Research company speculates Apple may
buy TiVo
01/03/2005 12:03 PMApple Computer may acquire TiVo during 2005 in a bid to become a major
player in the digital home, suggests a new report by Forrester
Research.
"The Battle For The Digital Home," a new report from Forrester
Research, Inc., evaluates ten industries, including consumer
electronics, PC, content, games, telecommunications, and cable, that
are vying for control of the digital home. It concludes that some
industries are better positioned for success, but all must focus on
capturing and controlling new revenue streams through key
cross-industry partnerships and acquisitions.
Because the digital home power positions traverse industry lines,
Forrester sees many partnerships forming during the next three years.
Potential digital home alliances include: Apple's acquisition of TiVo,
providing Apple with a service platform for TV and video on-demand; a
joint venture between the NFL and FOX to create an immersive
experience where sports fans can choose viewer-selected camera angles
and split-screen content; Sony's acquisition of Clear Channel to
combine Sony's music and devices business with Clear Channel's radio
stations to offer personalized time-shifted digital radio; Google's
acquisition of TV Guide's interactive program guide allows it to
deliver a best-in-class personalized media application – video search;
a partnership between Microsoft and BellSouth, Verizon, and SBC to
provide an operating platform for IPTV, and finally, Disney's
acquisition of Electronic Arts.

will create no jobs in the Austin area, that there's a large impact

Big Blue's next act. Palmisano was talking business with A.G. Lafley,
CEO of Procter & Gamble Co. , one of IBM's big customers. At one

according to the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight. The

Robots Worming Through Your Colon?
06/17/2005 07:12 PMA team of biologists and engineers at Case
Western Reserve University has developed two flexible robotic devices
that could make
invasive medical procedures such as colonoscopies safer for patients
and easier for doctors to administer. The first robotic device
creates the locomotion which draws on an understanding of how slugs,
leeches and
earthworms traverse their environments and grasp objects. The
device is constructed of three artificial muscules and looks like a
nine-inch long hollow worm. Sequencing the muscles mimicking the
undulating movement of slugs and worms propels the device forward.
Also, a gripper device has been developed that mimics the way hungry
California sea slugs grasp slippery seaweed. The gripper consists of
a four-inch, ball-like device, surrounded by muscle-like actuators in
the form of tubes or rings where one of the tubes contains a mouth
that opens and closes. So how would you like one of these roaming
through your colon?

More on 15" Powerbook screens...
11/12/2003 01:19 PMThis is probably well known by now, but according to a friend of
mine who is still trying to work out whether to get the 12" or 15" Apple Powerbook, he's been
advised by a man he talked to at a London Apple Centre that a 15"
variety will take longer to be delivered because Apple have accepted
there's a problem with the screen getting brighter spots on it.
Apparently they've definitely ceased production while they look into
it. This is probably extremely good news for those of us who have a
Powerbook with this problem, and it might explain why I have still not
received my return voucher, over a week and a half after I rang them
up. I'll be checking up on this later, but I thought I should probably
share the news. If anyone has more information on the subject, please
feel free to add links in the comments.

New Powerbook is a bit spotty
11/11/2003 01:12 AM As we mentioned last week, a sizeable number of people have been
complaining to Apple about the new 15-inch aluminum Powerbooks they've
bought, saying that mysterious white spots that won't go away have
started appearing on their screens. On the off-chcance that you were
wondering what this looked like, here's a photo of one person's
defective Powerbook....
