I'm not going in to the Convention until 11am these days. I don't go out drinking afterwards, which means I'm asleep by 1am. So why am I so beat? Ok, aside from being old, fat and out of shape, why am I so beat? Crowds are exhausting. Trying to be alert is exhausting. Sitting in one place is exhausting. Being spoken at is exhausting. Being snarky is exhausting. Being exhausted is exhausting. I'm thinking of covering the speeches tonight by coming home and watching them on C-SPAN. I can't hear what the speakers are saying when I'm in the Fleet...

The Difference Between What You Want To

The Difference Between What You Want To
Happen And What's Happening
12/29/2003 01:44 PM
We've writt en about Magnatunes and the Creative Commons a few times before, so yet another article on Magnatunes and the Creative Commons isn't all that interesting. However, this one makes a very good point which is worth repeating. The article asks, if people can get their music for free, why would they bother paying for CDs. The response, which Magnatunes founder basically tells them, is that they're asking the wrong question. People are already downloading music for free, and thus, the recording industry needs to figure out a way to adjust to that reality. The original question (what happens if people can get their music for free?) is like asking "but, what happens to buggy makers when automobiles are around?" The answer seems obvious to everyone, except those involved in the recording industry: they adapt or die. The recording industry is so focused on what they want to happen, that they've missed what's actually happening. The article also suggests that, so far, Magnatunes is doing quite well, and has the potential to be a viable longterm business - based on the idea of giving away music as a promotional good.

The Bourne What's-Happening-acy redux 08/27/2004 01:37 PM
I know I've already blogged about how confusing I found The Bourne Supremacy, but here's an email (slightly edited) I sent to Sam Allis at the Boston Globe today in response to his "Critic's Notebook" that luxuriated in that movie racking up bigger grosses than either Collateral or The Manchurian Candidate, two movies he considers to be smug, predictable, and coasting on their star power: Sam, I enjoyed your piece today and am glad to see Damon get the credit he deserves. But one thing you said irked me enough to write to you, primarily because I just can't...

03/06/2004 01:55 AM

Nearly one half of American internet users have contributed digital content to cyberculture, according to a new study from the Pew Internet and American Life project .

According to "Content Creation Online" :

  • 21% of Internet users say they have posted photographs to Web sites.
  • 20% say they have allowed others to download music or video files from their computers.
  • 17% have posted written material on Web sites.
  • 13% maintain their own Web sites.
  • 10% have posted comments to an online newsgroup.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most active demographic group is those under 25.

Genocide is happening today in Sudan

Genocide is happening today in Sudan 06/23/2004 03:18 AM
Kudos to Senators McCain and Dewine, who published an op-ed in the Washington Post today calling for action to stop the genocide that is happening in Sudan. The U.N. Security Council should demand that the Sudanese government immediately stop all violence against civilians, disarm and disband its militias, allow full humanitarian access, and let displaced persons return home. Should the government refuse to reverse course, its leadership should face targeted multilateral sanctions and visa bans. Peacekeeping troops should be deployed to Darfur to protect civilians and expedite the delivery of humanitarian aid, and we should encourage African, European and Arab countries to contribute to these forces. The United States must stand ready to do what it can to stop the massacres. In addition to pushing the U.N. Security Council to act, we should provide financial and logistical support to countries willing to provide peacekeeping forces. The United States should initiate its own targeted sanctions against the Janjaweed and government leaders, and consider other ways we can increase pressure on the government. We must also continue to tell the world about the murderous activities in which these leaders are engaged, and make clear to all that this behavior is totally unacceptable. For all my anger at Bush's War on Iraq, this is a much more important issue. A lot more people are going to die in the Sudan if the world doesn't take action now....
