Blosxom excerpts

Blosxom excerpts 03/08/2004 11:23 PM
My weblog software's design is based on blosxom's, with entries stored in the familiar title followed by body format.  On my longer entries, such as this one, the first element in the body is a div tag with a class of excerpt, something that I parse out with a set of regular expressions.  This approach can be implemented in blosxom as a plugin ...

iRiver H10 Review Excerpts 12/22/2004 01:36 AM

iriver_h10rev.jpg imageThe first review I've seen of the iRiver H10 has popped up at Club iRiver, a site which, for all its positives, happens to be in Korean. For those of us that don't speak that tongue, Mistic River has excerpted a few of the highlights from the review, including word that the front area of the H10 is "nearly about the size of a business card." I can get with that, especially with a lovely color screen.

Google Book

Google Book 06/16/2002 11:50 AM
via Rael Dornfest we learn that Tara Calishan is writing a book on Google: As most of you know, I write stuff. And soon I'll be helping put together a book on search engines. Now that the Google API has been released, books on search engines are much more than "use this search technique" (though those are important too.) Now people can put programs together that do Cool Search Things. If you know of a cool Google technique -- an interesting use of the API, a search trick you think is nifty -- send it in. (I already know about Googlewhacks, Googlematic, Google Smackdown, and Google results by e-mail!) ALSO, if you have a GOOGLE WISH -- the thought, "Wow, I wish I could do X with Google," send that in too. I might be able to help make your Google Wish come true!Aww, I wanted to write that book. Anyway, keep sending in your cool Google tools, techniques and wishes. Thanks!

Online Google Book 12/10/2003 11:29 AM
Tony Perkins at AlwaysOn is writing a book online about Google, soliciting ideas, information and comments from readers: The goal is to finish the book in the next 60 days, speed-produce it, and get it to market before the Google IPO, to complement the company's red herring prospectus. Interesting project....

Google and Search Inside the Book

Google and Search Inside the Book 10/30/2003 10:22 AM
You probably know by now that Amazon has released the first of its A9 search offerings: Search Inside the Book. (If you don't, basically when you search on Amazon it searches the full text of thousands of books, and points you not only to the book, but to scanned copies of all the pages that match your search.) So what should Google do? This is a perfect time to cut a deal with Amazon: Amazon lets them index the text of all these books, and in return, Google sends tons of customers to Amazon's door. Putting the books in the search results wouldn't be any different than the search results already provided by Amazon, so there wouldn't be any copyright or lost-sales problems. Despite the amazingness of the Web, there's still some stuff you can find only in books. Google wouldn't be living up to their mission (to organize all the world's information) if they passed up this amazing opportunity....

Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches

Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches 12/17/2003 08:22 PM
You just can't stop Google, it seems. Last week they were adding features like the ability to track your FedEx packages, and now they've launched the beta test of their book search capabilities. While, this is clearly something of a response to Amazon's famed search inside the book feature, the end result isn't quite there. While there had been rumors that Google was looking to impleme nt a similar service, what they just (very quietly) launched is much simpler. Basically, they've just stored book flap info, and mixed it in with the regular search results (though, as the article points out, it doesn't show up that high on most searches). However, if you find one, it links to a page within Google that includes the info from the inside flap of the book, a few simple facts about the book and links to buy the book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million (they haven't even added in pricing info yet). While they don't have affiliate codes to make money off of those links, I imagine it wouldn't be difficult to add. The page does have their typical contextual Adwords advertising, though - increasing their inventory.
