05/12/2004 04:02 AMEver wonder why the Bush administration couldn't find an Arabic
speaker to be Viceroy of Baghdad, but instead was stuck with
monologuists like Garner and Bremer? You would think that it would
make sense for the American ruler of Iraq to be able to speak to the
Iraqis in their own language. While they may not be plentiful in the
United States, there are over 400 Arabic speakers in the State
Department, plus a number at the Pentagon and the CIA, as well as
former officials from the Reagan and Bush administrators. Maybe
because they all thought occupying Iraq was nuts? Certainly the best
known ones, like Ambassador Chas Freeman, did. Look at what they were
getting into: Has any official United States policy in recent memory
been as feckless as the Bush administration's for postwar Iraq? Can
we, for a moment, recall just some of the assumptions that the
administration announced or embraced? That Americans would be welcomed
as liberators? That we could secure the nation with a force of a
little more than 100,000 troops? That Iraqi oil revenue would be such
that the occupation would pay for itself? That, in accord with our
assumptions on troop requirements and postwar financing, we didn't
really need the kind of international cooperation that the nation had
historically sought for this kind of venture? That, in accord with the
same assumptions, there was no reason not to enact more massive tax
cuts for the rich? With the revelations that have emerged of the
degradation and torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison, it's become
particularly clear that the administration gave no real thought to the
challenges at the very heart of occupying another country. Put it all
the assumptions together, as Harold Meyerson did in his brilliant
editorial and the neocon fantasy does seem nuts, doesn't it? The sad
thing is, there aren't any real surprises here. Almost everyone of the
people who knew anything about the Arab world said these assumptions
were nuts before Bush started his war on Iraq. But that wasn't the
answer that Bush wanted. Instead, he turned to people like Prince of
Darkness Richard Perle and Douglas Feith (former registered lobbyists
for Israel and Turkey), who gave him the answers he wanted to hear.
What is the end result? I turn to Meyerson again: the United States,
and the entire Western world, are engaged in a...

One IDE to Rule Them All?
One IDE to Rule Them All?
12/30/2004 02:48 AMDon Box has an interesting set of
Predictions for 2005. Every one of them is thought-provoking and
well-framed. There is one, though, that I have to push back on: the
surface prediction (#2) is that “Sun will embrace Eclipse”. The
deeper issue here pops up a sentence later, when Don talks about
“unifying on a common tool platform”. Well, as I (and everyone
else who attended) learned at the “IDE Shootout” event at the last
Java One, the Java IDE landscape is like a messy, vigorous, noisy,
public marketplace. Each of the big IDEs is here for the long haul;
and it’s not just Eclipse and NetBeans. Don’t forget Emacs,
JDeveloper, and the IDE with the most fanatical fans of all, IntelliJ
IDEA. Unlike the Windows world, where Visual Studio is all that really
matters, what we have here is an ecosystem, a market, a place where
competition and evolution happen. There is absolutely zero chance that
the Java world will ever “unify on a common tool platform”. Which
is A Good Thing.

12/24/2004 01:03 PM Instant802 offers manufacturers mass-profile possibility for access
points: Instant802 makes the software for service providers and
manufacturers that runs their APs. For instance, the Gateway AP series
that I have praised in the past uses Instant802 firmware. They've
released an Enterprise Managed AP (EMAP) platform which allows many
APs to be configured as if they were a single AP. This is a
fascinating way to sidestep large-scale management through a cluster
profile, because the platform handles load balancing, beacon
assignment (up to four SSID names per AP), and channel selection. Call
it a plug-and-play enterprise solution....
Who Should Rule The Internet?
Who Should Rule The Internet?
12/17/2003 03:49 AMThe well known libertarian think tank, the Cato Institute is looking
at the question of
whether or not the UN
should gain control over the internet. This was the big question
last week at the United Nations World Summit on the Information
Society. The fear is that giving control over the UN would end up
with rules that went against everything that made the internet
successful. Trying to appease every country would mean that none
would end up being particularly happy. Not surprisingly, the folks at
Cato support leaving the internet as open as possible, and suggest
that to solve the "biggest" problem about jurisdiction, you just use
the location of origin.

Golden Rule before Cluetrain
Golden Rule before Cluetrain
07/07/2004 07:52 AM
Yesterday, an absolutely gorgeous NY summer day, I took my walk
with my iPod and Doc Searls.
There were two parts to the conversatio
n, the first, a narrative biography about Doc, which was very
useful, I didn't know how he came to be in Silicon Valley for example.
The second half was fairly predictable Doc hype, open source and
Microsoft ad infinitum, as if that was all there was in the software
world, with a new rant about how SCO was screwing with Doc's life,
something I could relate to, because my own life is being screwed
with.
A short comment stuck with me. Doc said of fellow Cluetrainer,
Chris Locke and his alter-id, Rageboy: "The most out-there and
purposely offensive blog. He's a genius, it's brilliant stuff. It's
hostile." Then he laughs.
I've heard him say this before, and I've also heard David
Weinberger say the same thing. They find Locke's cruelty amusing. I
agree that Locke's site is purposely offensive, I might go a little
further, but I wonder if Searls and Weinberger would like it so much
if they were the targets?
Locke directs his hostility at people. I watched as he
humiliated an old girlfriend. How does he get away with this? I
wondered. People still seem to be his friend. I didn't say anything
for fear that he'd go after me. Then he did. How did I offend him? I
honestly don't know.
The Golden Rule comes before The Cluetrain Manifesto. If you
aren't trying to treat people as you would like to be treated,
you can't possibly do good, imho. You guys have taken a big detour, I
think you've lost your way. When I first read the Cluetrain I was
cheering, it was exciting. Now it's degraded and sick. Time for an
intervention. Wake up guys, people matter. I still believe you're
better than this. Much.
