Scaled Composites Breaks Sound Barrier 12/18/2003 03:25 AM
Scaled Composite's Spaceship One flew earlier today. They lit the hybrid rocket motor underneath it, flew at more than the speed of sound, climbed to about 68,000 feet, tested the 'feathered' configuration for descent, and landed back at the airport with only a minor wing scrape when one of the landing gears retracted.  Take a peek at their news release if you have any interest at all in the X-Prize or opening the space frontier for us all.   For those of us trying to open the space frontier, this is big news.  It's hard to explain just how long we have all been working on this kind of technology and just how much we want at least one of us to succeed.

VC Funded Companies Doing Well... But

VC Funded Companies Doing Well... But
Will They Keep Doing So?
07/20/2004 06:09 PM
While the VCs are whining about how much money they have, the companies they've put that money into are apparently helping to drive the economy forward. A new study has shown that venture backed companies have done much better during the downturn than non-venture backed companies, and actually added jobs during the period (well, what else were they going to do with all that VC money?). It's interesting to compare this to a different study that came out today, however, saying that most entrepreneurs aren't planning on hiring many new people over the next few years. You might be able to explain away the discrepancy by saying non-venture backed entrepreneurs are less likely to hire. That would make sense, since many non-VC backed entrepreneurial companies are small businesses that never need to hire many people. Still, the article seems to suggest they're talking about venture backed companies (many of whom are complaining they can't get cash out of VCs) in which case you could still explain away the difference by pointing out it's not a matter of how many companies are adding employees, but how many employees are added in total. If you have one company that adds 10,000 employees and ninety-nine that have only one employee and go out of business, a bunch of jobs are added even if most startups aren't involved.

Ken Brown's corporate-funded FUD

Ken Brown's corporate-funded FUD 05/25/2004 10:29 AM
Ken Brown's forthcoming book, published by the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution, is embarrassingly mistitled Samizdat: And Other Issues Regarding the 'Source' Of Open Source Code. No doubt you've heard of it by now, although more than likely you've only heard Andy Tanenbaum and others respond to it more than anything else. It's basically the world's largest troll, seasoned with more than a hint of flamebait. In the history of publishing there has never been a less scrupulous work than this book. It's a stinging insult to real books and genuine authors everywhere, harming the credibility of all of us who write for a living.

Wow: thi s one from Damien Barret:

"Color me not surprised. It appears that Microsoft is paying SCO to file all those ridiculous lawsuits against the users of Linux. I've seen low before, but this is pretty damn low. Scumsucking low."

I have no idea if any of that is true, but, it's truly sad that I could easily believe it's true... that's how much I trust the Microsoft corporate brand.

Canadian-funded research should be
available to Canadians

Canadian-funded research should be
available to Canadians
09/27/2004 07:12 AM
Cory Doctorow: Writing in the Toronto Star, Michael Geist argues that when Canada gives public money to scientific researchers, that it should require that the research be made available to the public through open-content publishing, rather than locked up in expensive journals that require Canadians to buy the research they've already paid for.
Late last month, a group of Nobel prize winners in the United States (which faces the same dilemma) issued a public letter calling on their government to link public research funding with public dissemination of the results. Canada should jump at the chance to adopt a similar model that would tie free, public dissemination to all publicly funded research. Such an approach would still leave room to commercialize the research results, while providing Canadians with an unprecedented innovation opportunity and a more immediate return on its research granting investment.

Cory Doctorow: Joshua Schachter, who created the link-sharing service del.icio.us, has taken on some investment capital so he can work on del.icio.us full time. Congrats, Joshua!
I am excited to finally be able to devote all of my energy to working on and improving this site, and I'll also be able to acquire some much-needed infrastructure.

I'm still in charge of the site and still committed to making it as good as it can be.
