"Me, I fart loud - I can't be a hypocrite. I get these parts,
but I never get to play 'em because I fart out loud. Why can't we all
fart together? Let thy arse make wind!"
It is my
pleasure<
/a> to introduce
you
to the late,
great Timothy Carey, possibly the
weird
est of all Hollywood character actors. A follower of
S
alvador Dalí and
Le Pétomane,
Carey was a
Method actor who
was pals with
John
Cassavetes, a muse of sorts for
Stanley Kubrick,
alleged discoverer of both
Frank
Zappa and
Ray
Dennis Steckler, and one of the
dedicatees of
Reservoir Dogs. Not only that, he wrote, directed, and
starred in one of the all-time
strangest American
films,
The World's Greatest Sinner, and wrote and directed
the world's only Dalí-inspired play about death by
flatulence.
Against all odds, Timothy Carey has a
website, and if you're interested,
you can
buy his
movies, posters, and other odds 'n' ends (warning: doesn't appear
to have been updated particularly recently).
Truly, in the
words of his
tombstone,
"A Super Nova of Original Thespian Talent."
Herring fart
Herring fart
11/05/2003 03:00 AMIt turns out that herring fart. It's not digestive gas, though.
Scientists call it a Fast Repetitive Tick: a FRT.
Firstly, when more herring are in a tank, the researchers record more
FRTs per fish. Secondly, the herring are only noisy after dark,
indicating that the sounds might allow the fish to locate one another
when they cannot be seen. Thirdly, the biologists know that herrings
can hear sounds of this frequency, while most fish cannot. This would
allow them to communicate by FRT without alerting predators to their
presence.

Physicians and
scientists around the world even go as far as to state that smoking
leads to premature death. Don’t we all know someone who smokes
constantly, even heavily, yet is still living — or has lived — to
the mature age of eighty, ninety, and older? Furthermore, the MDs and
PhDs state that smoking causes cancer and emphysema. If this diagnosis
were definitive, wouldn’t these afflictions affect all smokers
equally, rather than the small percentage that it actually does
affect?

11/12/2003 01:15 PMIn case you were wondering, it's not a good idea to scan your social
security card with a sheet feeder. Flatbeds work much better for these
little buggers. Lucky for me, I happened to have a metal doohickey
(from the computer repair kit my parents gave me a couple of years
ago). After a few minutes of sheer terror... er, incomprensible
mayhem... I finally jarred that tiger loose. My night would have been

Robot Dog Fart Causes Airport Crisis
Robot Dog Fart Causes Airport Crisis
10/30/2003 11:57 PMAccording to a UPI
story, there was a security scare at a Norfolk, Viriginia airport
when a British man attempted to pass through a security check point
with
his robot dog. The robot dog farted at an inopportune time, leading
security experts to conclude it was a bomb. At this point, "Dave
Rogerson, told the BBC he watched incredulously as FBI agents took a
series of swabs from the mechanical toy's rear end." The whole thing
sounds pretty unlikely but there actually is (or was) a toy robot dog
that farts, the Tekno L1 Robot
Puppy. The toy is no longer made so if you want to buy one in
anticipation of your next international trip, you'll need to find one
on
eBay.
Also worth noting is that one of
the entries in the Viridian Biofuture Robot Dog Design Contest, also
boasted this feature.

Gregory Dicum's book "Window
Seat: Reading the Landscape from the Air" sounds like a brilliant
idea:
"Broken down by region, this unusual guide features 70
aerial photographs; a fold-out map of North America showing major
flight paths; profiles of each region covering its landforms,
waterways, and cities; tips on spotting major sights, such as the
Northern Lights, the Grand Canyon, and Disney World; tips on spotting
not-so-major sights such as prisons, mines, and Interstates; and
straightforward, friendly text on cloud shapes, weather patterns, the
continent's history, and more."
Did you know that the patterns of the streets in subdivisions lets you
know when they were built? Or that the round ponds all over Florida
are sinkholes? With Window Seat at your side, you'll learn these
things. Keep it to yourself though--the person sitting next to you
doesn't want to hear it.

about this AK Rocker chair. Does anyone really need to use XtreMe
Rocking Chairz in the "sand, snow or dirt?" It looks comfortable
enough, I guess, but it would be sort of embarrassing to have one of
these sitting around in your nice living room. They're cheap enough,
at around $80 (or less on eBay, it seems), to consider getting a
couple to play Gran Turismo 4 when it hits the streets.
Clearly, though, they should have called them "Rockaro" seats.

Pre-Filtering The Spam
Pre-Filtering The Spam
06/29/2004 03:54 PMMy anti-spam system now uses a variety of server and client side
filters to help keep the damn stuff out of the inbox. Now, some are
suggesting an even earlier level "pre-filter" for spam. HP Labs has
made a fairly simple discovery that even without
various
email authentication systems, it's pretty easy to get a quick
determination as to whether or not an email is spam. The system they
developed looks at whether or not the server sending you the email
normally sends good emails or sends spam. With that one
determination, they can
properly pre-classify emails at a pretty high success
rate. It's not a replacement for a spam filter at all. They know
it's not that good. However, what it can do is do a pre-sort for
prioritization purposes -- so that good emails tend to make it through
the real spam filters faster. In a number of ways, it's pretty sad
that we now need "quality of service" setups for our email.

12/19/2004 03:46 PMIn this edition of Science.Ars, Fred Locklear provides an update on
NASA goings-on. Sean O'Keefe is stepping down as Administrator of
NASA. How will this affect the space program?
Additionally, Science.Ars looks at the effects of laptop use on
male fertility. A recent study made headlines by claiming that
frequent laptop use in the lap could lead to lowered fertility.
While the laptops did cause a rise in scrotal
temperature, it is not know how much this affects short term/long term
sperm quality and fertility and researchers plan to measure these
effects in future studies. For laptop users with worries about
fertility problems... I wonder if there would be market for
liquid-cooled briefs?
All that and more in this week's Science.Ars.

solution for Linux mail servers that provides proactive protection
for message traffic at the email server level filtering viruses and
spam. Both sent and received messages are scanned in real-time,
avoiding possible infections and preventing anyone from sending an
infected message. It claims a 100% detection rate for all viruses in
the wild through its powerful scanning engines, which are certified
by the most prestigious testing labs.
Changes:
The sudo dependency has been removed by bundling
bdsu, a stripped down version of sudo. The
antispam filter has support for image-based spam
messages. Some minor threading and statistics bugs
have been fixed. The "bd" script has been
rewritten to be fully POSIX compliant and to use
