Read any good terrorist books lately?
09/21/2004 01:05 PMAmong many other unfortunate provisions in the Patriot Act, passed in
haste and hysteria in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, there's one
that's especially loathsome to American values: It gives the
government an unprecedented and scary carte blanche to paw through
library and bookstore records to see what you've been reading. If you
believe that such records might actually help the government nail the
next wave of al-Qaida terrorists, then you don't have to do anything.
But if you believe, as I do, that this particular power is useless for
that goal -- but might prove handy for John Ashcroft and successors
should they decide that, for example, citizens who read too many books
about subject X might warrant close surveillance -- then you should
go here and sign the petition
by the
Campaign for Reader
Privacy, a coalition of booksellers, librarians and writers, to
push Congress to change this un-American law.
This particular part of the Patriot Act is one of those stealth
provisions that simply invites government abuse. Consider:
"The FBI may request the records secretly; it is not required to prove
that there is 'probable cause' to believe the person whose records are
being sought has committed a crime; and the bookseller or librarian
who receives an order is prohibited from revealing it to anyone except
those whose help is needed to produce the records."
This isn't the sort of power we should trust in any government's
hands; given the current administration's record, it's even scarier.

?layout=article&articleid=CA336073The books of 2003
reflected a return to relative normality after the emotional and
financial fallout of 9/11, which meant a publishing year characterized
by both the predictable and the unexpected. If one name emerged from
the Fiction pack, it was Dan Brown; if one theme dominated Nonfiction,
it was the Iraq War and its aftermath.
The editors
responsible for the following discussions and Best Books lists are:

George W. Bush, timber company
part-owner and therefore small
businessman
12/17/2004 06:40 PMFrom the non-partisan www.FactCheck.ORG. Emphasis mine. A Bush-Cheney
'04 ad claims Kerry would raise taxes on 900,000 small businesses and
"hurt jobs." But it counts every high-salaried person who
has even $1 of outside business income as a "small business
owner" -- a definition so broad that even Bush and Cheney have
qualified while in office. In fact, hundreds of thousands of those
"small businesses" have no jobs to offer. Furthermore, by
the Bush definition 32 million "small businesses" would see
no tax increase. The ad doesn't mention that, of course. Nor does it
mention Kerry's proposals for some tax cuts specifically targeted for
small businesses..... President Bush himself would have qualified as a
"small business owner" under the Republican definition,
based on his 2001 federal income tax returns. He reported $84 of
business income from his part ownership of a timber-growing
enterprise. However, 99.99% of Bush's total income came from other
sources that year. (Bush also qualified as a "small business
owner" in 2000 based on $314 of "business income," but
not in 2002 and 2003 when he reported his timber income as
"royalties" on a different tax schedule.)...

12/19/2004 03:36 PMSo the big<
/a> news
a> is about Google
and libraries. I don't feel the need to comment on this
right now, as you can find plenty of other places for that. However,
here are a few angles I haven't seen discussed elsewhere in the
library blogosphere.
- Librari
es and the Internet
"More broadly, the Internet can profoundly improve the relationship
between libraries and society. For example, there are two major
libraries in my town -- a college library, and a public library. My
library card works in both places. I used to favor the college
library, because there was open WiFi access there -- which meant,
among other things, that I could use LibraryLookup from my laptop to
find books in the stacks. Recently, though, the college shut down its
open access point. And from an IT administrator's point of view, I can
understand why. Not long after, the public library installed an open
access point. So now it's my favorite spot, and lately I notice other
mobile professionals congregating there too." [Jon Udell's
Weblog
(Click over to read Jon's story about getting locked in
the library, too!)
- "A quick calculation using the figures above suggests an average
scan rate of 3200 volumes per day (assuming 365 days/year for 6 years)
at the University of Michigan site alone." [Tito Sierra on the WEB4
LIB mailing list]
- "An even quicker calculation shows that they will need to
digitize 2.25 books _a_minute_, 24 hours/day, 365 days/year to
digitize 7 million volumes in six years." [Roy Tennant on the WEB4
LIB mailing list]
It's times like this when I wish
