BoingBoing reader Brian says,
Xeni's mention of brick cell phones reminded me of this interesting museum in Paderborn Germany, called the Heinz Nixdorf Museum. The museum is based on the history of computing; and contains all sorts of wonderful classic machines, crank/gear operated calculation engines, typewriters and early keyboards, data processing "stations", minicomputers, mobile phones, personal computers (incl an Apple LISA, remember that!?), etc etc! It's a fascinating visit in person, and the museum website has some glimpses of the exhibits as well as some interesting text on the history of technology and computing.

What are the real job numbers?

What are the real job numbers? 02/10/2004 12:08 PM
Yesterday, I posted a note from Stephen Roach, the Wall Street Economist from Morgan Stanley (he gets paid millions for being right, not for being political).  He states that we are 8 m jobs behind where we should be right now with an average recovery (which started in late 2001). How can that number be true?  The easiest way to see what is really going on is to look at the absolute numbers of jobs or economy has created rather than fudgy stats about who is looking for work.

Brad DeLong has an excellent graph that shows in absolute terms how many jobs our economy supported over the last four years.  Note that the peak was at the end of 2001.  Since then, we have lost 2.2 m jobs.  In that same time period, the number of new entrants to the job market has grown, due to normal population growth, at nearly 200,000 per month (or 7.2 m workers over the last three years).  Combined, that's a net deficit of 9.4 m jobs to stay even with our employment rate at the end of 2001.

So, given these numbers, 8 m new jobs to isn't a typo.  So, why the difference between these numbers (generated by an establishment survey that covers 1/3 of all workers) and the unemployment numbers?  Unemployment statistics are generated through a household survey that asks people about their job status and whether they are looking for work.  The household survey only asks this question of 0.006% of all US households.  This sounds about as useful as presidential poll.

FWIW, our economy has even lost jobs since the start of the recovery.  This isn't a usual pattern.  Something more is at work.  Global job arbitrage,& nbsp;enabled in large part by the Internet, may be the culprit.

Real Pocket Sized Computers That You
Still Can't Buy

Real Pocket Sized Computers That You
Still Can't Buy
02/12/2004 02:44 AM
For years, we've been hearing about companies working on truly small handheld computers. These are full powered machines running real desktop operating systems on devices just a bit larger than a standard PDA. The Guardian has written up an article c omparing the three major players in the space - and all I can say is, that I'll believe it when I can buy one. OQO has received the most hype, with the least to show until just recently. They've definitely modified their design from the original plans (and doubled their expected price...) so that their device is more like a giant Danger Hiptop with a pop out keyboard tucked under the screen. The folks at Tiqit are great, and once took the time to show me around their offices and let me test out their devices (which worked great). Their device is more like a giant Handspring Treo, with a small screen and a keyboard on the front of the device below the screen. Finally, Antelope is a spin-off from IBM who came up with this sort of concept in the first place, and are forging ahead with the original concept that OQO pitched and abandoned (and Tiqit toyed with, and abandoned) of created a "core" with a variety of different shells. This is still the idea that appeals to me the most. If you need your computer to be a desktop, you pop the core into your desktop docking station. Need it to be a laptop, you pop it into your laptop shell. If you need it to control your car, you pop it into the car docking station. To be honest, they all sound wonderful - but none of them are on the market yet. The article says they're all planning to release versions on the market soon, which would be great if they haven't been saying that for years. No doubt that these are all very cool. I definitely wouldn't mind having one around. However, until there's a way to actually buy one, you have to be a bit skeptical of their ability to come to market.

Proving, once again, that the biggest threat to your computer security is someone walking out the door with your hardware, some folks were surprised to have their l aptops stolen at the Asia Securitex show in Hong Kong. The police even admit that the thieves probably saw the show as "easy pickings," which says something about how they view some of the vendors at the show.

I spent the last 3 days at the 2004 Computers, Freedom and Privacy Conference in Berkeley, and enjoyed it a lot. One of the highlights of the conference was getting to see in person so many people I admire, like Phil Zimmerman and John Gilmore, but whom I only know through reading about them. I also got to meet many of the people behind the group emails that I get as a member/subscriber of various organizations, such as the CDT, EPIC, EFF, and the ACLU, alerting me to issues and asking me for money or to take action. I took a fair number of photos at the conference and posted them tonight at 2004 Computers, Freedom and Privacy Conference. Hopefully over the weekend I'll get a chance to write up my impressions of the conference....

Emerging Tech's self-organizing
conference-within-a-conference

Emerging Tech's self-organizing
conference-within-a-conference
12/20/2003 09:44 PM
At this year's O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference, there are 27 night sessions reserved from allocation by the organizers, left open to be a "self organizing conference-within-a-conference." The idea is that ETCON attendees propose sessions on the open wiki, and vote on which they'd prefer to attend.
We're not looking for polished presentations. We'd prefer "white board" sessions on your works-in-progess, rough demonstrations with promise, concept and code (with an emphasis on running code, even if it doesn't yet fully represent the concept). You should be prepared to take input, answer questions, engage in discussion, and be open to altering your conceptions and mucking about in your source. Oh, and have a good deal of fun while you're at it.

Hogzilla is real. And now, he's real
dead.
03/22/2005 05:00 PM
Xeni Jardin: A team of National Geographic experts with nothing better to do confirmed the existence of Georgia's monster hog, "Hogzilla."
They also noted the super swine didn't quite live up to the 1,000-pound, 12-foot hype generated when Hogzilla was caught on a farm last summer and photographed hanging from a backhoe. Donning biohazard suits to exhume the behemoth's smelly remains, the experts estimated Hogzilla was probably only 7 1/2 to 8 feet long, and weighed about 800 pounds. The confirmation came in a documentary aired Sunday night on the National Geographic Channel; it will be rebroadcast Wednesday and Saturday.
