Spitzer in bl0ggerland

Spitzer in bl0ggerland 12/19/2004 03:24 PM
Eliot Spitzer, a guy I went to high school with, has been making headlines for a few years now. In a decade that has seen a retreat from progressive politics across the board, he's picked up the tools available to him as New York State attorney general and used them creatively and effectively to represent the interests of ordinary citizens. His investigations and prosecutions in the securities, mutual funds and insurance industries have exposed longstanding practices by which insiders profit at the expense of the public they ostensibly serve.

In a better world, the bodies that are supposed to be the watchdogs in these areas would be doing their jobs. Since they haven't been, Spitzer's investigations have represented the public's last line of defense.

I haven't agreed with every position Eliot has taken in his career (for instance, I don't support the death penalty), but there isn't any other Democratic politician out there right now who has been more effective at fighting the self-dealing, cronyism and plundering of the public good that characterize Bush-era business.

Today, in what was a long-expected move, Spitzer announced that he's running for governor of New York in 2006. And he announced it on a page labeled " Eliot's Blog" -- that appears to be a real, functional weblog. Welcome to the blogosphere, Eliot -- I think you'll like it.

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has for the first time captured the light from two known planets orbiting stars other than our Sun. The findings mark the beginning of a new age of planetary science, in which "extrasolar" planets can be directly measured and compared. "Spitzer has provided us with a powerful new tool for learning about the temperatures, atmospheres and orbits of planets hundreds of light-years from Earth," said Dr. Drake Deming of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., lead author of a new study on one of the planets. "It's fantastic," said Dr. David Charbonneau of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, Mass., lead author of a separate study on a different planet. "We've been hunting for this light for almost 10 years, ever since extrasolar planets were first discovered." The Deming paper appears today in Nature's online publication; the Charbonneau paper will be published in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal. So far, all confirmed extrasolar planets, including the two recently observed by Spitzer, have been discovered indirectly, mainly by the "wobble" technique and more recently, the "transit" technique. In the first method, a planet is detected by the gravitational tug it exerts on its parent star, which makes the star wobble. In the second, a planet's presence is inferred when it passes in front of its star, causing the star to dim, or blink. Both strategies use visible-light telescopes and indirectly reveal the mass and size of planets, respectively. In the new studies, Spitzer has directly observed the warm infrared glows of two previously detected "hot Jupiter" planets, designated HD 209458b and TrES-1. Hot Jupiters are extrasolar gas giants that zip closely around their parent stars. From their toasty orbits, they soak up ample starlight and shine brightly in infrared wavelengths.

Finance Spam Passing Drug Spam While
Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PM
The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

Spam: Microsoft to the rescue

Spam: Microsoft to the rescue 12/22/2003 12:40 PM
Microsoft takes spam seriously. Not only does the newly released version of Outlook -- part of the company's new Office System 2003 upgrade for the ubiquitous suite of Office desktop productivity tools -- contain a remarkably effective in-computer spam filter, but now it has joined forces with New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer in a lawsuit against one of the world's top spamming operations.

The company has been investigating spam operators for the last six months, according to sources, and recently announced that it was a plaintiff in six anti-spam lawsuits against operators that may be responsible for as much as 90 per cent of the spam tide ordinary users will have seen in recent months.
