Research company speculates Apple may
buy TiVo
01/03/2005 12:03 PM
Apple Computer may acquire TiVo during 2005 in a bid to become a major player in the digital home, suggests a new report by Forrester Research. "The Battle For The Digital Home," a new report from Forrester Research, Inc., evaluates ten industries, including consumer electronics, PC, content, games, telecommunications, and cable, that are vying for control of the digital home. It concludes that some industries are better positioned for success, but all must focus on capturing and controlling new revenue streams through key cross-industry partnerships and acquisitions. Because the digital home power positions traverse industry lines, Forrester sees many partnerships forming during the next three years. Potential digital home alliances include: Apple's acquisition of TiVo, providing Apple with a service platform for TV and video on-demand; a joint venture between the NFL and FOX to create an immersive experience where sports fans can choose viewer-selected camera angles and split-screen content; Sony's acquisition of Clear Channel to combine Sony's music and devices business with Clear Channel's radio stations to offer personalized time-shifted digital radio; Google's acquisition of TV Guide's interactive program guide allows it to deliver a best-in-class personalized media application – video search; a partnership between Microsoft and BellSouth, Verizon, and SBC to provide an operating platform for IPTV, and finally, Disney's acquisition of Electronic Arts.

04/23/2004 08:23 PM
The Wi-Fi Alliance, the group that certifies Wi-Fi equipment, moves its headquarters from Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas: The Wi-Fi Alliance is more a virtual organization with few staffers. The test labs it work with are under contract all over the place. A television station in Austin picks up the story and thinks that even though it will create no jobs in the Austin area, that there's a large impact involved. Sorry, folks, there won't be. That's not to put down Austin (don't mess with Texas, as you know). Austin has a variety of free, community, and for-fee groups and companies including Wayport and Austin Wireless City. Two BusinessWeek articles (via gooGuide): Google's Gaggle of Problems. 'sources say Yahoo has grown tired of Google.com's popularity and may soon cut its tie to the company. "The portals have started to get fed up. Over the last three years, Google has stolen 40% of the search market directly at the expense of AOL, MSN, and Yahoo," says Jason Kellerman, CEO of search-technology company LookSmart, which has a deal with MSN.' 'measurements by Web traffic tracker Nielsen NetRatings, AOL [which uses Google's results and ads] and Google.com together get six times the search traffic of Yahoo, the closest competitor.' Will Froogle Be a Google for Shoppers? "As a Google fanatic -- my wife claims I sometimes murmur Google in my sleep -- I was too excited to wait for the final release [of Froogle]. Alas, after some unscientific research and lots of experimenting with the beta version, I have to report that Froogle definitely isn't the best way to find bargains on the Net."...

Beyond Blue (BusinessWeek Online) 04/08/2005 06:16 PM
BusinessWeek Online - It was over a lunch in Cincinnati two years ago that IBM Chief Executive Samuel J. Palmisano got his first inkling of Big Blue's next act. Palmisano was talking business with A.G. Lafley, CEO of Procter & Gamble Co. , one of IBM's big customers. At one point, Lafley asked Palmisano to estimate how many of P&G's 100,000 employees it truly needed to keep on its payroll. When Palmisano didn't venture a guess, Lafley stunned him by saying that P&G might be able to get by with only a quarter of its workforce. ...

BusinessWeek Online - AT&T Wireless Services Inc. (NYSE:AWE - News) is anything but an industry darling. Dogged by mediocre customer-service ratings, the third largest of six national cellular service providers has seen subscriber growth slow to a snail's pace. The stock has plummeted 70% in four years -- though it has rebounded in recent months thanks to strong cash flow and takeover speculation. The latest financials are weak, too: On Jan. 22, the Seattle company reported a net loss of $84 million for the fourth quarter, on revenues of $3.9 billion.

Mating Calls (BusinessWeek Online) 08/06/2004 09:38 AM
BusinessWeek Online - Cell phones are indispensable when you're on the road. But back in the office, they mostly get in the way. They ring at odd times, and if you use a headset with your office phone, they're awkward to answer. They certainly do nothing to improve your efficiency. The best solution would be to make your cell phone and land line work together better instead of competing for your attention. I've been looking at three different types of gadgets that let you do just that. The caveat: You'll need particular phones or wireless providers to use them. ...

Protecting Yourself From A Housing Slump
(BusinessWeek Online)
12/28/2004 08:48 AM
BusinessWeek Online - In many U.S. cities, the housing market looks as extravagant and top-heavy as a Dr. Seuss castle. In metro New York, the median price of a single-family house is up 78% since 1999, according to the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight. The gains are even bigger in Miami (87%), Los Angeles (97%), and San Diego (115%). For years house prices in these markets have risen faster than family incomes. The trend made sense when mortgage interest rates were falling, but rates hit bottom in mid-2003 and they're likely to rise. Put it all together, says Yale University economist Robert J. ...

Robots Worming Through Your Colon? 06/17/2005 07:12 PM
A team of biologists and engineers at Case Western Reserve University has developed two flexible robotic devices that could make invasive medical procedures such as colonoscopies safer for patients and easier for doctors to administer. The first robotic device creates the locomotion which draws on an understanding of how slugs, leeches and earthworms traverse their environments and grasp objects. The device is constructed of three artificial muscules and looks like a nine-inch long hollow worm. Sequencing the muscles mimicking the undulating movement of slugs and worms propels the device forward. Also, a gripper device has been developed that mimics the way hungry California sea slugs grasp slippery seaweed. The gripper consists of a four-inch, ball-like device, surrounded by muscle-like actuators in the form of tubes or rings where one of the tubes contains a mouth that opens and closes. So how would you like one of these roaming through your colon?

P-P-P-Powerbook

P-P-P-Powerbook 05/13/2004 10:46 PM
An American Ebay seller realises a European bidder is trying to scam him out of a Powerbook (fake escrow site, hijacked ebay account), so he sends him something far better, a P-P-P-Powerbook! Now, for you non-techies here, a factory model p-p-p-powerbook weights half what it's competitors weigh, comes with an A4 screen, the latest in internet adventure software, zero boot time, a fullsize keyboard (often with Key RedundancyTM) and a state-of-the-art laser bluetooth mouse. This is technology. The seller posts to a forum and amongst the chatter people follow the package via the the Fedex tracking page and some even visit the delivery address (a barbershop/internet cafe) and take photos, video, and a seat for their hair cut. The duty tax on this particular p-p-p-powerbook is around £350 (paid for by the scammer) before he sees the package, and a few days later it's released by Customs as they watch in anticipation. A forum member arrives at the internet cafe, takes a seat and soon the package arrives. The scammer opens the box and there are angry raised voices heard. The barber doesn't understand what's wrong and asks... "Is it broken?"

More on 15" Powerbook screens... 11/12/2003 01:19 PM

This is probably well known by now, but according to a friend of mine who is still trying to work out whether to get the 12" or 15" Apple Powerbook, he's been advised by a man he talked to at a London Apple Centre that a 15" variety will take longer to be delivered because Apple have accepted there's a problem with the screen getting brighter spots on it. Apparently they've definitely ceased production while they look into it. This is probably extremely good news for those of us who have a Powerbook with this problem, and it might explain why I have still not received my return voucher, over a week and a half after I rang them up. I'll be checking up on this later, but I thought I should probably share the news. If anyone has more information on the subject, please feel free to add links in the comments.
