused backup device that's easy to use, right out of the box, for backup and restoration, whereas Maxtor's cheaper and quieter drive is better for people who want extra disk space and more backup flexibility. Listening

Listening 12/06/2003 04:32 PM
I’ve written before about how listening is the most important skill a software developer can have.

One part of listening is the art of listening to feature requests.

Sometimes you get a feature request that describes a problem and proposes a solution that’s right on the mark: all you have to do is implement it. Sometimes you get a feature request that’s just about right, and with a little modification and back-and-forth you end up with the right thing.

And other times you get feature requests that describe a problem but propose a solution that’s not right. So the art here is listening to the problem. Sometimes it’s not always plain, you have to figure it out (often by asking questions of the person who made the request).

For example: think about how Exposé must have come about. Users made requests about ways to find a given window easily when you have a bunch of windows open. I imagine people suggested solutions like a system-wide window menu.

But what Apple did in this case was listen to the problem rather than specific solutions, and they came up with a solution that probably nobody had asked for—but that works wonderfully (and that, as a bonus, delights people who use it).

Not every feature request will be solved so dazzlingly. Most requests are for small problems with simple solutions. But it’s worth keeping Exposé in mind as an example of the art of listening.
