Finnish WISPs Roam
Finnish WISPs Roam
11/11/2003 12:59 PMFrom the beautifully named city of Espoo, Finland, comes the news that
seven Finnish WISPs are roaming freely across their networks starting
in 2004: The networks include the cities of Hamina (operated by
Haminan Energia), Lahti (Suomen 4G), Mäntsälä
(Mäntsälän Sähkö), Porvoo (Porvoon Energia),
Rauma (Rauman Energia), Vaasa and the Leppävaara area in Espoo
(Netsafir) as well as Vantaa (Vantaan Energia). Radionet is providing
the roaming technology. Interestingly, TeliaSonera HomeRun, the
largest trans-Scandinavian WISP, isn't part of this deal. HomeRun has
extensive roaming agreements across Europe and elsewhere that require
fees for their users when outside of the HomeRun network, but retain
the single login, single bill convenience....
Where the Bins and the Benches Do Roam
Where the Bins and the Benches Do Roam
06/17/2005 07:12 PMIf you happen to go to Cambridge University you may see one of the new
roaming trash bins or park benches. The six bins and six
benches are solar-powered and are a £110K (~ $180K US) art project by
London artists, Greyworld. The trash bins (although they do not
accept trash) roam around an area of the campus and make rude noises,
chuckle, or sing if they feel like it's a nice day for it. The
benches also roam, but they do not sing. Each bin and bench has a
different personality. Some bins like to snuggle up to certain
benches while others do not. At certain times the bins may gather to
sing
a barbershop quartet song. The robots use GPS to help them navigate
but do
still get into a pickle now and then and have to be rescued. The
robots also
have an alarm to deter theives and screech if they are bothered. This
definately sounds like fun and whimsical
interactive robotic art!

Sprint PCS, AT&T Wireless Roam Airports
Sprint PCS, AT&T Wireless Roam Airports
04/19/2004 09:34 AMWith a handful of major and minor airports, the two cell carriers tiny
portfolio will have bilateral roaming: This tiny deal represents
airports as large as Denver and properties like Salt Lake City that
aren't up and running yet, and shows the incremental and tedious steps
taken to stitch together networks. The significant fact is that the
two networks, which currently mostly resell Wayport locations, are
willing to work directly together with bilateral roaming. It's part of
a strategy: neither company could possibly have more than a few
hundred monthly unlimited customers because it's cheaper to pay
Wayport or Boingo Wireless for unlimited access to the subset of
locations and then pay as you go on occasion in certain airports. AT&T
Wireless charges the absurd price of $70 per month. Sprint PCS,
however, is starting their build-out in a big way, and AT&T Wireless
resells Cometa locations (though it doesn't list them in its Wi-Fi
directory), which aren't yet part of Wayport's networks....

STSN and Sprint PCS Roam Lopsidedly; and
Whither Cell Companies' Wi-Fi Networks?
STSN and Sprint PCS Roam Lopsidedly; and
Whither Cell Companies' Wi-Fi Networks?
02/17/2004 05:02 PMSTSN and Sprint PCS will offer bilateral roaming on each other's Wi-Fi
networks. The hitch? Sprint PCS has two locations, neatly avoided in
this press release: I spoke to STSN last week about today's
announcement, and while they want to position it as bilateral roaming,
it's really a resale agreement from them to the carrier unless Sprint
PCS follows through on the plan they spoke to me and other press about
last July in which they had originally intended to build 1,300 of
their own locations. So far, Sprint PCS has built two Wi-Fi hotspots
that they own and operate. STSN has over 500 mostly hotel properties
in North American, and nearly 200 in Europe that aren't covered in
this agreement, with a worldwide total of 900 including a couple of
hundred properties yet to be built out. I asked Michael Jones, the
senior VP of sales at STSN, whether we would start seeing more of a
clearinghouse approach in which networks linked through an
intermediary fee settlement system instead of these one-at-a-time
peering arrangements. He said, "We are very selective at choosing who
we are peering with." Apparently, in testing, they're finding that
some hotspots don't offer the consistency they want and haven't
secured their systems in a way that STSN requires. Jones agrees that
industry standards for hotspot operation would make it easier to move
to a clearinghouse model. "There has to be some form of governance
over those service-level requirements," he said. Meanwhile, Sprint
PCS's failure to build out even a fraction of the locations that they
predicted eight months ago seems to be an industry trend. Even though
2004 was finally supposed to be the year of the hotspots, we haven't
heard boo from Cometa since they deployed 250 locations in Seattle
(their first of many cities, they said, to get that kind of coverage),
SBC (which predicted thousands of locations over a couple of years),
T-Mobile (Kinko's, Borders, and Starbucks seems to still be their
primary focus), or AT&T Wireless (a few airports and other deals,
but mostly reselling Cometa and Wayport). Sprint PCS customers can
roam to networks owned by Wayport, Airpath, Cometa, and Concourse. I
spoke to a Verizon Wireless manager by accident a few weeks ago, and
he said that the company doesn't plan to do more than resell service.

Get Your Own Sleep Room
Get Your Own Sleep Room
06/14/2004 03:33 AMSome people take sleep very seriously. Not getting enough sleep is
much more dangerous than most people realize, but it's become more
common in our society for people to be chronically sleep deprived.
The problem is apparently quite an issue in Japan, where Matsushita
has
developed a $30,000 sleep room system designed to help
ease you into and out of sleep. The system includes an automatically
adjusting bed, a TV showing soothing images, a sound system playing
relaxing sounds and (my personal favorite) a bed designed to massage
you gently into sleep. The system can be used for a cat nap or a full
night's sleep. Either way, it appears that folks in Japan are quite
excited about this sort of research - as an associated picture with
the article shows
Japanese office workers taking their naps in
the company's showroom that demonstrates a number of recliners.

Micros
copic fragments of plastic are a
"major pollutant", floating in the ocean,
settling on seabeds, and washing up onshore - with unknown
consequences for marine ecosystems, according to a new study.
"We've found this microscopic plastic material at all of the
sites we've examined," [lead researcher]
Dr
Richard C
Thompson [of University of Plymouth, UK]
said.
