Strange but punk. Green Day and iTunes Music Store
are releasing a special set of CD-Rs pre-imprinted with the logos from

burn it onto a proper disc - sound quality aside, no one would be the
wiser.
Wouldn't it be nice if a band were to release their redbook CDs
along with a blank CD-R for copying and giving to your friends? Just
sort of a, "We don't mind if you want to make a copy or two. Thanks
for purchasing." I'm not holding my breath (my blood atenuators do not

01/18/2004 12:27 AMHad my first JetBlue experience flying from JFK to BVT yesterday
evening, aboard a packed A320 that was late departing because they

listening to the crew crack jokes. It didn't suck.

funny to read this local report about a fellow from the area who was

hometown. Remember that this is local coverage, and the reporter makes
the guy sound like someone who has been to the mountain and returns
with these 15...I mean, 10 commandments. The idea is great, and it's
in the pre-preliminary stages to put in a very inexpensive cloud of
Wi-Fi across downtown Bowling Green. The proposal hasn't been publicly
circulated and sounds full of questions about how to make it go; the
technical issues are not a problem, however. [via a link at GigaOm]...

« Finns enjoying a walk out on the grasshopper-free ice in -20C
weather thanks to St. Urho. »
Today is St. Patrick's Day but yesterday, yesterday was St. Urho's
Day, both of which are goofy folklore that have metamorphosed into
back-to-back drinking holidays. The only Urho people think of in
Finland is the former president, Urho Kekkonen, not the guy who
apparently drove the grasshoppers out of Finland in mid-winter and
saved the grape harvest. I asked a bunch of people about St. Urho and
every one said, "Kekkonen?". There's a statue of Urho in Minnesota
where the dedication plate reads:
THE LEGEND OF ST. URHO
One of the lesser known, but extraordinary legends of ages past is
the legend of St. Urho-Patron Saint of the Finnish vinyard workers.
Before the last glacial period wild grapes grew with abundance in
the area now known as Finland. Archeologists have uncovered evidence
of this scratched on the thigh bones of the gieant bears that once
roamed northern Europe. The wild grapes were threatened by a plague of
grasshoppers until St. Urho banished the lot of them with a few
selected Finnish words.
In memory of this impressive demonstration of the Finnish language,
Finnish people celebrate on March 16, the day before St. Patrick's
day. It tends to serve as a reminder that St. Pat's day is just around
the corner and is thus celebrated by squares at sunrise on March 16.
Finnish women and children dressed in royal purple and nile green
gather around the shores of the many lakes in Finland and chant what
St. Urho chanted many years ago.
"HEINASIRKKA, HEINASIRKKA, MENETAALTA HIITEEN."
(Translated: "GRASSHOPPER, GRASSHOPPER, GO AWAY!")
Adult male, (people, not grasshoppers) dressed in green costumes
gather on the hills overlooking the lakes, listen to the chant and
then kicking out like grasshoppers, they slowly disappear to change
costumes from green to purple. The celebration ends with singing and
dancing polkas and schottisches and drinking grape juice, though these
activities may occur in varying sequences. Color for the day is royal
purple and nile green.
SULO HAVUMAKI
The only thing that's green and purple around this time of year is
the vomit on the sidewalks. Honest. I found a paper online Ethnic Symbols: Their Role in Maintaining and Constructing
Finnish American where the Finnish author tries in earnest
to figure out what the American Finns are on about but fails.
Lastly, I will point out that the item St. Urho was ranked as the
most controversial item on this list. St. Urho is the fictional Saint
of the Finnish Americans who supposedly stopped an invasion of
grasshoppers. It seems that there is great debate as to whether St.
Urho should be considered a true symbol of Finnishness.
Finnishness? The only Urho these people think of is Kekkonen and he
has a fountain. Not to mention where are the vinyards in Finland? In
March? This has Hallmark Drinking Holiday written all over it. It is
Finnish only in the 'hey, it's cold out, let's go drinking' aspect. :)
Another Finn in the US critques the whole
St. Urho's thing which is pretty funny. There are also St.
Urho's kitsch for those who really embrace the holiday. I nearly
wet my pants reading the Ode to St. Urho which sounds more like some
Irish brogue gone wrong more than Finnglish...
Ooksi kooksi coolama vee
Santia Urho is ta poy for me!
He sase out ta hoppers as pig as pirds.
Neffer peefor haff I hurd tose words!
He reely tolt tose pugs of kreen
Braffest Finn I effer seen
Some celebrate for St. Pat unt hiss nakes
He kot tall and trong from feelia sour
Unt ate kala moyakka effery hour.
Tat's why tat kuy could sase toes peetles
What krew as thick as chack bine neetles.
So let's give a cheer in hower pest vay
On Sixteenth of March, St. Urho's Tay.
And then, and then, and then...then there is the Urho carol which is
tragic at best....
Urho Boy
(To the tune of Jingle Bells)
Dashing ‘cross the yard
With a pitchfork in one hand,
Urho sees his foe
Munching all his land.
Grapes both green and red
Falling from the vine,
Urho has to get those hoppers
Or there will be no wine.
Oh, Urho boy, Urho boy,
The bravest that we’ve seen
Use the sisu that you’ve got
To get those bugs of green.
Hey!
Urho boy, Urho boy,
Our future’s in your hands.
Stop those hoppers in their tracks
And save our mother land!
So, no, St. Urho's isn't Finnish, not in the least, but drinking
holidays are always welcome around here so in that respect it might be
adopted someday. And, for those Americans with their pictures taken in
front of St. Urho's pub, I regret to inform you that it was named for
Kekkonen. :)
Happy St. Patrick's Day :)

Green games
Green games
12/22/2004 01:26 AMWith Spymac and its members taking a step towards a greener planet we
see "green" issues emerging in all areas in life. The latest domain
to see a trend toward the environment is gaming.
Veggie Games Inc. is an independent studio based in Vancouver, BC that
focuses on creating games that promote kindness and compassion towards
animals and the environment. President and founder, Johnathan
Skinner, "was inspired to use his skill of making video games as a
form of activism... speaking up for the animals that can't speak for
themselves."
With games that teach "people how to respect the environment, the
animals, and each other," Veggie Games can introduce gamers to animal
rights and environmental issues while still being entertained.
The company released the first-ever activism-based animal rights
themed video game, Steer Madness earlier this month. The game
features a cow that rescues lab animals and converts residents of the
city to a vegetarian diet.
Steer Madness, along with others such as Chris Crawford's Macintosh
game, Balance of the Planet, help bring environmental issues and
educational tools to entertainment. According to Richard O. Mann,
"if managing and understanding the delicate balance of the ecological
and economic forces that hold our beloved mother earth together
appeals to you, you're in for hours of fascination" while playing
Balance of the Planet.
Spymac caught up with Veggie Games' Johnathan Skinner to find out more
about the game and the company's role in activism:
How do you think activist video games can change people's actions?
Activist video games can open people's eyes to the reasons someone
would be an activist, and possibly influence decisions they make
surrounding the issues involved.
How does purchasing Steer madness over other games help out the
environment?
The packaging for Steer Madness is a lot less wasteful then most other
video games. The boxes that games come in have no purpose other than
trying to look impressive on store shelves and they end up just
getting thrown away. Steer Madness doesn't come in a box, instead it
comes in a jewel case like a music CD.
When we ship orders for the game that are placed through our website,
we re-use packing materials whenever possible, and all other supplies
are purchased locally using the highest percentage recycled content
available. We are working on setting up an option where you can
purchase a downloadable version of the game that installs directly to
your computer so there won't be any packaging or shipping materials
used at all.
Is this the type of game that would interest children in hopes of
having the omnivores converted?
I don't know if the game alone could cause people to become
vegetarian, but it's definitely a nudge in that direction. If nothing
else it will probably get people to grab a veggie burger a little more
often.
Does Steer Madness promote veganism?
Steer Madness does bring up the reasons behind being vegan, but in a
non-confrontational way. It's a bit like watching a TV show about
vegan activists going about their lives and doing what they do, and if
it says something that speaks to the viewer then they might adapt some
of it into their lifestyle, but if not then it's still great
entertainment.
In what way does this game or your company promote environmental
responsibility?
In Steer Madness the main mode of transportation is by bicycle, and
there is a billboard in the game that reads, "Ride your bike for clean
air." In one mission the main character is shocked and appauled when
he sees his girlfriend in a car, but when he finds out that she's only
borrowing it from a friend and that it's electric then he feels better
about it.
Veggie Games donates a percentage of its profits to organizations that
help protect animals and the environment.

Beyond the Green Zone
Beyond the Green Zone
05/19/2004 12:11 AMJeff
Jarvis echoes Howard Kurtz's
observation that most U.S. reporters in Iraq aren't daring to
venture outside the Green Zone. Given the chaos there and the danger
of being taken hostage or worse, it's hard to second-guess the
decisions these journalists are making. But there's no question we
won't get the full picture from Iraq this way.
Jarvis suggests we read Iraqi bloggers (and provides a set of links
to them). That's certainly good advice.
But it's also worth pointing out that Salon's coverage from Iraq
was not "embedded" during the invasion and is not embedded in the
Green Zone today. Our correspondent Philli
p Robertson has been courageously, and independently, traveling
the country, offering e
yewitness accounts from the siege of Najaf and Kufa, escaping a
thankfully brief detainment by Moqtada al-Sadr's Al-Mehdi Army, and
providing another angle on the Abu Ghraib abuses.
Phillip is a fine writer and a great observer. If you want to read
reporting that's not hunkered down behind the barricades, here
it is.
